According to Tesla, some states require payment in advance. Is Texas one of them? If not, do they accept a personal check at delivery?

    Thanks.

I did an electronic transfer the day before picking it up. I believe they will accept a cashier's check for the balance due. Doubtful that a personal check would be OK. Ask your delivery specialist. This is one topic upon which they are very responsive.

I was able to pay with a personal check in PA. But I agree, the DS is the person to ask.

I paid in advance with the DS knowing if car was anything less than perfect it would be refused. I had home delivery. I have read on the forums evey different story from I paid for it a couple days after they left the car at my house keys with a neighbor and such.....to paid in full upfront .

If car is not to satisfaction. Paid in advance or not. Do not drive away in car. Something about possession 9/10ths of blah blah. Stories are endless on the subject. Last part would be my thing.

I will never pay in advance. I want to see what I'm buying first. Denver took a check.

This. If I were to be told that payment in advance is required, I'd politely reply that they are welcome to cancel my order and refund all deposits. Otherwise I'll pay at delivery. Far, far too many cases of unsatisfactory deliveries to be comfortable paying sight unseen.

Note that this is not a knock on Tesla. It's just common sense for a purchase this large with potential drawn-out resolution.

In Texas they cannot accept payment 'in Texas' so no handing of anything to anyone in Texas.

As I had to have my car rebuilt, I went to pre-inspect the car two days before the delivery day and associated paperwork which Tesla wants in advance of you driving the car away. They had to fix issues, so my two day advance turned into weeks, but they gave me a loaner in the meantime. Tesla does try to take care of the buyers. I just wish they had someone other than the 'blind' guy at the end of the factory line doing final QA in Fremont.

If you have everything set up on your end and Mercury is not in retrograde, then you can do an ACH payment through the My Tesla website, and all that should clear within a matter of minutes. You can go to delivery, inspect the car, pay through My Tesla via your phone, and be all set.

Again, that's if nothing goes wrong.

I may have lied. I think I transferred on the site, not a check... But done after inspection.

I did some research on the difference between ACH (Automated Clearing House) and Wire Transfer. Essentially they are both the same but an ACH transfer is a batch transfer, usually free, usually every night or every other night depending on your financial institution. A Wire Transfer happens instantly but you pay extra for that privilege. When I paid for my Tesla my delivery was scheduled on a Saturday so I initiated the ACH transfer for the cash balance on the prior Wednesday mid-day. I got a "pending" notice on Thursday's balance sheet from my credit union (MyTesla showed I had a zero-owed balance) and a posted transaction on Friday. The my credit union actually funded my loan on Thursday by dumping the money into a temporary savings account in my name, then did a wire transfer of that money to Tesla. Then the temporary savings account was closed/deleted.

I asked if I could just write a personal check for my car, and they said any amount over 10K needs to be a cashiers check. So I brought them a cashiers check. Only issue is they made me give them the check BEFORE I could even see the car. sneaky.

That bothered me as well. I had explicitly asked my DS several times whether I could bring a personal check for the balance owed, and he said that would not be a problem at all. Then when I got the call to actually pick up the car, they balked and did not want to accept my check. I pointed out that it was a Sunday, and I would not be able to return with a cashier's check for a couple of days (which would put it after the end of the quarter). So they eventually decided it was ok to take my personal check after all, and I took delivery that day.

This was 3 years ago, and it sounds like they haven't made the process any clearer than before. Perhaps when it's time to buy a second Tesla as @ohmman did, they may be more inclined to accept my personal check as a repeat customer, but I would be less inclined to take the chance.

They accepted a personal check in the Dallas SC. As someone already suggested, check with your DS for details.

My experience was nothing short of exceptional. Guys at both Plano and Dallas were super helpful to me.
