Tesla moments

I must wonder if she mistook it for another car. The Chrysler 200 looks similar at least, and I've occasionally mistaken the headlights of an oncoming newer Ford hatchback something-or-other for a Tesla until it got close enough ... oh, a grille ... never mind.
Nope, she knew it was a Tesla, but obviously didn't educate herself fully on her own dream car!

Sadly, many people don't spend much effort on their dreams and -- surprise! -- they remain dreams.
Right? When I first became aware of Tesla (by randomly seeing a roadster next to me one day), I immediately googled the car maker and read everything I could get my hands on. Then, when the Model S came out, I built multiple configs online, watched every video, lurked on TMC, and basically could have been a delivery specialist before ever driving one. I'm sure so many of us here did that, so I was surprised by the question when she knew it was a Tesla and said it was her dream car!

She also said something about "finally getting my settlement from Toyota". Interesting...must have been a big one

Here's an anticipated Tesla moment: My son's daycare is doing a "Trunk or Treat" where parents are asked to decorate the trunks of their cars and pass out goodies to the kids for Halloween. We signed up and are going to be the first to "Frunk or Treat." I am thinking maybe spread some fake cobwebs, hang skeleton from the frunk latch, and have a bunch of candy that they can grab from the frunk. Should be fun.

Hmm, that gives me an idea. I need to get a couple 4-foot tall skeletons for the rear-facing seats. Drive around with a little Halloween festivity!

... driving back from the Birmingham (UK) showroom with my new S60D on Tuesday, I was waiting for a BMW 5 Series to pass me in the outside lane of the motorway so I could overtake a lorry, but it was hanging just off my rear driver-side. Looking back over my shoulder, the BMW driver was taking pictures or filming my Tesla on his phone.

This is very common in my experience, cars that you expect to overtake you don't materialize on either side when you expect them to, then you realize they slowed down to look at / photograph / video the Tesla.

I now think of them as 5 o'clock or 7 o'clock lurkers ...

I had a gawker yesterday at a 4 way stop. I arrived about 1/2 second after he did, so I signaled him to go. He sat there for a few seconds looking at me and finally went when I signaled again. As he crossed the intersection he looked at me the whole time, as I was 90 degrees to him I didn't think it was all that safe, but the penny finally dropped about why he hesitated.

We had a great time at the Landmark Park Car show. Probably 100 people stopped by and talked Tesla. Again, one of the primary questions was how much does one cost and why would I buy one? My only answer to the why is because I love cars and tech and this is the best of both. My passion is cars. I see many people spending a lot more money for their duelly diesel crew cab trucks all decked out pulling huge campers and or boats and of course motor homes that cost 1/4 to 1/2 mil. I have no desire for any of that making the Tesla very affordable.View attachment 197111

I'll be doing that in 2 weeks. Every October I get about 140 lbs of apples and we don't buy fruit for about 4 months. They keep very well if washed with food grade hydrogen peroxide, then stored in the spare refrigerator.

I think I'll have more than a frunk full though...

I had a couple of Tesla moments today. I'm on the first leg of my first road trip to California. In Portland I passed a Maserati on the freeway. I looked over and he was grinning. After I passed him he sped up, pulled even with me and waved. I waved back.

I also had my first negative Tesla moment. Across the street from the Mt Shasta supercharger was a spectacular view of the mountain. The air was perfectly clear and it was dusk so the low sun was lighting up the mountain. I stopped in the parking lot, out of everyone's way, and took several pictures of the mountain. As i was leaving an SUV was going out the same exit from the opposite direction. Out the back window someone flipped me the bird as they went by. I couldn't have possibly done anything to tick them off.

I also heard what people have talked about with the milling sound. As I was just hooking up at the Springfield, OR SC an older Tesla was leaving and the motor made a horrible electric sound as they pulled away. If they had been coming in I probably would have talked to them about it.

Leg 2 tomorrow, I will pass close to where the car was built in Fremont, but I won't be able to stop. I need to get to Morgan Hill by noon and I'm in Red Bluff now. I'm also using a destination charger for the first time tonight. The Best Western in Red Bluff has two. It's not a fancy hotel, but convenient, has a hot breakfast, and at least one of the destination chargers works fine. They also have an extremely friendly stray cat in the parking lot. Apparently his human died a few months back and he became homeless. Te clerk at the front desk has been trying to find a more permanent home for him.

Three supercharging stops today and I haven't had to wait for the car to charge. At each stop I had something I needed to do (like eat, take care of nature's call, and in one case take a short nap) and the car was ready to go when I was.

Road rage incident today. Guy got out of his car and smacked my window a few times. Tried to open my door but couldn't find the handle. Nothing like a pissed-off confused redneck to make my evening.

That would have raised my concern a lot more than the typical stuff you see. I don't get phased by the (thankfully, rather rare) people who yell, give you a colorful hand signal, or honk. But walk up to my window and smack it?

I carry one of these in the center console. Note: Please check your state and local laws before purchase, several states prohibit a pepper spray for personal defense that's this large. If you're in a state with a 2 oz restriction, use this one instead. Additionally, there are a few states where pepper spray is illegal, a few others that require a license, and some where you must buy it from a licensed dealer, not online.

Summary of state-by-state laws is here, but double check because the information may be out of date.

(Sorry for the off-topic post, probably should make a separate thread).
