Don't test drive a Tesla . . . unless you want to buy one

I have to agree with all of you. I'm a day one model 3 reservation holder and that was the car I was going to trade my 10 year old Saturn Vue suv in for. Yet after the delivery event I as that the dual motor option that I want/need (I live in Chicago we have snow....) was going to be another year away. I decided to go and ask the tesla folk, as the Westmont location is only a mile from my house, if I really really needed the DM version. Needless to say I test drove a S75D on a Friday,my wife drove it the next Monday while I sat with the great sales folk and realized i could actually afford my dream car, and now im waiting for my S75D to arrive. so yes DONT DRIVE A TESLA lol

Yeah, that's how it goes down! The 75D is a sweet ride with a super fast engine. Enjoy it!

Did 4 total Model S (P100D, 75, and 2x 90D [one of which was for multiple days]) and 1 Model X test drives before deciding that I liked the S, but not enough to buy… but only because of the Model 3 and only because I have a day 1 reservation. Couldn't find a way to convince myself it was an acceptable value for the dollar with that on the horizon, especially when I looked over my "likes and dislikes" notes.

Still a Model S fan in general, though!

I have a Model S 75D on order. White exterior with 19" Grey Slipstream wheels, Cream Interior. Already bought black Lloyd mats to replace the cream color mats that come with the car. Should have it the first or second week of October. Still searching the web everyday for new YouTube video's.

I'd be interested in a set of crème colored mats for my 2012 Sig. to replace the black ones. I think it would be a nice touch in a signature red car with the white "crème" interior. Hmmmmm?? Going to see if I can perhaps get my hands on a set and see how they hatch up with the White?? Signature interior offered in 2012

It appears to just be a matter of time! Find the $50K. It'll be worth it if you can make it work.

Agreed 100% had to do a little rearranging but now I have a Model S in my garage (2012 Signature 85) don't regret it one bit this thing is absolutely fantastic!! if you can get it "by any means necessary" get the car you won't be disappointed.

i officially have two more days until i have to decide myself. i did the same and test drove the ms. bad mistake. loved it. day 1 model 3 reservation as well. i've been contemplating for weeks now. i was set on the options i want for both the ms rwd and model 3. It's about a 30k difference to me. but if i really take into account the configuration i want in the model 3 (mainly performance) in which it won't come out until next yr perhaps end of the year and miss out on fed tax credit. it's more like a 5-10k difference (assuming performance version is another 10-15k). That's a no brainer to me. But now it's just a matter of how much that performance means to me . i can pay the model 3 outright but model s i need some loans (as i don't like touching my current savings/investments). i really like not having a car payments. but everytime i see a ms, i kept rethinking. I'm still 50/50. Everyday is different for me. My wife hates my indecisiveness.

Right?!

MB/Smart dealership : Test drive of a new Smart Electric Drive, lots of mashing the accelerator and guy smiles

<months later>

Scene : Fade to driveway : Guy walks out, but his Smart ED is nowhere to be seen, looks sadly over and sees a gas sucking Mercedes SUV sitting in the driveway.

Camera pans to EV owner : Anger and disappointment on face.

Thought bubble with picture of a Tesla Model S: my electric car better be in the driveway tomorrow, or the SUV is toast!

Next day: again, that SUV is the driveway instead of my EV

That night : Fade to black, 11 PM : Button clicks on laptop as a Tesla Model S is purchased

Scene : Wife asleep, husband leans over : "Honey, I bought a Tesla" <evil grin>

</>

That's how it went for me.

I was so confident in my purchase that I actually placed a reservation for Model S first, then cancelled my reservation for Model 3, and then test drove the Model S later that week... not because of any second thoughts (since my mind was already made up by that point) but just to get familiar with my future car ;). On the day of the pickup, the delivery specialist asked me how long it had been since I test drove the car. I told him the week before and he had a puzzled look. So yeah, after seeing people ride in someone else's Tesla either as a driver or even as a passenger, I think there'll be more folks coming in to showrooms to do test drives in spite of already purchasing the car just for the joyrides and to help time pass while agonizingly waiting for their delivery :).

Very true. Also test drives are a good way to get familiar with nuances and fun features of Teslas. I took three test drives, and learned something new every time.

Hard call. Both will be sweet cars. If the price difference is really only 5K - 10K, the S is such a sweet car, and has been around for 5 years so has worked out some issues that new cars have. I'm sure the 3 will be awesome, but the reality is that like any new car it'll take a year or so likely before some bugs are worked out. I haven't had car payments for awhile, but now have a good sized one for my S. No regrets. So much fun. Good luck!

I had no plans what so ever to get a new car. I was happy driving my 2010 candy apple red 4 door cadillac boat. My husband (who drives an Audi diesel) really didn't like my boat as it didn't have enough leg room and the seats weren't comfy. So, on a whim we went to find the Tesla dealership. It was kind of a last ditch effort to get me into another car and I really didn't like most of the other ICE cars that are so commonly seen on the road. We were driving around Denver trying to find the dealership, Google said it was located in a mall. A MALL??? No way, must be wrong, so we found the service center - lol. We spent an hour just chatting with the people there and finally asked where the heck was the dealership.........in the mall. Seriously?!? So, we went back to the mall (still in disbelief) and found the cubby hole they were squeezed into and since it was a Saturday there were a million people ooing and aweing the 3 cars they had parked in there. We finally snagged someone to talk with and found out that we could not test drive anything that day and we would need an appointment. Really! Well, we live over an hour away, so how did they propose we test drive a car? Oh, we will bring one to you - they said. Huh? Oooookay. A couple of days later this 20 something kid shows up with this monster looking all black, super shiny S......SP100D! I was terrified to drive it, why would they bring out their most expensive Model S for me to drive? The poor kid was shocked at my response and wanted to know if I was excited to drive it and when I told him that I was, he said most people acted happier than I was acting. Did I say I was terrified? I was terrified! Big breath and I get in the car, had to take my shoes off so I wouldn't over react to that accelerator peddle and put us into next week accidentally. I drive off very slowly and responsibly, observing all the speed limits, stopping completely and giving everybody else the right away. My dear husband sat in the back and never said a word and the kid kept trying to sell the features. He wanted me to experience the handling and it was very clear that I was not going to do that on my own so he wanted us to head up into the mountains. OMG! I crept up the road and finally had to give it up and make (yes make) my husband drive. He kept telling me that it was my car and I needed to get comfortable with it but he relented and we switched places. I was so relieved to get in the back seat. So he drove further up the mountain and took the curves with more fun than I did but the kid still wanted us to experience more. So.........he changed places with hubby to drive us back down this mountain road. Well! The very first curve he took, my purse went flying across the floor and of course I couldn't reach it because my seat belt had me plastered to the seat (as it should) but the next curve it came flying back so I was able to grab it and wrap it around my arm. I kept checking that my belt was tight as our driver would shout out "70" when we reached that breakneck speed. My next thought was that I really needed to relax because if we go off the side of the road I might not get hurt as badly. We made it down and out of the mountains and then he wanted to show us the Ludicrous mode. What the heck, we've come this far and we are headed towards home. Both my husband and I felt the extra skin on our face and neck lag behind us as the car crouched and then sprang a half a block ahead. We were home in a flash. I can't tell you if I was breathing or not but after that ride, I was never the same. ALL my thoughts were based on "how am I going to get my hands on one of THOSE". I traded in my boat on a 90D that they "had" to move and now I do most of the driving. Speed limit signs are just a suggestion and my husband is forever asking me to "warn him before I do that". I'm getting the windows tinted and adding some bling in a couple of weeks. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my Tesla!

Add me to the list. Model 3 reservation holder. Began to get concerned about the size had a discussion with my awesome wife about the S. Here response was "oh good I think the 3 is ugly". Drove the S last Saturday, pick up a 90D on Saturday. Renting a car and driving 2 hours to pick it up in PA to save 2k on shipping. Can't wait for the drive home!!!!

Hello All,. My name is Larry. I had my first Tesla experience August 2016. Since then thinking of Tesla's has ruined my life. Consumed with Tesla forums, researching used Tesla's, speculating on future Tesla improvements, daily visits to the Tesla.com design studio devolved to twice daily and sometimes hourly visits. Finally after 10 months I figured the car would be cheaper than the necessary therapy bills.

Now things are worse! Like casino's gambler help lines I think Tesla has a moral obligation to test ride driver's, no I mean test ride victims like myself, who's entire lives are focused on our next high, excuse me drive.

Thank you for your compassion.

Hi,

Thank you for this warning story.

I am about to go a test drive a Tesla tomorrow and I am a little apprehensive after reading this ... I mean, who is there to say that once I am at the wheel I won't just run away with the car?

What if thet won't be able to pry me away from the wheel?
