Production X Configuration Has Begun!

Sorry this happened to you, and I'm not trying to be a jerk: Which part were you confused by? After you submit an order you have 7 days to make changes before it confirms (or you can confirm it early). After that, it's $500 to make a change, and it's not always possible. Did you think you had 7 days after the order confirmed?
I certainly thought had 7 days after order confirmed to make changes without being hit with $500 change fee. That's way I read purchase order and also in communication from delivery specialist. But Tesla Motors says regardless of wording of purchase order once order confirmed any changes cost $500. In other words 7 day window starts when get invitation to configure. I am on verge of just cancelling the order and saving $119K. First aggravation of having to wait another probably 10 months for delivery for not choosing performance version. And now being nickeled and dimed over minor changes. Not the consumer friendly Tesla Motors that I remember. Three years ago this month I called Tesla several weeks after configuration to ask that exterior color be changed on MS from pearl white to signature red, they called back and said car was about to go into production but agreed to make change. Fast forward three years and am probably at least 10 months from production and they insist on charging $500 for any change regardless how minor. Disappointing, not what I expected from this company.

How can the 7 day window start from the time you are asked to configure, this makes no sense since you might wait for months to finalize you configuration. Once the design studio is available to you then you can play around with your options, nothing is done until you finalize that configuration. Did I miss something?

The window starts when you confirm, not when asked to configure.

Actually I believe it starts when you order.

1. Invite to configure
2. Order
3. Confirm

Confirm will happen automatically 7 days after you order, or if you hit the confirm button. After step 3, the deposit is non refundable and changes cost $500. That's why they give you 7 days between step 2 and 3.

Yep. Window starts when you order your vehicle.

While it sounds like you did misunderstand the process, if Tesla were to allow changes following order confirmation, then they reasonably wouldn't start production on a vehicle until a step of 'no, okay, this is really the car I want and I won't make changes' occurs. That's the 'confirmed' part of the process.

Buyers use this information to order parts. Production is scheduled in the most efficient way based on configurations. Changing an order after submitted to the factory causes a great deal of disruption. That's why there is a 7 day period between configuring and confirming, so that you have time to change your mind.

It was great they were able to accommodate you before in a paint change with no charge. They did a lot of accommodations like that for customers - and I suspect that's why they now have a firm non-negotiable answer on changes following confirmation now. Can you imagine the disruption and cost all those changes caused?

I ordered last Monday, but was traveling and didn't get a chance to press the "confirm now" button, and now the button is gone. It still says it confirms automatically next Monday so no biggie. Hope it doesn't move me back in line, my anticipation level is completely out of hand. Here was my order if anyone's interested:

P90D - no ludicrous. (Can't justify it but I'd sure love to test drive it on someone else's...)
Deep blue metallic / Ultra-white / Black headliner (love how the white seats look against the blue when the doors are open. Wife very skeptical about the white seats with two kids and big dog but I'm well beyond the realm of logic here)
Matt obeche
6 seat (kids can be separated = harmony; dog can stick her nose in between = complete harmony)
Autopilot (cannot even allow this to cross my mind without grinning like an idiot)
Subzero weather package (cold up in here)

What I didn't get:
Premium sound (assume the base system is pretty decent, can't justify)
Premium package (lengthy internal debate, find auto-presenting doors maybe a touch over the top for me, sorry to give up ventilated seats and turning LEDs. Mostly, saying no to something substantial made me feel better about this whole insane splurge)
Towing

Bring it Elon, I cannot wait.

By accommodating my change request without nickel and dime change fee they got loyal customer responsible for at least 6 MS sales past 3 years now with $1000 referral credit. Tesla Motors got lot more from that customer relations action than $500 change fee. I think it is questionable customer relations to charge change fee to customers whose vehicles won't be produced for many months when almost none of customers have had opportunity to see the vehicle in person. I could understand company reserving right not to make changes but think the nickel and dime change fee on very expensive vehicle is not good customer relations.

I have a question that may have likely been answered elsewhere but couldn't find it. I was invited to configure 11/30. Did so but didn't confirm because I was out of the country and wanted to go into my local showroom to test drive the autopilot to see if I wanted it. Did so today and decided to add that to my X90D. However when I look at the documents at the bottom of the screen one of which is the Purchaser Order Agreement, it doesn't show my change of adding the AutoPilot. On my screen it shows "Your Model X will be confirmed on December 7th. Does this mean I need to contact them prior to the 7th so they can update that Agreement? Or will it automatically update now that I have pressed "Done" after adding the Autopilot feature? TIA for any assistance.

Your Model X will be confirmed on December 7, 2015.

So sflecarfan, I change one thing on Monday night after I configured. Dark Ash to matte obeche. My configuration details did not show the change but my dollar amount did reflect the change. I called Dedham Tesla Tuesday morning to get an explanation about the 72 amp charger and during that conversation, I asked the DS to verify my change to the matte obeche. He said his computer showed the change. Later that day, I saw the confirm button with the updated change and I confirmed. I hope this helps !

That helps! Thanks so much TSLAX!! I'm so excited I just want to be sure I didn't miss anything or miss any windows to change. Seems like I'm all good. Now to just patiently wait for delivery:biggrin:

What a relief to make an order after having held reservations with Tesla since the early days of the Model S. I hope living over 80 miles from my nearest service center works out in the end.

I lived 220 miles from the nearest service center for the first 2 years, and am still 190 miles from the new closest...and others are much farther. You'll be fine.
