What about the tow hitch?

The problem here in Europe is that is the manufacture don’t write in the registration that the car is capable of towing, you are not aloud to tow. Now, some will maybe attach a tow ever way but it probably stop a lot of people from buying the Model 3 and continue with there fossil car.
That’s crap. A car manufacturer may have simply not made the effort on a particular model (eg: with micro sized cars)
After market modifications should be allowed if they comply with certain regulatory standards.

Can you install a tow hitch after market to then mount a bike rack?

And here is the source Monroney for a non-PUP car, google found on Reddit. Exactly the same. No PUP, does have heated seats in the Standard section. (Original source actually TMC: https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/attachments/img_0664-jpg-1-jpeg.246202/ )

As we thought, all cars have heated front seats as part of Standard Features, as the Monroney states. PUP includes all seats heated, as stated.

Heated cloth seats.
Uncommon, but it’s positive.

Also dual climate zone standard - nice, but a little gimmicky.

That's the case with Model S, there are many Model S owners on the Swedish Tesla forum that would like to tow with there car but don't do it because of that it's not legal. A hitch for bike rack I do believe is legal but it would indeed be easier if Tesla offer it.

Reviving a thread instead of starting a new one...

Just got email confirmation from Torklift about the Model 3 Hitch saying they expect release by end of Feb:

Hi Loren,

Thank you for your inquiry and support. We currently have a Model 3 in the shop and are working on creating a hitch for it now. We have already created the LAW license plate bracket and I would expect to see both released by the end of the month. If you have anymore questions please feel free to ask.

Thank you,

Now that's good news. Excellent.

Maybe we should be talking to the vendors instead of waiting for Tesla news.

Oh wait....I bet you the vendors have to sign an NDA or something.

This is good news. I want a tow hitch just for carrying bikes. Hopefully they've solved the galvanic corrosion problems: Tesla Model S hitch by Torklift (3 year update): Eaten alive Probably not an issue in California but definitely something to pay attention to. That part of the Model 3 is aluminum just like the S.

Just need something to keep the materials from touching each other. You can use mylar or thin coating of silicone, probably lots of other solutions as well. Just something to keep the materials apart and not absorb water.

Fantastic news. Thanks for posting. This was the last thing keeping us from committing to a Model 3 to replace our Leaf. We need to lug bikes around and prefer to do so on a receiver mounted rack.

Yes same as a few previous posters mentioned... I need it purely for bike trailer and paramotor rack. Don't plan on doing any towing. The manual, on page 130, states the following:

Towing a Trailer

Warning: Do not use Model 3 for towing purposes. Model 3 does not currently support towing. Towing can cause damage and increase the risk of a collision.

Caution:
Using Model 3 for towing before Tesla-approved towing components and accessories are available may void the warranty.

Which is slightly scary if we install the Torklift... but it does specify towing not just mounting bike racks etc. Maybe Tesla will approve Torklift hitches? Doubtful.

That manual excerpt is interesting. I'll not be ordering till I can get a tow hitch... Just hope my deposit keeps me in line. I'm just about to sell my i3 REX.. After 3 years and 80k I'm going to have to make do with an 07 Focus 1.6i auto till the Model 3 is available in the UK. My current tow car.

Worst case scenario is that's it's only rated for 750kg which means goodbye to the idea of a caravan. It might seem odd but last time I was camping a 1 series BMW 120d turned up with a huge caravan on the back and I thought surely not legal. Looked it up... Only 1150kg and the 120d was rated to tow about 1400kg. I don't hold much hope the Model 3 will pull that much very far... But I'm happy to stop off en route and do my charging. It's a holiday so not in a rush.

My main tow need is for a hitch mount bike rack and a 750kg unbraked box trailer I use for my business. And trips to the dump/builders merchants so I don't need up the car interior. Would love to get rid of the rusty old focus and say goodbye to ICE forever. Jag iPace may turn up with a tow option sooner... so Tesla better hurry up.

Torklift's Model 3 hitch appears to be available now: 2018 Tesla Model 3 EcoHitch
It's a shame that EU laws prevent us from towing anything if the vehicle has no tow rating. Type approval laws. Though once I get the invite to configure I'll be contacting the UK inspectorate as it may be possible to get a car through on the single vehicle assessment scheme. (How we get road legal hot rods and kit cars). It's basically used whenever you make major changes to a vehicle like adding seats, structural alterations or changing weight classes. Is have thought adding a USA designed towbar to a car it was designed to fit might pass an inspection... After initial discussions and diagrams.

That said... But the time they start shipping right hand drive, they might have the official hitch available ;)

I got my Volvo 5 years ago and put a tow hitch on straight away, never used it, doing it again...
Nice one Randy. I know we're often told we buy cars for the 1% use-case and this seems to prove the point somewhat. Though I've used the tow hitch on our vehicles greater than zero times for each car, it's around that 1% mark so it's not much more than you've used yours if averaged per year. And I've had a towbar on every road car I've owned.

And I hasten to add, will very likley do the same for the next!
