$4400 for repairs - Advice Needed

What should I do?

  • Pay deductible and get it fixed

    Votes: 2 11.1%

Hi, took my car to Tesla collision center and they quoted $4400 in body paint repairs for the following damage. Good news is insurance will cover it since the claim falls under comprehensive and I have a low deductible but I’m scared my insurance still might go up after. What do you think?
Is it worth to go ahead with the repairs or just suck it up and keep driving since these damages are inevitable (most of my driving is on the freeway). I’m most concerned about the resale value of my car when I do sell it one day. How much do you think these damages will affect my sale price? I love the car and plan on driving it till I feasibly can.

Howto: Reduce the Tesla Wall Connector Light brightness

Ok so as im preparing to get delivery of my M3H i was getting a bit antsy about how bright the LEDs are on the front of the Wall Connector.
As my WC is near my driveway facing towards the house i didn't like how it lit up the front of the house and created a glow thru the windows. It looked like the opera house on New Years Eve!
I searched around looking for how the lights could be dimmed in the software (they cant as of this writing) and other methods such as disconnecting the lights altogether.

I still wanted to have the lights to show me whats going on, i just didnt want them so bright. Also, to remove the cable for the lights you have to get into the waterproof section of the WC, something id like to avoid. I didnt want to just stick tape on the outside either.

Ok, So it turned out to be kinda simple, but as these things can be daunting, here is my step by step guide.

Things you will need:

  • Some tape
  • Some star torx bits and driver (see photos)
  • A blanket.
  • A pot plant.
  • Some patience.

1. Isolate the power. Either turn off the circuit breaker and tag it out so no one turns it back on, or isolate via the isolator near the WC. Ensure the WC is off!

2. Using one of these star screw bits, undo and take out the 4 screws holding the WC to the base. They are on the top and bottom on each corner. Put them somewhere safe and dont let them roll away under the car like me.

IMG_8579.jpg

3. Pull the whole WC forward and it will disconnect from the base. While i was working out what to do next i put it face down on the coiled up cable. In this photo im pointing at the next screws you need for step 4 (yes, its my finger!).

IMG_8568.jpg

4. Moving somewhere else where i had a towel and the neighbors were not giving me sass i used this weird looking allen key that i found in a nearby pot plant to undo those two screws down the bottom. My normal driver thing couldn't reach into those deep holes so you might need something similar. The screws have a smaller head than the other 4 you just took out. weird how that allen key had not rusted or anything, but whatever.

IMG_8570.jpg

5. Undo the 2 screws, and be careful to not drop them on the floor and roll under the workbench like i did. I did find them eventually but there was also a big redback spider under there that could have killed me, making this whole project moot. It didnt kill me so i got the screws back and kept going.
Push the front plate down, and it will come off.
In this photo the base bit is upside down which might be confusing, but i took the photo so im including it. You can see the slit that the light goes thru.

IMG_8571.jpg

6. Ok, time to get creative. I googled for a while what colours mixed with other colours make what colour. Ideally i wanted the light to stay green, but i didnt have any white tape. Plus it turns out there other colours LEDs so it all got a bit confusing. In the end it came down to the only tape i could find, which was blue so i had wasted a fair bit of time. And i got sidetracked answering messages and playing with the dog. Bam, tape stuck on like a pro.

IMG_8573.jpg

6.5 This is what the guts looks like. You can see the ribbon cable you could remove but if you haven't picked up by now - i aint going there..

IMG_8572.jpg

7. Ok so i wont tell you how to suck eggs putting this back together but the thing to remember is to line up the face plate and gently push up so these clips engage.

IMG_8574.jpg

what are we up to? ohh

8. Slide the plate back on, put the screws back in using the weird allen key (i had dropped a screw putting it in and i stepped on it too which i dont recommend) and put the allen key back in the pot plant. The whole shebang can then be chucked back on the mount. You have to kinda lean on it a bit to get those 4 screws back in. I reakon thats so that the weather proof seal makes good contact.

9. Flick the power back on and bobs your aunty.. The lights are now dimmed and you didn't die from a spider or electrocution = win! Go make a cup of tea.

Bye bye Tesla

Winter Charging in Rochester, NY ?

So, I get this email from Tesbros about how to care for Teslas in the winter. One of their "tips" is to keep it constantly plugged in so the battery stays warm and some of the tips refer to cars which are parked outdoors. So I'm thinkin that's really their target audience with this email.

I'm inclined to ignore the "keep it plugged in all the time" advice because I keep my MYLR in our garage, and winter temps here rarely dip below 25-30 degrees F. And as a new Tesla owner (3 months in), I'm hesitant to vary from the 20/80 charging rule.

Opinions/advice please!

TIA, Richard

Model S from US (now in Ukraine) does not start

The MODEL S P85D 2014/12 (Intel) car was bought in the USA, came to me after 6 months of idleness and does not run. The first thing I did was replace the bad ground contacts under the front hood, and check if there is any antifreeze in the rear engine. The 12v battery charger shows 100% vital activity. I am attaching a photo of the errors. It is important to say that the pneumo is not working, the antifreeze pumps are also not working. The car is from NEW Jersey, so there are many traces of corrosion and oxidation. Please help, what to do next.

Front windows dancing up and down. WTF? Video inside

I came to my wife's car to find the passenger window down. I tried to move it up and it was working intermittently. Sometimes the switch would work sometimes it wouldn't. I got out to film it and the driver's side started happening as well. I did a brake plus two buttons reset. I could hear the actuators clicking on and off in the windows. For example when it was down I could hear it try to put it down more. No idea what's going on. I put in a service ticket but I'm in the middle of nowhere in NH. Anyone have any ideas? I can't use this car like this in NH. Also my wife often keeps our dog in the car while she's out running or skiing.

Thoughts on not choosing acceleration boost on M3LR

After mulling a couple of months on this silly and almost entirely inconsequential choice, I've gone with no boost because you cannot go back to standard drive mode (other than the one off/refund method). If the boosted "upgrade" allowed 3 drive modes, chill/standard/sport, then I'd go ahead.

A couple of small issues with boost: it makes the drive more front wheel bias. And boost is exciting but you don't always want a fully strung drive, and chill mode is a little slow.

Price Adjustment vs FUSC

I need your help making a decision.

To sum it up, I "picked up" my new car on Jan 13th and noticed some small issues, including a paint problem on the inside of the door. They gave me two options: either reschedule for them to fix everything or take the car now and schedule a service later. Both options involve going to the body shop for the paint issue. I chose to have them fix the car first and then pick it up because I believe they'll take better care of it before selling.

Today, the car is back to the service center and it's ready for me to pick up this Sat, they offered a $4859 price adjustment on the total down payment. The reason for this discount is that the car had damage and went through a third party for repairs. I'm happy about the discount, but I realized they removed my Free Unlimited Supercharging Transfer (FUSC). When I asked, they said FUSC can't overlap with the price adjustment, which I confirmed in the FAQs.

I tried talking to them to get both benefits (lol), but they insisted I could only choose one. Do you think this is legitimate?

My question is, if I can only choose one, which one should I go with? I plan to own the car for 6 years or within 65k miles, and I have 3 supercharging stations nearby. I usually use supercharging once a week and never paid for it before due to FUSC on my old car. Can you provide some advice and share your thoughts? Thank you in advance.

Drive unit replacement under warranty yet costing $5k

A few weeks ago the 2016 P90D got a power reduced error with the turtle icon. Tesla SC decided it would need a new drive unit. Lo and behold while the RDU is covered but it seems somehow they think those wire harness need replacements as well that ending up with a quote of $5,400 CAD. Is it a normal Tesla thing or the SC is not being reasonable?

What company car fuel card does everyone use (AllStar doesn’t have access to Tesla SC)?

Hi all - I am picking up my Tesla Model 3 Highland next week (ordered through employer).

I have been issued an AllStar electric fuel card by my employer.

I have just looked into the charger map (Zapp) this gives access to and it doesn't include Tesla Superchargers (which is annoying).

Does anyone know of any fuel cards that provides access to the Superchargers?

I left my lights in overnight

Cool move, not too proud of it.

Do the lights draw power from the 12v battery or the main battery?
As a precaution & assuming that if it was the 12v battery (and harkening back to the olden days of alternators charging batteries), I did some highway driving with no heat etc. for about 30 min. hoping to make up for some or all of whatever charge was lost.

Am i now safe, battery wise?

TIA - Richard
