Endorse my letter to Tesla for supporting 3-phase charging for the Model S

It's going well with the endorsements, but keep them coming! Some people write complete stories, nice to see :)

I read though your letter. I'd add a mention that the Model S connector they've shown can't support 3-phase. I'd also try to include info about more countries in Europe. E.g., I think Switzerland has around 100 Roadsters, but many are stuck with slow charging (10 Amps?). I also had heard a rumor that the Zurich store had to get an expensive 3 to single phase converter just to be able to charge at a reasonable rate. Something worth looking into.

Good Luck.

is it to late to include some extra maps
here in denmark we are planning the setup 2000 new charge station next year

practically all new new instalations will support 3x16Amp (Mennekes)
some places will also have CHAdeMO charges for quick charge

Yes, there is time!

the more maps, the better.

I'm indeed staying away from the DC charging question. I'll pick this up tomorrow and put in the new recommendations.

That large box shape cutout in the 'frunk' does seem about the right size to house something like that!

(Alternatively, might also be a good place for a big subwoofer for those so inclined.)

I agree... lets see if the Tesla management and owners are capable of understanding the issues with 3-Phase in Mainland Europe

They understand, but underestimate the result of ignoring the facts. If Tesla would not cover the need of their european customer, as George Blankenship promised on his speech in february at the Tesla Store Opening in Milan, Tesla will loose his position in Europe.

I've been looking at these maps, but I haven't been able to get any information out of them.

I only want maps with 3-phase charging stations on them, could you find those for me?

Btw, don't forget to sign the endorsement and sent it to me!

Hi widodh

Better Place and ChooseEV are both installing the new Mennekes connector at each location
the private is old ICC Red/Blue and domestic 230/16
the Government is mix of them all, but all arrange by, different city councils

so to be safe only use the 2 first, they are also the ones that are updatet, and are being expanded

yes I plan to sign and send the letter, but I only have acces to a printer at work :)

Photovoltaic Systems are similar to EV Charging, they limit single phase to 20A 230V

Photovoltaic Power range of individual systems covered by standard in Germany (EU)

up to 4.6 kVA (inverter) or 5 kWp (PV generator) single phase
connection is permitted (VdEW Guideline).

Above 4.6 kVA (inverter) 20A 230V three-phase connection is requested.
All systems need approval by local grid operator

Is it possible to convert the 3 phase power?
That is exactly what a 3-phase charger will do. It will convert 3-phase AC to DC power.

But you can also take 3 separate AC chargers and have them all draw power from a different phase.

Most of this is covered in other topics, but short answer: Yes.

But we want to have a solution which is covered by Tesla's warranty to prevent any discussion should something go wrong. Better be safe than sorry.

You letter is great.

But I think, there should be some kind of a "management summary" at the top, listing the most important not too technical facts, so Elon can decide quickly any can have his staff handle the details.

For example:
Internal 3-Phase Charging for the Model S is essential for eurpoean customers because:
  1. Allmost every european home has a 3x16A or 3x32A outlet
  2. In Europe, you can't draw more than XXkW on a single phase, so charging a Model S fully over night is not possible on one phase
  3. Most public charging stations in Europe are 3-Phase charging stations
  4. In Europe more customers will have to use public charging stations, because less people have a garage of their own
  5. We expect a rather slow roll out of tesla 90kW DC-chargers along the european highways
