@Saxena is right, definitely watch for Destination Chargers. We are on week 13 (just over 11,000 miles) of our MS90D shakedown drive of the lower 48 -- much of it off the supercharger network. We've made extensive use of DC's cuz they allow us to recharge while we sleep.

I would also recommend that those planning a long trip, contact Tesla and get a packet of DC brochures to hand out to B&B's and motels that do not have a DC. It helps to spread the word and I've been surprised by the number of proprietors who've never even heard of Tesla.

My only caution would be to review the supercharger/destination charger situation before you set off. Yellowstone for example is easy to get into from the West, but not from the South.

Very true, but still possible from the south!
Not for long!

Supercharger - Jackson WY

Well, OK, still need one somewhere along I-80 in southern WY (Evanston or Rock Springs) to make that more comfortably. The Idaho Falls or Pocatello route from the SW wouldn't be too bad though.

The car detected the roof box and let me unlock the door but they did not move. I could just re lock from the screen.

When you travel with the summer vacation luggage and your three large dogs then you need all the space you can get....... Also the roof box was to make sure it works. Just bought a new narrower one so I can open one of the falcon doors. That works fine as well. And again the covered door unlocks but does not move and can therefore be re-locked again from the central screen. And now the kids can pile in in the middle and the dogs still in th back

Would you mind sharing some more details on the configuration you're using for the roof box (what model is the narrower box that allows one door to still open, what dimensions/orientation/how many kayak mounts do you use to mount the box)? One of my biggest regrets about the X was the loss of our roof box/roof ski mount capacity, but you've just completely solved that problem! Thank you!

Planning a road trip from Folsom to Las Vegas starting tomorrow. EVTripPlanner is giving me route via the Sierras - 50 up to Meyers and then 89 etc via Gardnerville, Hawthorne etc. With the storm passing over the Sierras this weekend wondering if I should still take that route or do the more flat route via Barstow. What do my fellow road trippers say?

Keep in mind that EVTripPlanner does not really know weather. It uses a fixed temp and wind. With variable weather conditions plus the effects of precipitation I suspect it's modeling will be off. I would be wary of that route during a storm compared to I5/I15. And you are only talking a 9 minute difference in trip time according to Google. You will eat that up quickly if you have to slow on US 50 for chain controls.

I believe Barstow is down.
Thanks @ohmman for alerting us to status of Barstow. Apparently it was vandalized.

@aesculus - how are you getting 9mins difference in time between the two routes. I am getting an hour difference at the least and that is assuming Barstow was open.

Checked the trip planner in the car and it wants to take the Sierra route. I wonder how autonomous car would make it through without recharging at some point before Gardnerville.

I just took a gander at Google, not considering EV.

But with a Tesla, since you need superchargers, the spacing makes all of the difference. Without Barstow in a Model X you are basically screwed. You have to charge so long at your prior stop that you eat up all the time filling up the car at the top. Also getting to Mohave is tough for you via 99 because Tesla put the Bakersfield supercharger on I5 instead of HWY 99. What is that about? It totally screws up using HWY 99 going over to I15.

So in your case going over the Sierras (snow permitting) is probably the best route because the supercharger spacing is much better than going down the Central Valley and you can avoid the issue at Barstow.

I ran some calculations using wind, temp and rain to see what the impacts were.

Here is one trip via 99/I5. It's 11:55 because of really long charging times. You could actually save 30 minutes by stopping at Bakersfield and Barstow SCs too if available, just because you would be charging only at the lower end then.

Took a small road trip from Fremont,CA to Reno, NV yesterday. 100% charge at Fremont starting point. 13% remaining at my destination hotel. Lowest temperature was 29F. My average speed was around 70mph. I was planning to use tesla destination charger at the hotel but the hotel valet refused to plug the car in. They said the chargers are for casino VIPs only, for high spenders only. I had to go use ChargePoint charger at a nearby general parking. So much for Tesla destination charging. :(

You should tell us which hotel this was so we can all avoid them or challenge accordingly.

You should also send an email to the Tesla department that handles destination charging letting them know of your experience.

I completely agree. While I know the rules of destination charging are truly up to the charging host (I've had to pay $25 to charge at a hotel where I was guest before), that sounds more like it's off-limits to many. Tesla should remove it from nav/the website if there are restrictions to the general public.

There's a supercharger in Reno, right?

The hotel name is Silver Legacy. I left a complain with the hotel and will email Tesla about it as well.

There is a supercharger here in Reno, so there is plenty of options to charge, however I rather leave superchargers unocupied for the ones who needs it to charge quickly and move on with their trip. If I am staying somewhere overnight I prefer destination chargers.
