The $54,000 Paperweight (Registration problems)

    I’m the owner of a Model 3 purchased on July 20 from the Las Vegas Tesla dealer. It is everything I thought it would be and I’m more than satisfied. There was a one week delay in the final delivery but I received the car many months sooner than I ever expected. A nice man named Sean handled the delivery and another nice lady by the name of Caroline handled the actual turnover of the car. I signed the paperwork and after Caroline answered a couple questions, I left.

    So why is the car an over-priced paperweight? The temporary registration has expired and no one at Tesla seems to care. I emailed my concerns to Sean on August 15, four days prior to expiration. He answered the first email, said he could check with the service center, but he never called or responded again. I then tried Caroline’s number and sent an email. She returned my call and said she needed a copy of my proof of insurance even though I offered a copy when picking up the car. I sent her the requested picture of the insurance and the next time we talked, one day after the temporary registration expired, she plainly stated a third party was responsible for registering my car and the registration and plates would be mailed to me. She made no offer to try and find out why there was a delay and seemed to imply she was washing her hands of the entire matter.

    This morning, August 24, five days after the registration expired, I checked the Nevada DMV website to see if the Tesla was listed on my registration page, it was not. Prior to lunch, I called the DMV to see if they had a record of the registration and if there might be some kind of delay at their end. The title was ready but they did not receive any request to register the car. The lady at the DMV suggested I should bring in the EDRS to register the car myself. Impossible of course because I do not have this form; or any other documentation that says I own the car.

    I called Tesla and talked to a sales representative. She listened to my story then offered to transfer my call to Caroline. I politely declined then she said she would talk to the manager about my problem and I would receive a prompt reply. After over three hours I called again and talked to a man who also said he also would talk to the manager and he, of course, said I would receive a reply. It didn’t happen.

    So what happens now? It’s obvious the Las Vegas dealer doesn’t care. Do I return the car? Should I contact an attorney? Has anyone else had this issue?

    Phone the service centre and ask to speak to a manager.

    Submit a ticket through the website, and select the escalation option. I received an immediate response (less than 24 hours) to my request.

    I had this same issue a few years ago with a Toyota dealer. I didn't get the paperwork until a full month after my temporary plate expired.

    Paperweight? That's a bit harsh when the issue is not the car itself.

    What should you do? Be patient. Expired or not, you are still over-reacting to a minor problem. Your tags and registration will get to you when Tags, Inc. finishes processing and sends them to you and thousands of other owners.

    you have real problems if you think THIS is a huge problem and suggesting the car should be returned because of it or a "paperweight"

    He can't legally drive his car, through no fault of his own. That's only minor for people who have other forms of transportation. I'd say they should be providing him with a loaner until the issue is solved, personally.

    If you can prove that you paid for your tags when you purchased the car you should be fine If you get pulled over and get ticketed. At least you won’t stay in jail for very long.

    I'm surprised you didn't attempt to visit your delivery center in person. The best way to get anything done is to be right in their face. Phone calls can be blown off easily as you experienced.

    Sorry for the delay and I don't have any excuses for this problem.

    You should have the purchase documents in your Tesla Account webpage:

    Click on "Manage->View Vehicle Details->Motor Vehicle Purchase Agreement

    Hope this works if you print it out, sign and date the "Delivery Declaration" to declare that you got the car and register yourself at your local DMV.

    You already paid DMV fees as shown on "Motor Vehicle Purchase Agreement" and I wonder whether your local DMV will make you pay again when you come in.

    I am in the same situation as yourself and I also took delivery late July in Las Vegas. Caroline was also the person who turned over my car. My temp registration is set to expire on 8/30 and has not received my permanent tags. I called Tesla Las Vegas and got misinformation. I finally got Amy who is the Sr. Delivery Experience Specialist who got with the DMV team and was able to send me an electronic copy of the EDRS. This just happened today and I was able to go to the DMV to get permanent plates. If you need more information send me a PM. I live in the Aliante area.

    Receipt of the paperwork from Tesla was delayed * in my case too, but I was able to extend my temporary registration for $6 by visiting the local Recorder's office. My car lives in Colorado so YMMV

    I started emailing my sales advisor about a month before the temp plate was set to expire and weekly thereafter. 3 .. 2 .. 1 .. and then the paperwork showed up two days before the expiration date but I had extended my temp plates a day earlier.

    You can still drive the car, just don't get pulled over. And if you do get pulled over, show the cop your registration papers and play dumb. I'm good at that.

    I don’t know if I’d try that in Nevada, they are pricks when it comes to stuff like this or insurance.

    Can’t you just go to your county clerk’s office with the paperwork and pay for new plates?

    I am in the same boat. I don’t know why Tesla can’t get simple things, like issuing titles, done.

    In any case; call them and have them get you an updated temp tag. They can do it and they can email it to you to print out.

    While I do get that this would be a pain, and shouldn’t happen, it’s not an insurmountable problem (without taking a helpless approach), that one would typically return a car back to the dealer over.

    Texas also has a temporary plate process, as do other states I have lived in. Perhaps Nevada does too?

    Tesla outsources this stuff. They need to get the company to step it up. It could also be the DMV struggling with higher registration rates.

    Anyway, when I got my S tesla said it would be right at 30 days for the plates. They said call if not in and they would get another temp plate for me. Plates did come on the day the temp expired. Perhaps I was lucky.

    This surprises me, mainly because I've always had such positive experiences with Tesla service. Beyond that, I have no suggestions. They've always responded immediately to any concerns or problems I've had.
