I emailed my delivery specialist about the accident and Carfax issue. Here is what she had to say:

We actually will not certify a vehicle that was in a car accident. No need to worry about that!

So that's good news! I guess the only way to check is with a paint thickness gauge in case there are any discrepancies.

Was it used or CPO? Most certified pre-owned programs offer two things: 1/ Inspection by the (shutter) dealer, stating the car has not been in any accidents and is good working order, and 2/ A warranty

I have a friend who discovered within a week of buying a "CPO" car that it had been in an accident, and the dealer bought the car back (after an attorney got involved). They clearly they didn't "inspect" the car as they had stated.
Full-blown CPO, with additional 2 years/50K miles added to the (still active) original warranty.

True, guess the next question is when is a repair reported? I.e. are reputable repair facilities REQUIRED to report repairs that cross some $$$$ threshold even if insurance is NOT involved? I have paid for minor repairs several times one was over $2500 and NONE of these repairs showed up on subsequent CARFAX reports.

seems like a grey area, so maybe there is no way to 100% guarantee your CPO Tesla is "accident free". But a CARFAX report provided to you from Tesla would at leave provide some semblance of due diligence.
It is possible the original accident occured on a race track, and wasn't covered by insurance. If the owner fixed it out of pocket, that may explain why it doesn't show up on CarFax. I don't know where CarFax gets its accident reports, and what the thresholds for reporting are.

My point was just that it is possible for a car to have accident damage not reported to/by CarFax. It can be argued that Teslas are so expensive to repair that it is likely for insurance to be involved in all repairs, and for CarFax to be notified.

But as the disclaimer on their homepage says:

"CARFAX Vehicle History Reports are based on information supplied to CARFAX. CARFAX does not have the complete history of every vehicle. Use the CARFAX search as one important tool, along with a vehicle inspection and test drive, to make a better decision about your next used car."

Great, thanks

BoerumHill, If you go to the CPO consolidator site, and on the top right in the search box, you put in the options with a "," and a space between the options you can narrow down your choices

Ex. CH01, CW01, SC01, RFPO
This means your looking for the following options
CH01Dual Chargers
CW01Subzero Weather Package
SC01Supercharger Enabled
RFPOAll Glass Panoramic Roof

Hope that helps!

Yep, I was playing around with that exact functionality last night on the iPad. Works great!

(ASIDE - when I asked where the codes were, it's because the opts hyperlink doesn't pop open the box with options on my iPhone. I have to be on a tablet or laptop to see it.)

Hank (or anyone helpful) -

Which gray is grey?

The Old Metallic Grey - Dolphin Grey paint code is PMTG

The New Metallic Grey - Steel Grey now called Midnight Silver paint code is PMNG

So when I'm looking at 2012-14 CPO, I presume grey is the classic referred to as Dolphin Grey. But what about 2015 Inventory cars on the CPOC? When did a Dolphin Grey get phased out?

ETA1: 2014

There was a really helpful exterior color thread with a link to a gallery. The gallery was called something like "Model S shows its true colors." Was that the T Sportline photo thread or something else? Can't find it at the moment.

ETA2: Sometime between Vin 37xxx and 52xxx Dolphin Grey was removed.

P37447
COL2-PMTG Grey Metallic

P51536
COL2-PMNG Grey Metallic

This is great news and thanks for sharing. This would be consistent with Mercedes where they will not certify a car that has been in an accident other than a simple bumper mishap. I think it is still best to look up the CarFax as it gives you the original in service date, which is nice to know, and if the car has had multiple owners, also nice to know...

Inventory

Just started digging into the purchase of a MS and, given the exceptional pricing, I've narrowed my search to the 60 and 85. Major thanks to Hank for his relentless and spectacular work in providing us with an alternative site in helping us select the right MS.

I've talked to a few Tesla reps out of California who have provided me with inventory that is not listed on their pre-owned site. They've quoted me a few other cars in the high $40ks and I've got my eye on a white 85kWh 2013, 32k Miles with 19" wheels, Tan nappa leather, Wood Gloss, Tech package and UH sound for $55k

After reviewing all the comments on this page, I have to say - I'm tempted on holding out for the end of the year. Prices can only go down is the logic. But I can't resist the MS aura that binds us to the car. It slowly pulls me in every time I think of "delaying."

Ideally, I'd love to find me a Blue/Grey 85 with Tech package, Pano, Air suspension under 25k miles for $52k. =D

Those prices are assuming the tax credits on the inventory vehicles or without that credit? Since this varies from state to state knowing the baseline price is most helpful. Inventory cars in the low $50's would be VERY attractive post tax credit,,with warranty etc. not so attractive if u r quoting post credit pricing.

I don't mean to cut in on your edge, but I'd be really curious who these reps are and how to get in touch with them. Based on your description, I'd be very tempted to bite. Unfortunately every car that gets put on the website in the ~$50k price range likely disappears in minutes. It's really challenging to make such a large financial decision in an instant.

No rebates

These quoted prices are for those vehicles where the 7,500 tax incentive no longer applies. Any other individual state incentive I'm not sure about. My understanding - if it is a CPO (pre-owned registered) vehicle - the tax incentive cannot be applied. However, if it is a "pre-owned inventory" (a car that has never been registered) then you can take advantage of the tax incentive.

The cars that have the tax incentive are those loaner/floor model cars.

I'm in the process of selecting a Credit Union for pre-approval. I was going to trade in my E350 but they gave me a pretty low quote. So I'm just going to take a hit, pay a few grand into it and hand it over to a family member.

Because of all the new technology in the Model S - I can't see any other car manufacturer coming close to providing that level of technology. These good old boy's prefer the old model - gradual change. Such that a USB port is considered "new technology" or upgrade on a car. Just silly.

There is some behind the curtains process going on with the inventory. Hank has caught on to some of the hiccups with cars being taken off the pre-owned site yet still available for sale. Seems that Tesla has plenty more inventory out there - for one reason or another - all that inventory is not making it onto the site.

I believe a couple of weeks ago they had a surplus of very low-end S60 Inventory models they needed to unload, so they put them on the CPO site to get more exposure. But from what I've seen, the bulk of "Inventory" cars are 85kWh cars, and a lot of those P85s and P85+s. NONE of those higher-spec'd Inventory cars made it to the CPO website, for reasons I can not guess at this time. But I think we all agree, that Tesla should just put them ALL up on the site, all CPO and Inventory cars. The only reason I suspect they're holding back the CPO inventory is that it just doesn't fit well on their, ahem, inefficiently designed website.

Your site is significantly better Hank. They should put you on their payroll! Interestingly, I am pretty certain they've already benefited from your work. If your site alone resulted in the sale of 15 cars - we are talking about a Million bucks in monetary exchange! Banks, Insurance Companies, States (DMV), Tesla, Owners, all of them gaining some form of financial gain. =D Rain Maker!

The cynic in me tells me it is about saturation - Tesla does not want to leave consumers with a depreciating value impression. "Early adopters see Tesla values plunge! Potentially scaring away new consumers" (Just a thought nothing more). Not sure what is the process for a car to eventually make it onto the site. Whatever is going on - I agree - inventory should be unleashed on the site. All of it.

I was thinking of waiting too, but then an S85 came up in the price range I was looking for, and bam, pulled the trigger within 2 minutes of seeing it on CPO Reports page. Car was only on CPO website for 25 minutes before I took it off! Don't wait. Driving this car is like a dream come true, and I love every minute of it.

Oh come on Smart, at least show us a glimpse of that beauty! What was included? Mileage? Cost? I'm primarily looking at California inventory. I'm not worried about "transportation fees" since I'm thinking of driving out there for pick up and driving it back to Vegas! =D

I'm in the process of getting pre-approved for financing - once that is done I'm pulling the trigger. Either the $47/$49K 60 or the $55k S85. Range anxiety? No range anxiety? Range anxiety? Driving me crazy!

Do your research about buying in California...I'm not sure if it applies only to new cars, but Tesla has to collect CA sales tax for all cars sold in CA even if you live out of state.

Correct - its determined by the point of sale (delivery location.) IIRC Fremont is 9.5%, other CA locations may be 6.0-10.0%. That's even higher than the combined rate for NYS/NYC (8.875.) In theory you get credit for the sales & use tax if you register in another state, but very few places will have a higher S&U tax. And no, you don't get a refund if your state is lower.
