Missing Tow Package?

Jeez... maybe, again, Fremont was out of *this* part (the cover). Lol.... And, yeah, I see that in the manual, which isn't exactly 'current', it's from January (the PDF version).

The covers I’ve seen in person with tow packages look like the first photos at these sites:

Installing the Hidden Trailer Hitch - 2016 Tesla Model X Long-Term Road Test

Note, however, that my own experience has been on older Model Xs (90Ds), not current production, and the plastic trim around it is different too, so maybe there is a new cover.

From what I've seen after testing different vehicles, if you have the two plastic rivets, you don't have the tow package -- the ones I've seen with tow package installed have a new plate on the bottom with a single screw in back center that is used to mount/unmount it. However maybe yours is the exception so let us know.

mine didn't come with the tow package (even though it was supposed to) and has the two plastic rivets.

Thanks for the update! As usual, anyone that depends on the manual will be often confused!

I recently reached out to Tesla with a request for a printed (bound) manual since one was not supplied with our new MX (one came with our MS). I’ve seen such MX manuals in loaners, so I know they exist through software version 8, and even said in my request that I know I can download a PDF and print it, and know that a bound version is going to be slightly out of date, etc., but wanted a bound one for ease of use and for loaning to other friends interested in Tesla (plus it fits nicely in the glove box). As an extreme example my 4-year-old loves reading books but won’t bother with a stapled stack of papers. She’s happy to read my version 4 MS manual and ask me about the figures and longest words. All I got back after a long delay from Tesla was a message that all printed manuals are out of date and I should download and print the latest one and that they won’t send me an existing bound copy.

because of this thread, i emailed my OA because I am scheduled to pick up my car this Friday.

He said that my car was built / born in Sept 2017 and that this car (Model X 100D) does not include the tow package but I can get it retrofitted if I want. I asked for a price and haven't heard back yet.

You shouldn't have to pay for it. Have it added to the "due bill" when you take delivery. It was supposed to be standard by that point. Mine was born in early Sept and i took delivery at the end of Sept and it didn't come with it. It was added to the due bill and will get installed at no cost when it comes in.

Hi, any way to check if a tow package was included as standard on an inventory July 2017 build. My thought it was standard, but I am told inventory car came as is without one and have to pay to get one, plus it's back ordered. Was a painful experience at delivery.

My MX was missing the tow package also, and they put it on the due bill. They said service center will contact me when they have the parts but so far nothing, almost 1 month now. I have not actually see the "due bill" myself. So I wonder if they just said they will put it on the due bill and forgot about it.

1. People use hitches for things other than towing - Bike racks come to mind at the outset. Skis, boards, etc etc etc.

2. If you dont have the plug installed for the trailer wiring - then you don't have the tow package installed at all. The Due bill needs to include the installation of not just the hitch but the wiring as well.

3. I think that the tow package being standard and not installed is a significant issue - how many people took delivery and have no idea they are supposed to have a hitch?

Can you see someone returning a lease in 3 years, and getting billed for not having the hitch?

You need to ask your OA to specifically check the configuration. Generally inventory cars are sold “as built” regardless of what was or wasn’t standard equipment at the time. If there’s something you need to have (tow hitch, sub-zero package, etc.) you should not depend on it being standard equipment or included in whatever package you think you’re getting, you should confirm it specifically that the vehicle you’re buying has it.

I was in a similar situation, assumed that my vehicle would have it due to the build date and it didn’t. Because I hadn’t specifically asked about it before taking delivery, Tesla initially tried to say I wasn’t entitled to it. After escalating to the sales manager, he agreed to add it at no charge. Apparently my car was produced between the time they made the announcement and the time it went into effect on the line.

Anybody have any luck getting their tow package installed? I got an inventory X that was built in Sep 2017 which was missing the tow package. Made a few calls to the Service Center and have been told that it's still on backorder with no end in sight.

Same here, built in Sept 2017 without the tow package and I still haven't gotten it yet.

Mine was built after yours, and still no call from any Service Center. It was supposed to be on my due bill. At least I don't really need it, just would like to have it in case I need to install a bike rack or something.

I helped my referral take delivery around Nov timeframe. And he too was missing his tow package... I flagged it and called in the DS to add it on the Due Bill. At first the comment was add towing for $1200ish. But we quickly got the DS to admit the error and mistake. I found a couple other items too, and made sure they were on the due bill.

If you are in Oregon and taking delivery of an X & need an experienced owner to walk through an inspection sheet while you take delivery, send me a message. In this case, it saved quite a bit of grief resolving issues after delivery.

At the end of the day, we had another happy owner.

How helpful are the Delivery Specialists during first inspection? Are they typically just rushing to get you through the process? Also, how flexible are they if I find things a few days after delivery once I’ve had a chance to drive around for a bit?
