Model 3 Performance/Ludicrous Waiting Room

Mmmm love logging in every day to see how many Cali folks get vins who ordered after me while I sit here VINless. Good times.
I am pretty sure we actually get VINs in CA much closer to actual delivery. For other states, they assign a VIN before it gets on transport, even if delivery to you is at least a week or two out.

So far I know of only one random person in CA who ordered in May and got his car early. It was a SG/white “default” config and he probably got lucky.

I am in CA and a May order with June delivery and still don’t have a VIN.

Reading in the FB group that folks are seeing delivery delays due to another EPA hold.

I bet the EPA doesn’t give this much trouble to ICE manufacturers and delay so much. Such a double standard. Unfortunate that Elon has found a way to piss off both sides of the aisle.

I'm betting it's nothing more than some SCs not being well informed and this is old news. The cars show up with old firmware and they don't know they have to install 2024.14.8 and that it fixes the EPA issue.

Never understood why they don’t at least offer black calipers as an option. Red on a different shade of red just looks silly.
You mean like this?
I had my 22 LR capilers painted black with proper decals. For a black car, looks awesome instead of grey.

I 100% agree that having a mismatched red caliper on an ultra red car seems like an f up. But I’m sure Brembo basically have their ‘Red’ and won’t modify for anyone.

While I’m trying to distract myself from checking for a VIN every five minutes, thought I’d look at how this car stacks up against a bunch of other sub 3 second cars. Probably made some mistakes and also missing stuff, but this should be fun. Fuzzy math showing cost per second divided base by 0-60 times for funsies.

Awesome job creating this list for us! Confirms what I think we all suspected, which is that the new M3P is by FAR the best value for money of basically any production (or even non-production) vehicle on the road today.

One thing to keep in mind here though: the CPS metric is a little bit flawed. The M3P at $52K is $18K CPS, while the Dodge is $96K and $58K CPS. But the Dodge is almost twice as fast, so dividing its 0-60 time by its price tag leads to a high CPS. If the Dodge did 2.9s like the M3P did, its CPS would drop to $33K. If the Plaid was 2.9 sec like the M3P, its CPS would drop to $30K.

Obviously, most of these cars are so stupid expensive compared to the M3P that it doesn't really matter, but it's worth noting that this CPS metric isn't really capturing what I think it was intended to capture, because a lower 0-60, which would increase CPS, is actually indicative of higher value for money.

Seems like EDDs are updating for a lot of people weekly based on when they ordered. I ordered on a Friday so I'm hopeful I see some update tomorrow. Last Friday I went from 5/22-6/8, to 7/8-8/12, so I'm hopeful if it does move that it doesn't get worse...

Agreed, I didn't think red ever qualified regardless of interior.
It qualified on the first two days because the base price when the performance was announced was $52,999. Choosing red bought it up to $54,999 which is under the $55,000 limit for the federal $7,500 rebate. After two days or so, because too many people were ordering the red, they raised the price to $53,999 which disqualified the red color. Then they raised it again to $54,999 to put all the other colors out except for the grey. To compensate they lowered the white interior to free instead of $1500.

Damn lucky haha we were just complaining about how long it’s taking. Seems to come so randomly. Remind me, what was your EDD timeline?

Did you wake up to it? Or get texted this morning?
May 26th - June 30th, May 17 - May 31st, May 25th - June 8th, June 3rd - June 30th, then woke up and checked the app to see the VIN. Got a text couple hours later at 7am.

eah I thought about a formula to benchmark the delta between M3P 0-60 and cost with other brands - I did use disclaimer that it was “fuzzy” math (and I’m no statistician for sure LOL)

Yeah it's odd. I'll try to throw test tones through it and figure things out. The midbass in the doors feels pretty good and strong but you can feel very clearly how the door isn't well dampened.

Also, low frequencies are non directional, but only in a concrete bunker. Most rooms (and ESPECIALLY cars, which is one of the many reasons I despise car audio) have vibrations, or floor energy transfer that gives away the location of the subs pretty easily especially above 60hz or so.

The bright side (pun intended) is that the system overall sounds pretty good. It's not bright or harsh at all and is pretty open sounding (I turned off the ambience thing but will play with it and revisit it tomorrow).

The trouble is, most people have never heard a properly set up stereo system, so as much as I can provide advice on tuning of the system etc -- it doesn't necessarily mean people will think it sounds good because I'm battling against a possible lifetime of thinking "improper" sound is good.
I think some of it might come down to personal taste and also how people physically hear sound. I'm no audiophile, and to my ear, even when I know it's more "proper" or higher quality sound, it sometimes just doesn't sound as good to me. Intellectually I know it's better sound, and in some cases I can tell it's better, and I try to like it, but it doesn't excite me as much, or seems lackluster compared to the blown-out, high-immersion sound my ear seems to prefer.

And I officially got pushed today.

EDD went from May 29 - June 7 to June 22 - June 30.

Right into my vacation plans. No M3P till I get back after July 4th. Someone else will likely get my black/black vin. So frustrating.

If you dont have a vin, you are still making the same mistake of believing and making plans around the "estimated" delivery date.

I was looking for something to take the edge off the VIN OCD. I started digging into the 2024 M3 parts catalog and found a few tidbits. The 19 inch wheels are actually listed there. The front is 8.5x19 ET34. The rear is 10x19 ET45. The aero covers are different obviously, and their mountings are different. The spokes on the 19's appear to be thicker. I wonder if the 19's are cast rather than forged? I was pleasantly surprised that the weight of the 20's was as low as the UPP guys said. The front and rear rotors are the same as the 23 M3P. I'm still not a fan of the low aspect ratio 20 inch tires for an everyday driver on the roads I drive on. I will probably be looking for 19's or even 18's.

Our vacation plans were made long ago, well before the M3P was announced.

But I have never ordered a Tesla so I didn’t realize they were so strict about delivery windows. They should give at least a 10 day window when they keep delaying their EDDs.
