Previously they simply changed the site without any prior notice whatsoever, with the new version of the car.

If you ordered just before that, but within the allowed-to-change period, you could change to the updated car. If you were outside of the period already, or if your car was already being or already built, you could always refuse delivery and reorder.

This time is a bit different, since the site hasn't changed... but 4 months till delivery is kind of crazy... Even if they are trying to delay hitting 200k, they only need to delay to April (assuming they want to hit in Q2) since April vs. June don't make a difference.

I placed an order for a S100D just prior to the date change. My OA told me that the June delay was so that Tesla could produce right-sided drive vehicles
I am still awaiting final determination from my insurance company that our S75D is totaled, so I couldn't order yet. I did however chat with the online specialist, and was told a whole lot of new inventory cars are coming TODAY! Well, it's 1:15am the next day and I see no inventory cars at all, so either they just tell you what you want to hear, or they all work on Elon time and "today" means some time before the summer. I am starting to really not believe anything Tesla says.

This actually makes perfect sense. Tesla have expanded to new markets and the demand for the existing Model S/X have probably lowered a bit in matured markets like US and some parts of Europe. To keep up on sales figures Tesla will steer production to markets where demand for the existing (not re-designed) Model S/X still will be in high demand. Elon was very clear about that no new battery chemistry for S/X this year nor increase in production. So 2018 will mean in total about a little above 100k S/X delivered globally. Next year is the year for a refresh.

To prove this point further. Australia and New Zeeland for example are RHD-markets and if you go into the Australia Tesla site it says "MAY DELIVERY". And Australia is for sure a market with high demand for X/S and a market that Tesla got to a bit later. And it also take some time to ship the cars to Australia for a May delivery so they need to be built right now and the coming month. Alson Hong Kong is RHD.

So, all in all, it's just about relocation of where cars are to be sold that steer the delivery time. Right now North America got down prioritized for some months and probably most likely due to decreased demand and also that North America is the only region where you can get a Model 3 delivery for the rest of 2018! Many people in North America are waiting for the refresh X/S and some also move into Model 3 instead. So no need to shorten the delivery time in US for X/S and prioritize other markets where demand is higher and where it is not possible to get into a Model 3. In North America there are probably a lot of inventory cars that is already built that will soon show up in new inventory. Those cars will cover for large part of the US demand the coming months for those who can't wait for a customized delivery in June.

They shut down factory at end of each quarter for employee vacations (aka retooling).

My guess is refresh comes March 31. Announced April 15ish with first deliveries in June.

What the refresh is, or am I right... who knows? Just my guess

I doubt this anything more than almost end of quarter and they probably filled their quota for the model s for the quarter.

This is almost the middle of the quarter. The quarter ends Mar 31 and if it had anything to do with quarterly production, deliveeries would be delayed until April, not June.

Tesla's RHD market has expanded so they are probably producing more of them in total. Additionally concentrating on international production for the next few months pushes the tax incentive 200K mark out further. If I was planning at Tesla I would be aiming to hit the 200K American deliveries as early as possible in a quarter and as close as possible to a big increase in Model 3 production so they ca get as many people as possible into the incentive taper.

So that would be hit 200K on April 1st, not June. Elon did say they will hit 5K Model 3's per week by end of March, no (after saying it would happen in December last year, so already having 3 extra months) ? Or does he give dates in Elon time but actually plans in real time?

This really makes a lot of sense.

NA production pretty much entered production about this time, a month or so is enough for Tesla to deliver in NA. Once mid March hits, all production goes oversea/international market.

It is 2500/week by end of March and 5000/week by end of June
