So are they replacing everyone's 12 volt battery? I got an email that said they have ordered one for me. I haven't had any issues with it and the ranger just said he was contacted by Tesla to get it swapped out.

Prior to the 4.0 software the MS was drawing an excessive amount of energy when off. I was told, when mine was replaced, that they were seeing the 12v batteries fail on some of the earlier VINs. I am guessing they are either running diagnostics on the 12v batteries and replacing those that have been damaged, or simply replacing a bunch/all of them. That is a pure guess though.

P4201, VIN 2443 - delivered Monday 12/17: great car! Everything positive has been mentioned many times, and it's all true.
My rear hatch lacks power, my navigation doesn't work, dome lights have a life of their own, GPS keeps getting locked up, picture of car on the screen is red but my car is black: Delivery Specialist couldn't figure out why.. I just realized that they loaded the non-tech software on my tech-optioned car.. really lame... called in to TESLA this morning - this will be a check of their customer service and "service recovery" - will post follow up as it happens.

I'd skip customer service and call the closest service center and have a ranger out PDQ!

I had an interesting and annoying issue crop up with the driver door yesterday after the 4.0 update installed - it won't open from the outside. The handle comes out when I unlock the car, but when I pull on it the door does not open. I also noticed that the light in the door handle is no longer illuminating as well. I tried rebooting and that did not fix the issue. I decided to run over to the Menlo Park store and have them take a look. They tried a variety of things and still could not get it fixed. Supposedly had nothing to do with the 4.0 update. They are having a part shipped in that will hopefully fix it after I drop it off tomorrow morning. I know this is part of being in the 1.0 crowd, but disappointing nonetheless since I've had the car 5 days.

It is definitely much different from ICE cars. But I'm not sure how I would solve it. The behavior is an inevitability, based upon how the car operates. I do find that the time it takes me to try to find the right accelerator spot (to avoid the aggressive regen) can become dangerous as I'm approaching the car in front of me. That's why ACC would really have been helpful...

This can be solved. I'm not sure yet what would be the best algorithm, but I thought I'd first explain how my 2001 Think does something similar.

The original Think has regen on the brake pedal. It has two levels of regen. One brief touch on the pedal enables regen mode and the car starts low-power regen. Touching the brake lightly and holding increases regen to high power. But in low-regen mode, if I press the accelerator slightly, I can lower the regen smoothly - in this mode, the accelerator changes meaning from "accelerate" to "brake less" - because that's consistent with how engine braking would work. If I then release the accelerator, it will go back to full low-power regen. Pressing the accelerator to the point where it actually sends positive power into the motor disables regen mode.

If the car accelerates down a hill without me touching the accelerator, the regen will softly "catch it" and hold speed constant. The regen fades in ever so smoothly. A quick dab on the accelerator will then allow it to accelerate about 3 km/h before the regen softly holds it back again - or I can smoothly adjust speed by depressing the accelerator carefully.

The idea I'm trying to convey here is that these cars are fully programmable, Tesla can do anything they like.

One suggestion as to what they might do when the cruise control is disabled would be to first fade in low-power regen fairly quickly. When you depress the accelerator by such an amount that you are requesting a lower level of regen than what the car is already doing, control is fully transferred back to the pedal. Touching the brake pedal might fade in full regen.

I had this same problem yesterday. I loaded the 4.0 update while at work yesterday and driving it during lunch time everything was fine. Then after work I went to my stepdaughters house and as soon as I put the car in park the front passenger door poped open. I walked around and opened it and closed the door. When I went to leave the passenger door handle would open however pulling on the handle wouldn't open the door - the granddaughter opened the door from the inside. When I closed the door and tried to open it again it still wouldn't open. I then drove to my next destination and tried it again. This time and since then it has been fine.

I had an issue this morning with the main screen. It was totally black and wouldn't boot up. Everything was on because I could open my security gates and control the heater but that was from memory of where the controls were. I exited the car and tried a reboot with no results. I called service when they opened and was told that I will need to bring it in for them to look at, in other words no quick fix. After my first stop, the screen came back to life but still no phone connection. I did another reboot and the phone finally connected. Still having trouble with navigation moving the map as I move. It looks like I will need to bring it in and see if they can repeat any of these issues.

Even with these issues I'm still loving the car.

I'm seeing a lot of dead 12v battery issues. I used to have an emergency booster battery that you plug into the 12v socket, wait a few minutes, then crank the car over. Do you think one of these devices would work in a pinch? Seems a lot better than waiting for a Ranger or a tow...

Please refrain from cross-posting. This post has appeared in four different threads. This is an appropriate thread for your mechanical issues, but posting the same thing over and over to other threads is not necessary as most of us do keep up on most of the threads.

They said they'd be willing to send it to a 3rd party body shop (in Los Angeles) and see what they can do, but told me that past attempts on other cars yielded almost no difference. They said that there's very little that they can do. My hood, when closed, looks like it isn't closed. I can stick my entire finger into the gap -- all the way up to my hand. I can do this from either side (left or right). My roof has scratches (down the metal). My leather seats in the rear had several punctures. The detailing job was abysmal. There's gunk (adhesive?) on two different pieces of glass that just won't come off no matter what powerful chemical I try on it. Very disappointed. Why aren't these things corrected before it leaves the factory? Why aren't these things corrected before leaving the Service Center (where it is prepped)? BTW, I took delivery at one of those group delivery events, so no excuses, can't blame it on the trucking company. The Tesla employees are wonderful and friendly, but that doesn't make up for the cars being delivered in ****** condition and with multiple persistent "check engine" problems.

Would love to see pics to get a better sense of the issues.

If its as bad as you say, you should have refused to take delivery.

Wow. That's really appalling. My car has nowhere near that degree of trouble. You need to escalate this within Tesla until you get satisfaction. No way the car should be delivered with damaged paint, damaged leather, etc.

I agree. No car should be delivered in that condition. Most of us expect some small things given this stage in the game but nothing like that.

Here are the issues that I have had with resolutions where available:
1) Sunroof wouldn't open fully - This was strange. When I slid the control back to say 50% the roof would only open to the vent position and stop. Then if I slid back to 50% again then the roof would go all the way back to 50%. I thought this was a design feature, but was told by my Telsa ranger Nick (great guy by the way) that this was not so. He came and looked at the car and thought maybe the roof had to be replaced - not something going over well with me. After a few calls to some Tesla repair guys in California, they said that they had run into this before and that the culprit is some extra sealant that gets near the track of the sunroof mechanism that causes it to stop prematurely. Sure enough, we found the extra sealant and removed this and the roof now works fine. Great database of problems that they have!
2) The car would charge on 110v but not 240v. This was not a Telsa issue but I'm putting it here so that if anyone else has this problem, here is the solution. When I plugged into the 240V NEMA 14-50 - the car would not charge - even the light on the charger would not light up. I had my electrician come by and check the outlet and it showed power to both hot outlets. Had Nick from Tesla come by with a different charge cable with the same result (can charge on 110 but not 240). My breaker box didn't have any available slots to put in a new 50-amp breaker so my electrician had used a half-height 50-amp breaker. This breaker is still 50 amp rated and has the two phases needed for 240V but is half-height. Thinking that this may be the problem, we switched the connection to another full-height 50-amp breaker and everything worked. I guess that there is something about the half-height breaker that the charger doesn't like.
3) My screen shows 19inch wheels while my car has 21 inch wheels - this was fixed by Nick.
4) Homelink issues. Programming my gate - I have a gate at the end of my driveway with a remote. I've programmed my other cars homelink for this with no problems. The Tesla did learn the code, but it takes me pressing and holding the button on my transmitter on my button for 20 seconds for it to learn. The problem is that when I try to open the gate using home link, The gate starts to open and quickly closes again. It is like the home link is sending two signals each time I press it or the signal is being sent for too long a period of time and the gate thinks that there are two signals being sent- an open and a close. I'm going to try to resolve this with my DS. The second issue is that when in reverse, the backup camera automatically displays on screen which is fine. The problem is that this overlays on top of the home link display such that only the top line of the home link display is shown (in my case it is for my garage door). The problem for me is that I have to back out of the garage and I also have a gate at the end of the driveway. With the car in reverse and the backup camera displayed, this gate item is covered up. Therefore I have to put the car back in park, open the gate, and then finish backing out of my driveway. I think Tesla should overlay the home link on top of the backup camera display which would fix this.
5) Bluetooth audio issue - I have an iPhone and I've been able to pair this over bluetooth and the music plays great using the bluetooth connection. But when I stop the car and get back in, I have to reselect my phone and start playing the media again each time. I would think that the car should remember this and automatically do this. Hopefully this will be fixed by a future update.

But like I said, the car is awesome!

Same with my sunroof...I removed some of it myself but the ranger is coming tomorrow to fix it properly

My pano roof wouldn't open after the 4.0 update (one version of it at least) but they were able to remote in and recalibrate and it is working again.

Ok, so here are some pictures of where the excess sealant was that was blocking the roof. This was definitely contributing to the problem for me, but still occasionally the roof is stopping in the vent position and then I have to reslide it back for it to go all the way. The sealant is black in color. This may be a software issue with the 4.0 update - I can't tell because my car came with this update.

ditto. if anything, it's better, IMO, to present potential owners with a realistic view of the vehicle than to pretend it's all rosy.

Yep. People need to understand what they are getting into (new car from a new company) so issues like this are more likely than maybe in a BMW car that's been in production for a few years. That doesn't mean of course that Tesla shouldn't work to minimize these issues and correct them for already delivered cars of course.

Took my car into Menlo today to have a bunch of small issues corrected (they even said they would look at the hard to close front passenger door).
Much to my chagrin and surprise, they drove me over to Enterprise car rental for a loaner car, where I was originally presented with a Toyota Corolla. WTF?
When it was obvious that safety was a concern for me in the car (my knees touched the dash with the seat all the way back), I got switched to a POS Impala.

I had no idea that I would be stuck with a junker. It really pissed me off to be honest...

My experience with other car companies was always 100% different. With Mercedes, Acura, and Honda, I always got a comparable or better car. When I make an appointment, I am usually out of there in 10 minutes or less.

This morning I spent an hour at Tesla, and an hour at Enterprise. And now, using this car for the next few days, I have to actually BUY GAS again!!! ;-)

Tesla really needs to do something about this level of service.

--> Quick Edit: The guys at Menlo were awesome, but it took a long time and I was in a rush to get to work, and then I ended up with a klunker.
