Tesla Model 3 Roof Rack – J-Bolt securing the rack snapped

Thanks for the update. I will sit tight for now, mine shipped in Dec and no reason for me to think that the J-bolts are not fine but it still feels like Yakima should be providing replacements for all considering the relatively low cost.

Installing the official Tesla model 3 roof rack

I am not disagreeing with your take but I can't imagine they will not offer replacements to everyone. What you say makes sense but given the low cost of a replacement, the added functionality of the longer clips and mostly the peace of mind from making sure (because if they are wrong the...

Installing the official Tesla model 3 roof rack

I am confused. I am a rack owner. It seems we have identified that the clips are clearly at fault and that the rest of the rack appears to be fine. Also, it seems that Yakima, a very experienced rack seller, is producing the racks and clips. Even though it wasn't the quickest response, given...

Tesla Model 3 Roof Rack – J-Bolt securing the rack snapped

I just left my stickers on. Sure, I have a few bubbles in mine and you notice it if you are looking but it's not so bad. But yes, it would be nice to have a replacement sticker lined up if I need it.

I also checked my install video (detail starting about 2:25 of the video) and I have the J-hooks without the notch. I received the rack on Dec 30/31. The rack is off right now but I plan to put it on later this week/weekend. I will certainly be paying more attention to installation this time...

Installing the official Tesla model 3 roof rack

I got mine at the end of 2018 (Dec 31 I think) so not the first batch but an earlier batch compared to the more recent Feb shipments. I have had the rack off for a month now but I will be carefully inspecting the clips when I re-install and this concern may keep me from using it at all. It...

Traffic Aware Cruise Control (TACC) should be standard free of cost - Let's vote and make Elon Hear

But everyone should understand that if Tesla ever "enables it for free" on all cars than those that paid $5K for it will demand refunds. Tesla has already set a very bad precedent with refunds on the performance package and this would be a much more compelling case for refund. That could have...

Installing the official Tesla model 3 roof rack

Given the importance of this item and the relative small cost and size, Tesla should been able to make a very strong replacement J-clip (Grade 8? stainless steel?) and ship out replacements for maybe five dollars per rack. Given the $450 price tag, that certainly seems doable.

    TeslaCam Instructions and Observations

That has not been my experience but I have not gone back to test it. Usually if I am driving and something happens, it hit the record button within 5 or 10 seconds of the event then I keep driving. My files are fine and have not been corrupted. But maybe something has changed recently.

Installing the official Tesla model 3 roof rack

There are only four clips, they are relatively small and simple. It should be easy to make a rock solid clip. Not sure what's going on here. I didn't have any problem with mine but I am going to re-examine my clips for any signs of problems. I didn't seem like the metal was substandard in...

    Model 3 Roof Rack Options

I get some minimal amount of wind "whooshing" but that is to be expected with a rack, especially with a glass roof. Nothing I can't live with and I am generally happy with the overall amount of "wind turbulence" noise. I also am getting some periodic whistling and that is bothering me more...

Yes, that is concerning. I did mine just by hand tightening but metal clips breaking is not good at all. Surprising since the nuts and other hardware seem to be high qualify pieces. I took my rack off for a few weeks but with any luck, might be re-installing it this weekend.

Installing the official Tesla model 3 roof rack

Agreed. On the other hand, there are some really nice touches that I should mention. 1. The locks are internal, not ugly and not exposed to the elements. Makes for a very sleek, "factory" look and no bars that extend beyond the connection points. 2. The cross bars, wing nuts and other pieces...

To be honest I had not seen the picture above showing the metal clip and it is barely mentioned in the install guide. So I was not clear how it was designed exactly. I feel these Tesla should have done a better job illustrating this clip in the install guide. If not, I hope that the clip is...

Full Self Driving Price - $4K upgrade no longer honored?

When they make the hardware upgrade available, I will probably purchase the FSD option. And yes, I am fully expecting Tesla to honor the $4K price. I purchased my Model 3 with the option of (a) buying FSD for $3k at delivery, or (b) buying FSD after delivery for $4k. I intend to exercise...

    Console Wrap Experiences

I have no experience with the Xpel. I had no install problems with the Kenriko carbon fiber. It was easier (and I had to be less exact) than I expected. However, it's possible that the carbon fiber is easier to work with. It was thicker than I was expecting so it seemed easy to work with and...

    Mods on my 3

No, they just stay on. You only have to remove the center cap to put the Aeros on. Most people use a suction cup for that. I have a suction cup but I prefer a different (less elegant) method. First, I drilled a small hole in each of the caps just above the "T" - it's small and only...

Ride Quality of Model 3 Perf w/ 20s vs. LR RWD on 18s?

FWIW, I just had a Model X P90 for 6 days (ride height set to Low) while my Model 3 was in the shop and I feel that neither was "better" than the other, just different. The Model X is much heavier and doesn't get jolted as much by bumps, some of which is probably just that it's a much heavier...

Weathertech vs Tesla. Who has compared Model 3 cargo mats?

It's possible and I don't have the frunk mat so take that FWIW, but isn't it a pretty small mat? $70 already seems decently pricey for basically a luggage sized rubber mat. The rear one at $130 I can understand because that's a much larger piece. Just an observation.

Weathertech vs Tesla. Who has compared Model 3 cargo mats?

By the way, I think you have that wrong. By your links (and my understanding), it's the Tesla frunk mat that is cheaper. So you would be paying more for WeatherTech.

    Another Roof Tinting Question

Quick Poll, How many RWD owners would have waited for the AWD/

I think one "problem" is that there was no hint of specs or really cost. All we had was "about 6 months or so and less than $5K." In my case, I thought AWD would probably shave .3 seconds and would be $5K. Had I known it would be .6 seconds and $4k (at one point), I might have waited. That...

    Another Roof Tinting Question

I had mine done at TintWorld in Cary. Originally I went to TVP Auto and I think they do good work but they are being cautious about doing full, one piece tints on the rear window so I went to TintWorld. I've had it for about a month and no problems at all. As I mentioned, I initially...

    What about the tow hitch?

Not saying this is the reason but sometimes it's because of things like the Model 3 is more of a "normal" mass market car while the S is more of a luxury item and sometimes utilitarian things like tow hitches would be aimed at the mass market. Of course the X is hardly mass market but that's an...

FWIW, I haven't had the 4S Tires but I did have the A/S 3+ on my last car (BMW 328i) and found them to be a huge improvement. They were my favorite set of tires so far so I am sure the 4S are outstanding.

    Secret word for configuring Homelink?

Good post. One of my two openers worked right away. The other one didn't (they are the same brand and age). It was only days later that I got the second one to register by kneeling down and holding it relatively close towards the bumper. I can't explain why one worked standing, relatively...

Not getting paint protection film for your Model 3?

I was not intending to do PPF but after a road trip with a minor rock chip near the headlight and tons of bugs planted on the front bumper, I reluctantly changed my mind and put Suntek full hood, front bumper, mirrors and headlights. For now, I am holding off on ceramic coating since I put...

I went 40% ceramic on the sides and 70% ceramic on the back glass. Another Roof Tinting Question

Correct, the whole rear glass, one sheet, 70% ceramic (did 40% ceramic on the side windows). Nothing on the glass over the driver. I can always decide to do that later if I am seeing a big heat difference. I will get some pics up, just got it back last night.
