I don't get how Admiral's prices can be so all over the place.

I'm currently insured with Admiral on my Q5 and pay £350 for me and my wife (38 & 37) but Admiral want over £850 for the mY - 20 years No Claims, No Convictions etc etc - So frustrating.
I had a dreadful experiance trying to get a deal from Admiral. They currently insure my wifes Yaris Hybrid and thought it would be worth seeing iwhat they could do for my mX LR.

I'm 37 my wife is 31 with 19/10 years NCB, no points etc, the car is kept in a garage, behind an electric gate almost half a mile from the road ,on the outskirts of a sleepy village with next to no crime and is covered by CCTV. They quoted me £1090 with a £200 mandatory excess and would not budge at all.

I'm 23 so my experience is likely going to be fairly different as insurers seemingly just assume you are GOING to crash the car...

But for me Directline was a good 30% cheaper than everyone else and sometimes even more.
I've been with Admiral for 4 years but they couldn't give me a quote anywhere near Directline.

The only issue with directline is they confirmed they consider a paint protection film to be a third party modification and would not insure the car if I got one :/
Which....is a bit counterintuitive and frustrating

Yeouch, no thanks Aviva!

Same cars, same level of excess etc from Admiral just over £800. The CitiGo is my daughter's, that makes up £340 of the Admiral quote. Aviva don't seem to do a breakdown, but I assume they don't like insuring Teslas...

The relationship with DL goes back to 2017, well before the Model 3 arrived in the UK. I'm not 100% with the accuracy of this but I believe a Model S owner lived next door to to a senior guy at DL and approached him to seee if they'd be interested in settting up an arrangement. When it first started there were just a couple of staff there that new about the deal, so you had to make sure you spoke to one of them otherwise you got told to do away! And there was a 5% discount if you had Autopilot.

They were really good when the spate of MS & MX theft's were going on, and before the Owners Group had managed to get Tesla to add PIN to Drive via a software update. DL sent us a faraday pouch with some advice on how to try and mitigate against theft. Obviously in their interests as well but a nice touch.

Doesnt't mean they are all things to all men though. I tend to yo yo between DL and LV but YMMV :)
I found it impossible to get a Model Y quote from DL online without quoting a registration plate. I need an idea of cost before I decide to order the model Y.
Do I hear you sigh: "If you are concerned about the insurance cost, you can't afford the car!?"

My existing insurer, Admiral were very helpful; they quoted the cost of the swop from X3 to model Y between May and the end of the policy in December and then extrapolated an estimate for next year.

How I miss the days when the whole families used the same friendly insurance broker. They did all the heavy lifting and presented you with the best three quotes. Their experience directed them to the companies most appropriate for the insured driver and their vehicle type.

I find it amusing how insurance renewals work, it's basically tactical daylight robbery.

I had my renewal quote through from Admiral for the M3LR, for £700. Obviously decided to get quotes online, cheapest I could find was around £600 with DirectLine (once you've added protected no claims and legal cover). Called Admiral to basically tell them to do one and make sure my policy doesn't auto renew (which they've made sure you can't do online, you have to speak to someone) and within a half an hour, they've managed to take that £700 renewal down to £547. A bit more negotiating later, and adding my wife's policy to the deal with multi-car (she's already with Admiral as it turns out), renewal now down to £431 for the year, and the wife's policy is £90 cheaper too.

I'm certain they're just banking on people not bothering to call or look for better deals and let the renewal tick over at a ridiculous price.

Not at all, I consider that good financial planning.

The internet killed the brokers.
Add to that the cost of regulation. Typical commission rates at 10% aren't enough on the average premium to over the overhead. Most Insurers make very little underwriting profit, it's the investment return on the premium their after. Plus the cross selling opportunities etc.

These days IME most brokers will write motor insurance for customers who have other business with them e.g. commercial, value the personal service and aren't particualry price sensitive.

For model y, it seems like there's only the admiral group coming up for me on the comparison sites so far.

Direct line want £300 more than for my Model 3 SR.
I think you're right - all of the comparison sites only offer me Admiral, Elephant & Bell for my MY all of which are the Admiral group.

I called Admiral again yesterday to try and sort my insurance ready for 1st March as I now have my number confirmed and they are still trying to rob me.

I am with Admiral at the minute for my Q5 (due to expire of 18th March) and they said my renewal will be circa £270 although they can't confirm until a little closer to the 18th March. They want £22.00 extra to cover me from 1st March to 18th March when my current 12 month policy expires which I thought was not bad - this includes an admin fee. However for a completely new policy to start on the 1st March they want £843.43  The maths simply doesn't add up!

38 yrs / wife 37
20 yrs NCD
No claims, convictions etc etc. both have completely clean licenses

I've just had a direct line quote for changing my existing policy, rather than as a new customer. They managed to get it to £100 cheaper than the website.. Still an extra £200 over my Model 3.

Admiral group are all ~£1k for me.

With about 25 years no claims bonus, I am currently paying Admiral £785 including European breakdown cover for my X3. Apparently it's my age,
location and overnight on the road. I have a £350 voluntary excess.

For a Model Y and assuming I have the kerb dropped to allow parking off the road and including the European breakdown cover they estimate £1380!
I did not mention the planned protective film for the front end which, I hear is not welcomed by some underwriters.

I need to shop around ....

Just as over time, the vehicle breakdown/rescue industry will recognise that the EV offers an opportunity rather than a problem, as they have in the US and particularly, of course, in CA where generally, at least around the major conurbations, only specialist tow truckers will attend a collision involving an EV, so the insurance industry will get their heads together and fashion a new vice with which to squeeze our gonads - at present it looks like guess work; think of a number and double it even though EVs are, for now, half as likely to have an accident as ICE cars. However, repair cost when they bend their non existent fenders may be higher.

What makes Direct Line's attitude to PPF even stupider is that the Model Y comes with some PPF already on it from manufacturer. It's just a dumb blanket policy.

It's frustrating.. the big name insurers don't even know what ppf is. I've heard LV will insure vehicles with PPF but they don't have the MY on their system yet. Guy on the phone said they update monthly so they should have it on their system in March.
Just spoke to LV and was told they aren’t insuring it at the moment and don’t know whether they will this year. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I was actually (eventually) able to speak with a very pleasant person at Admiral ( they should have a rating agency or is that being petty.....officer?)
Anyway the question regarding options and optional extras is kinda difficult to answer when it's a Tesla or really, to be fair, when it's most high EVs.

We were doing OK until we came to Enhance Autopilot! Never mind enhanced, the word autopilot caused an audible intake of breath. So, we decided to leave EAP moot for now. PPF also remained a love that dare not speak it's name for now. It's ironic, (not Iconic - don't get me started on that), when tech wizardry is used to calculate premiums for tech wizardry, the computer likes "...to say no!"

I'm just glad that Full Self Drive didn't come up.
