biggest problem i see is the aquisition of the body panel stamping press. unless it is already being build i think it is going to take a bit for such specialised equiptment to be build and shipped ?
Stamping equipment probably won't make it to China in 2019. They can start "production" by just shipping bodies/parts/motors and assemble them in a GA4-type line. Then gradually add the other parts of the manufacturing process to GF3.

I'm guessing Chinese presses using American dies. Tesla bought that Michigan company that designs dies. My guess is that the time to install a Chinese press isn't too long.

The paint shop is less straightforward and harder to predict. Tesla good comfort level and expertise is with their fancy European paint shop. But perhaps an all-Chinese setup makes more sense. We will probably never know.

China GF construction status.

Thats an impressive large area and they did build already a Chinese wall around it and it looks like started some first prep work at the entrance.

Impressive leveling job, that's a lot of land to level. Next steps are transport and utility interconnects and foundation work.

Large wooden poles = power poles? Not sure.

Only one backhoe? When is completion scheduled- 2237?

And look at how disturbed all that mud looks, now we know where all those extra Model 3s were stashed!

SELL! SELL!

Huge land. Either it should have rained very heavily the last few days, or it is partial swamp land. But not as big as the land in GF1, I presume

Shanghai is one of the most vulnerable major cities on Earth to flooding. And GF3 is reclaimed land. Concerns related to this have been extensively discussed previously and probably should not be resurrected in this thread.

That "river" you see in the video? That's a flood control canal. The entire area is a tight grid of them; check it out on Google Maps.

One hopes (presumes?) that Tesla will not rely on Shanghai's spotty record of keeping its land dry, and will instead design GF3 so that losses are minimal if the first X meters of the plant get flooded (e.g. keeping valuable / water-sensitive hardware elevated). One also presumes that they'll build to withstand Cat 5 typhoons. At least, hopefully they don't decide to cut corners to save money or time.

Some numbers for this thread, although surely they also have been shown elsewhere:

Using the 860,000 sq. m. number provided upthread, that equals 210 acres or 160 American football fields. For further reference, there are several football (soccer) fields showing in the aerial photo upthread.

That land is really flat. The soggy nature of the land suggested in the latest drone video is accurate. Hence the drainage canals still extant in the being-worked land; these also show in the older survey plats if you refer back to them. One of the upsides of this is that Hangzhou Bay is effectively immediately adjacent, and any number of the adjacent industrial plants have their own loading jetties built into the bay - what a fine logistical bonus that would be were Tesla also to be able to create same. There also are arterial roads in the immediate location.

Overall, by looking at a googlemaps view and 3-D + rotating, it looks to me just like any amount of land in the Netherlands: flat, sodden yet eminently usable for heavy industry given the appropriate groundwork. There already exist good-sized plants right there - not GF sized, but still large - and at least a few 5- to 6- story office buildings (I think not apartments).

PS: for whoever wrote "just one backhoe!" in a shorty farce in the other thread....no. That's an excavator. Real builders don't use backhoes.:p

Here is one such 3-D shot:

It's right next to the water. I hope Tesla has made 100-year floodplain assessment and built it accordingly.
Building maximum height is 100 feet, GF1 is 71 feet, so they have room to elevate. I wonder if they might have it on columns with drive under loading and unloading of materials and cars.

Thank you.

So only making cars or will it also build batteries? Well, given that it is called GF, i am guessing it is making batteries plus cars ?

Yes, plan is vehicles and cells.

There are 0 plans to make cells in GF3 at this time.

From looking at the photos, and remembering that watermelons used to grow there there seems no way to put in a tent there.

On the other hand there is a large industrial building bordering water near by so Tesla is not the first with the challenge.
