Superchargers in Northern California (location speculation)

My guess for "South San Jose" would be at "The Plant" which is in South San Jose .

that would be so appropriate.

"the Plant" is a reference to the way back in time IBM Plant in South San Jose. This was pre Silicon Valley days.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. But I don't think anything was ever manufactured there... Mostly R&D... There were a lot of buildings. But that was back in the day when companies gave people offices, not cubicle, not desks, and not 1/2 desks! A friend of mine just got a job and has to share a desk, that's way too crowded for me.

"the Plant" is a reference to the way back in time IBM Plant in South San Jose. This was pre Silicon Valley days.

Yeah, them were the days. Them were the days when apricot, nectarine, cherry, and plum orchards were ubiquitous. Truck farms were on small parcels selling really great produce.

The enticing aroma of the Del Monte cannery on Auzerais would waft on the zephyr off the Bay. Sometimes fruit cocktail, sometimes pickles. It did not matter. Summers in San Jose!

My uncle used to work for Piazza Paving that was on Downer Rd. That company in concert with developers helped pave over all those orchards in the '60s.

According to Google Maps South San Jose is a huge area and actually has three Targets. One is the Target at The Plant. Another is the Target on Cottle Rd. The third is the Target at Oakridge Mall. I could make an argument for all three with Oakridge Mall being the least likely because of the proximity to the new Cherry Ave (Almaden) Supercharger.

I kind of like the idea of Target Cottle Rd because of the proximity to 101 and 85. There is also all the new high density housing that is going up in that area, which screams to me no opportunities for residents to home charge.

It will be interesting to see where the next Superchargers will be built in San Jose. The city could easily accommodate six different Superchargers that would stay busy.

A Cottle Road location would be interesting. And like your reasoning about near 101 and 85 for easy access from either major highway. It's not that far away from Almaden Shopping Center and the Cherry Avenue Superchargers though. It would help split some of the road from the Cherry Avenue location I guess, which I do think will be very busy.

We dine there occasionally and there are a number of food establishments there too. Of course a Starbucks. Safeway at one end and Target at the other. As you mentioned there is a ton of new dense housing going up there as upper scale apartments. Lowes down the street from there too. When we are up there in the future will definitely keep an eye out in the parking lot area around there. The parking lot area around Lowes is massive but at least now no real food or bathroom options immediately near by.

I was thinking about Target by Oakridge and really doubt that one. As it is during the holidays there is no where to park as it is at times and you just circle looking for regular parking.

Was looking at the Tesla Supercharger map again. While the location by Cottle (85 and 101) would be nice (for us) I noticed the Plant one is kind of close to Almaden Plaza/Cherry and Rt 87 too. So my thought is now thinking more east of these and closer to 101. There really is no Supercharger location off 101 north of Gilroy until you get to Mountain View, quite a distance up the peninsula. So my best guess now would be something that is accessible from 101 (heavily traveled north and south) and still near Monterey Road (also heavily traveled alternate back route). Tesla describes the future location as in South San Jose so I'm thinking more like 101/85/Monterey Road area maybe around Bernal. There a shopping center on Bernal near 101 and Monterey with a Starbuck and other shopping and some food and grocery.

However, the only other location in that area and maybe better suited that I think could offer easy on and off access north and south on 101, be close to 85 and Monterey Road, would be the new development area off 101 at Blossom Hill/Silver Creek Valley Road. There's a new Starbucks open right off 101 on the east side (101 and Silver Creek--5805 Silver Creek Valley Place). High tech office park right down the road, lots of housing on the Blossom Hill side of 101 and the whole Silver Creek Country club housing up the hill to the east on Silver Creek Valley Road. With Starbucks there already there would be utilities to the area and still plenty of land to develop a Supercharger location on. In fact being on the east side of 101 if they went with solar panels there they would get plenty of sun from the west to charge. I'm sure other shops and eateries will go in there shortly. Really great visibility from 101 north or south. It's location is right at 101 where a Cottle or Bernal location would be a bit off the highway. I think Tesla has shown that it likes to be fairly close to major highways so people don't have far to exit off. The area falls in the South San Jose area of Google's map when you search for South San Jose so definitely could be a contender. Cottle Road has on and off exit ramps for 85. Here's the location on the map. What do you think?

Cottle road target is an easy trip off 101 on blossom hill exit. Also, the power grid in that area is particularly robust due to some of the industrial activities in the area. Guess we’ll see...

I've been checking for permits on that Target location for a while, although from my experience there the parking can be pretty bad.

Another nearby location I thought was possible is the Lucky's that's on Bernal Rd. Access from 85 and 101 is good, there's normally lots of parking, and they already have some Chademo/CCS chargers there. Food and starbucks nearby.

I have a good news / bad news update / non-update on the theoretical Marin City / Sausalito supercharger. Marin County changed the format of their permit database so that it doesn't truncate the description of the permit so what was "E V Charging Statio" is now "E V Charging Stations, Cabinets, Etc. Tesla". The bad news is that the permit application was received on 3/1/2018 and it hasn't been issued. The county wouldn't take this long to issue a permit, so the delay (or cancellation) is probably from Tesla. Perhaps the Corte Madera site is replacing this one as far as Tesla is concerned.

It's still live and in planning review. Most recent activity was in November 2018. It's to install 12 urban-style supercharger stations (with potential future expansion of 4 additional stations) at the Marin Gateway Shopping Center (190 Donahue St.). It looks like the long hold up might be that the project was to install 18 EVCS, but they may have had to reduce the number and resubmit due to the center already being under the generally required number of parking stations.

There's a Target there, so that's likely the host business.

I think the Tesla.com/findus page has been updated. Everything just says Opening in 2019, but there may be some new points. Was there always a future San Rafael Supercharger? Vallejo? Walnut Creek? Hayward? Half Moon Bay? Woodside?

Also just noticed, but may have not cared before, was there always a future charger in South San Francisco? San Mateo? Los Altos? Mt. View II? Santa Clara? San Jose III? Santa Cruz? Watsonville?

There are LOTS of future Superchargers on the map. I still haven't visited all the Bay Area ones as it stands. It may be like movies soon, they make them faster than you can see them. You can never visit them all.

On a sad note, I no longer see any Superchargers to connect California to Mexico, but that's not a NorCal problem

Here's a post from October 5th that shows what sites had been on the map with 2018 target dates (if a site you're curious about was already listed as 2019, then it wouldn't be on this list even if it was already on Tesla's map unless we already knew the exact location from permit filings). It classes them by the amount of information we already have about the site as well as whether Tesla gave more information than just "2018" or not:
Here is an update on the status of the North American "Coming Soon" superchargers targeted to open in 2018. 6 sites opened in the U.S. and Canada in the last month. Now that we are in the 4th quarter of the year, the pace of new permitting and construction is starting to accelerate. Below is a list of the sites that came online and the 97 sites for which we have information or at least rumors on their location. Sites with confirmed locations are shown at supercharge.info; details on all sites is available at the Supercharger Progress wiki.

A lot of the one's you mentioned have been coming soon for a very long time. e.g. Half Moon Bay and Vallejo. Mid and late 2017 a ton of new proposed sites were added.

You may be able to check archive.org to see if they cached the page.

Walnut Creek and Hayward have also been “coming soon” for awhile, I recall casually looking around for permit information on those.

Bruce.
