2020 Shipping Movements

Further to my post yesterday (#4284) on future Tesla ships I've narrowed my focus.
One ship is standing out to me as possibly our next ship to Europe (after GRAND DAHLIA and GLOVIS CAPTAIN) and that is the GLOVIS SPLENDOR. She's bigger than average too. I have her pencilled in for early August
Did you give estimated departure dates for the DAHLIA and CAPTAIN yet Mr Miserable?

...and so Quarter 3 has begun with the first ship en route.

Ode to Mr M...

For people who ordered in hope,
You’re waiting but how will you cope?
When those Teslas have shipped,
with anxiety you’re gripped
…for weeks you will fret and will mope.

Roll-on that day you all say
The time that the cars sail away.
You can’t take the strain
Of waiting in vain
For Tesla a date to convey

All look at the pics from the sky
Pier 80 as they’re driving by
“That Blue one’s like mine
It looks so divine!”
You shout with a tear in your eye

So here on these pages you try,
to find on those ships sailing nigh.
Some news on your car,
It travels so far
“I WANT MY VIN”… you all cry

But help is on hand while you wait,
As it moves through the Panama straight.
With Atlantic to cross…
Mr M is the boss.
Always on hand to update.

You’re all now so ‘Glovis’ obsessed
But knowledge, we’re none of us blessed
’Til Mr M helps,
quell those whimpering yelps
He answers your every behest

This poem and words may seem risible
But thank you for help Mr Miserable.
The wait seems much faster
With you ‘Quarter-Master’
For shipping & all things deliverable!

No I haven't but let's have a stab now....

GRAND DAHLIA Dep Pier 80 25 Jul Arr Zeebrugge 15 Aug
GLOVIS CAPTAIN Dep Pier 80 31 Jul Arr Zeebrugge 21 Aug.
GLOVIS SPLENDOR Dep Pier 80 6 Aug Arr Zeebrugge 27 Aug

Clearly this all comes with a big health warning!....

Because the wait for the X is killing me, I've had turned my hand to a bit of online marine vessel sleuthing (so this will probably be wrong).
Unless Vedaprime knows that there hasn't been any containers arrive at the BNSF Pearland terminal yet.... The Safmarine Mafadi left Houston on the 12th enroute to Norfolk / Antwerp / Rotterdam. Also the Maersk Montana will be arriving tomorrow (16th) in Houston then following the same route. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I will know exactly which ones about 10-14 days after they leave port, and then it will be possible to know the exact car journey timings from Fremont for an individual car

I don't remember who exactly, but I think it was the guy at our local Tesla store, told me that the first shipments to the EU go to the countries that are the farthest away from the ports. That would mean that although the first ship docks in Belgium, the cars on that ship will mostly be destined for countries like Poland, Austria, Croatia...

Anybody have an idea about that?

I have to say this forum is the only one that gives me hope. I ordered a shiny red Model 3 Performance in the 3rd week of March (17 weeks ago) and I'm still waiting. Why couldn't they just make cars to order? This is cruel and unusual punishment. Anyway, thank you all for keeping my spirits up. Fingers crossed for a UK delivery soon!!

I'm exactly the same. I like knowing whats going on. Even if I had to wait 4 months for one of my previous cars I knew exactly when it was being built and when it is being delivered. Honestly, If I had known the process for assigning cars was this random and unreliable I would have gone with a different vehicle. It's just needlessly frustrating.

I guess, because you have gone for pretty much the top spec M3 with the fancy paint, they'll be making very few of them for our market. Plus side is, you'll probably be near the top of the list.

I'm sure one touch of the accelerator and all will be forgiven :)

You may find this hard to believe but there is some sense behind that strategy however if you are in the UK it shouldn't worry you. They can't sell RHD cars in those places.

Ahhh shiny red...
That's a shame.
Could be a long wait....

Hi, I'm new to this group and am loving this thread. Ordered my Model X February 3rd 2020 and have not heard a word from Tesla so I am hoping it is on one of these ships. Mr M, you seem to have great knowledge of these shipping movements. I will keep an eye on the Glovis Sun!

Welcome but I'm going to disappoint you sadly.

If you are waiting for MODEL S or Model X

Although Model S and Model X are made in the same factory as the Model 3 their delivery journey to you is markedly different.

Both Model S and X are shipped partly assembled in containers (3 to a container).

They are moved by road from the factory to the Oakland Joint Intermodal Terminal where they are loaded on to a train.

The train then takes about 9 days to travel to Houston. (actually BNSF Pearland). They are then moved by road to the dock at Barbers Cut where they are then loaded on to a scheduled container ship that eventually arrives 15 days later in Rotterdam. There the containers are moved by road (or barge) to Tilburg in Holland. Your car is removed from the container and then joins a mini production line where it is reassembled. It is then moved to Zeebrugge and shipped to Southampton.

As can be seen, all this takes time.

Finding your car in this complex logistics chain is difficult but there is a man who can. @Vedaprime is the specialist in this area. You can find him here but he normally resides on Twitter.

Hope that helps...

The GLOVIS SUN continues to make her way to the Panama Canal albeit at a somewhat leisurely pace of 14.3 kts.
She is currently about 80nm off the Mexican coast about 120 nm NW of Cabo San Lucas.
She has been at sea for 3 days now and over that period she has averaged 14.1 kts which is about 2.4 kts slower than I would normally expect. It doesn't sound much but over the 3300 nm distance to the canal that makes a difference of about 34 hrs to your ETA.

I can only assume she is timing her arrival to coincide with a canal transit booking in which case I am inclined to add a day to her ETA in Zeebrugge. We shall see...

What is looking good is the weather. There is zero severe weather in the tropics at the moment, which is highly unusual. This is being put down to sand from the Sahara blowing across the Caribbean and effectively putting a dampener on any storm development. The BBC have an interesting article here on the 2020 hurricane season.

As mentioned earlier, the GRAND DOLPHIN will depart Pier 80 tomorrow and I will post an update later this evening once the destination has been published. I still don't think she is heading our way though.

The next ship to load will be the GRAND DAHLIA which will be coming to Europe. She is currently scheduled to arrive at Pier 80 on Tue 21 Jul. I may have an update on her too later this evening.
