if the car will be finalized in 3-6 weeks (where are you seeing transcripts of the call...?), then the prototypes we saw barely 5 weeks ago weren't Alphas....they were likely Bravo prototypes.

I haven't seen them - I was just quoting from upthread from someone who (I assume) listened to the call.

This does make the comments from the engineers during the reveal test rides that the interior design shown was mostly complete more interesting.

I think you're misunderstanding (or perhaps I am...).

On the CC, the assertion was made that they were intending to build 500,000 vehicles (Roadster <heh> + S + X + 3) in 2018. That doesn't mean they won't build any S, X, or 3 vehicles in 2017.

I need some help. The shareholder letter said, "500,000 total unit build plan (combined for Model S, Model X, and Model 3) to 2018", which sounds like a cumulative number of cars built, not a 500k/yr rate of production. Most of the stories online say 500k/yr, as above, but I read the the quote differently.

Here's an article that interprets it the same as me: Tesla wants to build 500,000 cars two years sooner than planned. "500,000-cars-made milestone" is a total not a rate.

These are VERY different kinds of numbers!

The previous annual production target for 2020 was 500,000/year, so if they are moving it up 2 years, that's 500,000 in 2018.

The way it is worded and your following interpretation seems logical. It was apparently just obvious to those of us who have covered this stuff day in & day out for years what it actually meant.

There is absolutely no way Tesla is going to be able to deliver ANYTHING in Q4 2017.

actually, i think they go NUTS in December 2017.

if the deadline with the suppliers is July 1, 2017 for parts, that gives them time to trickle out the West Coast Beta testers in Q4....


and then they unleash in Q4/Q1 2018.

Well if you want to get technical... 2018 is only 20 months away. And I totally know what I want for Christmas for 2017.

Early 2018 is only about a year and a half away. You might get a Design Studio link well before that.

I certainly hope we will still get v2 autopilot hardware in the Model 3. I also worry about them rushing this. Personally, I would rather they take their time and get everything right the first production run than have to deal with issues later.

I know we're getting the hardware. I was expecting (hoping) that the Model 3 would have a next-gen version of the autopilot hardware though as opposed to what is in the S & X now.
