Wiki Model S Delivery Update

Just an FYI - For anyone that was curious.

A little long but what else do I have to do except write on a Tesla forum to strangers:)

Waiting for my Model S for about 9 months, no rush hoping they have a real wheel option before I get it. Drove my friends plaid several times, not a hater, just like a wheel for tight spaces. A little background, I'm 50, I have a 2018 M3LR and a 2020 MYLR. Past - 3 Toyota Landruisers, Lexus Rx, Mercedes 300E, Genesis, VW SUV, 2 - Porsche 911's, Driven my dads BMW 440 many times.

The BMW IX M50 SUV is very comfortable. The seats are great. The visibility is very good. There are a few cool features. The roof is very cool how you can hit a button and fog it. The proclaimed self healing scratch front grill (if it works). The screen is very nice, but almost too much going on. The parking system with all of the views and the back up images are amazing!! I went over some train tracks and it took them very well. Quiet cabin, but loud motors, which I will revist later. The back of the car is extremely ugly. If it didn't have a BMW badge is looks like a Mitsubishi trick from the 90's. I don't get that. The front is okay, but the regular BMW X is much better looking.

So if your looking for a BMW truck basically, this is for you with one caveat. It doesn't drive like a BMW truck. No where close to a gas X5

The drive, experience, etc

The forward / reverse etc was very easy to use and driver friendly. The front of the SUV feels very loose. Like a Ford Explorer I would rent to go skiing from like 5 years ago. The car actually felt like it was floating. I couldn't understand the set up. The accelerator (gas pedal) and brake driving, I felt like I was taking out my flip phone. I had this didn't we move on from this driving? It felt very old and dated. When you step on the accelerator (gas pedal), it moves, but at the same time feels like it is struggling to get the power. Then the engine was kind of loud on top of it. Maybe it's not enough power for the weight. It is no where the same feeling as my M3LR or MYLR. Besides the cushion suspension, it is not a great experience. You do not have that Tesla excitement when you step on the pedal and that whoosh feeling. The one pedal driving is a much better experience(IMO). With the Tesla, you almost feel like you are vacuumed to the road, here I felt I was ready to dock my boat at a restaurant.

If I were to sum up the experience.

Beautiful truck inside and great space. Outside is objectional but I think it's a big miss. BMW makes good looking cars/suv's, I don't get this boxy look.
Also, to me BMW is known for handling, and here it is awful.

Here is "my bottom line opinion" of the IX -Tesla comparision.

The BMW IX feels like a regular gas powered SUV but they put an underpowered electric engine in it.

The Tesla is an entirely different experience. It was built as an electric car and feels futuristic.

I would bet, if you put someone in this BMW suv that never drove a Tesla and didn't tell them it was electric, they would never know it was electric.

Where as if they drove the Tesla they would be blown away by how it drives.

Additional information.

They want $10,000 Premium Service Fee over sticker for the car. A loaded IXM50 all in with tax was $112k (with the Premium Fee of course:) and the lease was $4500 down $2000 per month!!! 3yrs/12k miles per

Confirmed!

I am in the same boat. Just got my VIN. 476. Given the lack of VINS over the past month on this board and the recent spike in VINS I do believe there was some type of delay at the factory to ship these out. I called Tesla and they said mine is in transport right now. I can't imagine it would be a reject from another location and then they ship it to Kansas City. I am speculating that it is just been sitting at the Fremont factory for some unknown reason.

I have seen some shady stuff on this site though and understand your paise. I have seen some VINs from 6 months old get assigned to owners on here. Shady....

I am disappointed that I will not get the till screen but with that being said we will still get the new headlights and tail lights. I am okay with this and do not want to reject this VIN as the wait has been brutal.

You are allowed two VIN rejections provided you did not do a hold after VIN.

Talk with your SA, perhaps there is a way to have your tilting screen and car too.

Very important part of the story that I left out. They also had an I4 Car, but it wouldn't drive because it had a software update they couldn't figure out how to update. I asked if they could do it over the air and they said they could not and were waiting for someone to do it manually. Not a good sign for many reasons.

Although I would love the distinction of being the first TMCer to reject a VIN for the tilt screen, I think I will pass.😂
You won’t miss it most likely. It’s cool and has its benefits but if the screen never tilted in the first place was anyone really looking for that feature?

I went to the Tesla store today to see if there is any status update on my order. The employee had no idea what I was asking and he went to the manager to tell him that I asked about a Tesla. The manager said; "you can go to the Tesla website and look at inventory", I said, "I ordered my car in March, and I am just checking on the status." He said we don't do that; you can check on cars on the internet, Tesla makes cars in batches and we don't know anything.
I started to tell him some people ordered their car a week or so ago and got it this week, but then realized he wouldn't comprehend the point. I remember when I bought my first Mercedes and Lexus where the salespeople were seasoned sales professionals making really great money working at Luxury car dealerships. The whole industry now is just uninformed, poorly paid, people. It's not just Tesla, it is ALL the luxury car brands. You get the same people walking into a low-cost car as you get walking into a high-end dealer. This is just so frustrating.

It is, but after walking into a BMW dealer yesterday to check out an IX and watch the seasoned professional commission salesman play the game, I felt dirty like I needed a shower.

I accepted my pre-refresh car from Kansas City back on March 2nd, rather than reject it and hope for another with the new lights. I feared I'd be waiting months longer to get my car if I rejected the first one, and I honestly don't have any regrets whatsoever. It would be ok to have the updated lights and tilt screen, but I haven't missed those things at all as I've been enjoying my MSLR these past 2.5 months!

Glad you're finally going to be getting your car!

Thanks @Rikster

You were the first member that I thought of when I didn't get the tilt screen your words of wisdom at the time you decided to keep your VIN without the updates.

Totally agree with you. Take it when you can as I do not want to enter back into the waiting game.

Glad to hear you are enjoying yours!!!

How was the delivery experience in KC?

So, anyone know if it's possible to transfer a reservation? I know they generally don't want to do that but is it possible or no?
“Transfers” were never possible. Has to stay in your account. You update registration, insurance, license, trade info on the order of the buyers name. Tesla is watching out for this now and order will likely disappear if you do it.

I got my MS in Dec 21. No tilt screen, however all of the hardware to enable the tilting feature is present in the car, with the exception of the electric motors. I suspect those were in short supply at the time of building my and your cars. I expect Tesla will offer a retrofit on refreshed MSs that currently do not tilt. Tesla has always been good about retrofits, IMO. They offered to replace all cameras for free on my 2017 MS75D so as to enable all features within FSD.
