SAN DIEGO DELIVERY

My New Equation: 2 years + 2 days = M3
2 years + 2 days = 732 days = 17,568 hours until delivery of our Tesla Model 3!

Yes delivery really happened; Monday, 4/2 my wife and I took delivery at the new San Diego Delivery Center. The experience was positively excellent. Kudos for this positive experience start with Elle, our ISA. Starting with her first contact last week she kept me continually appraised of progress and next steps via e-mails and phone calls. She even went the extra mile to coordinate with Kia Finance to obtain their release of our personalized plates we had on our leased Kia Soul EV+ that we turned in last week. John greeted us warmly at the door and he was the person to take care of document signing. He had everything ready for us to sign; all paperwork in place including the CA DMV transfer of our existing personalized plates to the M3. Without Elle's help; we probably would of needed to first receive standard issue plates in about 45 days and then deal with the DMV to transfer the personalized plates to the M3. John then introduced us to Jose who spent a good amount of time while we took pictures; carefully examined the vehicle using the checklist found on the forum; paired our iPhones to the vehicle and the keycards; and provided an excellent overview and demonstration of touchscreen functions, vehicle operation, etc. He was quite knowledgeable, proficient, answered all of our questions, and was a pleasure to work with. During our inspection we did notice the driver side door didn't quite align flush with the side panel; also there was a small gap in the seal at the bottom of the windshield on the passenger side. He immediately had someone look at it; advised they agreed it needed correction and said it could be done there. He apologized that it may take a half-hour to correct. Within half an hour the door was perfectly aligned; the windshield seal addressed (though it probably never would of been a problem as is); and also had our personalized plates installed providing a Tesla M3 frame on both the front and rear. It's been a long 2 years and 2 days since standing in line at Fashion Valley mall in San Diego; but after driving the car for only about 35 miles - it was worth it. The car looks great and is delightful to drive. Many thanks to many contributors on this forum who provided valuable insight; checklists; and shared the experience of the wait.

Maybe not. I configured on 3/22 and just got my VIN today. 129XX

getting me all excited with these kind of posts just to be disappointed a moment later upon checking tesla.com

but you're on the west coast..

Wow - I just configured on 3/24 so I guess I have quite a wait for a VIN (was inline at the Natic store for my reservation)
you may be in luck now that production has been ramping. Feb was a very slow production month. I'm willing to bet your time to VIN will be shorter than mine

Black/Aero/EAP
Configured 03/13
Still no VIN

Is the delay because of location (Chicago) or Black/Aero combination?

Sorry to say but why do you expect a car already. There are many people who configured earlier with no VIN. I got mine today and I configured 3/1. There are people who configured in February (same config.) with no VIN. I think it has to do with the delivery center AND which ISA you get.

Now that we had a little time to digest the Q1'18 delivery/production report, I am re-evaluating how well the spreadsheet did in its projections. These are the projections of the various models before the report:

8,480 units based on the Buyer VINs Chart on the Invites Spreadsheet
9,126 units based on Bloomberg's Tesla Model 3 Tracker
9,609 units based on the NHTSA VINs Chart on the Invites Spreadsheet

Tesla reported Q1 production is 9766.

So,
The spreadsheet buyer VIN gets a grade of 86.8% correct.
Bloomberg gets a grade of 93.4% correct.
And the spreadsheet NHTSA VIN gets a grade of 98.4% correct.

The buyer VIN model as it is written gives too much value to historical numbers, so it is skewed by February bottle neck and is unable to cope with the burst rate of late March. The NHTSA VIN model is more forward looking and is more representative of Tesla intent on future production. We are working on a revision to shorten the time affecting the buyer VIN model to capture a more instantaneous picture of Tesla current production rate.
For now, I know which one I'm using next quarter, and yes, the VIN registration today matters a lot.

Last week, Tesla also threw us a curve ball with their batch of invites to Canada. The problem we have now is we don't have a good feel of the Canadian sample rate on our spreadsheet. I am not quite sure how a 100 reported invites in Canada compares to 100 in the US. There are, however, some information we can glean from the invited group. First, a large chunk of the Canadian reservations including most if not all of the Canadian owners have been invited in the last batch. Second, the deferral rate is much higher in Canada than it is in the US, probably because of the importance they place on AWD.

At first I thought the Canadian invites was Tesla's attempt at pushing 200K to Q3, but there is just not enough number in Canada to make that happen given the current projected production rate. So, unless Tesla starts with European delivery or they slow down production to retool for AWD, 200K will probably happen in Q2.

CJ - I just gotta say thanks and congrats on the spreadsheet! It is awesome data and I love seeing what I can glean from it every day.
