I just got a call from Tesla to let me know today is the last day to order for September delivery. I was told I was one of the last two reservation holders that haven’t placed the order and the next delivery will be December.

Only two reservation holders haven't placed orders? I'm going to call BS. I'm sure there are a fair number holding out in hope of the return of the LR RWD, and others waiting for full details of the towing option. My guess is that they're under the hammer to try to get orders in to meet this quarter's sales numbers (since the quarter finishes end of September).

And in any case - you should wait until you're satisfied that everything you need/want in the car can be met. December is plausible for the next lot of deliveries (being the end of the fourth quarter), but even so.

So Since you are one of the last 2 and I am a reservation holder who has not put an order in yet, I must be the second of those last 2. I want LR RWD, if they say I can get one, I will put my order in as soon as they confirm that availability.

Tesla does this stuff all the time. When I was looking at an S, the salesperson literally hounded me for weeks with more and more discounts or special once in a lifetime offers.

They are run by numbers, which really gives me faith conversely that they will bust their humps to deliver every possible car they can by the end of this quarter.

My only contacts have been the texts inviting me to order and the text asking if I wanted finance. No delivery specialist yet.

Are you using finance, and if so, have you heard from them yet?

I’m keen to hear from someone about trade in arrangements too. If they can’t give me something reasonable for a car I’ve decided to trade on this, I won’t go ahead, so would be nice to get that sorted out now rather than wait for nothing...

I will answer this one. For finance you may as well be proactive otherwise it will take them forever to get in touch with you. I spoke with macquarie and got approved pretty quickly. Pepper is a bit more slack and they do a phone application process I think. Either way I think they have nearly identical terms.

As far as your trade-in, Tesla will shop your car around with wholesalers and give you an offer. In order to get a trade-in quote, give them a call and they will send you an email with some requirements. Things like photos of each side of the car, the mileage, condition, features etc. I guarantee you, you will make more privately because they just shop places like pickles, mannheim etc. The auction places always pay wholesale prices. It all boils down to whether you want to take the time to sell privately. Another option is if you have a dealer who sells on consignment for you. This works well if it is a second car / you have access to a an alternate vehicle to drive while they sell it for you.

I’m not using their finance. I’ll be trading in my current car. I did test drive a Model S a few months ago. I asked about the trade-in process. They said that they get you to send the details of the car and some photos or bring it in and they offer whatever the local dealers are offering. Sounded like they don’t actually resell the cars themselves, just hand them to local wholesalers.

You can check on sites like Drive or Carsales to get an idea what sort of numbers you will be offered.

You will not be offered anywhere near the prices on carsales for a trade-in. If you want carsales prices, you need to sell it yourself on carsales. The wholesalers will be substantially less.

With my 2nd model s I received a call from tesla at 10.45pm on a saturday night, recommending I order in the next 5 minutes. He said I can always cancel tomorrow if the 10k price rise doesn’t happen. I ordered. 30 minutes later the price jumped 10k. Very gratefull for the honesty. Treat them like a normal car salesperson at your peril.

You are quite right. I didn’t express myself very clearly. The sites come up with a private sale and a wholesale price - they have a pretty solid gap as you say.

If you want to see what they will give you for a trade in, just use this:
Australia Trade-in Self Inspection Form
Upload photos and a description of your car condition. I got a trade in quote less than 24 hours after submitting this form. Not a great price (it’s a trade in, so what do you expect), but i consider it a backstop if i need it as they have said that they will honour the price they offered until my Tesla Model 3 is delivered (as long as I don’t wreck the trade in in the meantime!).

Yeah I know wholesale / trade-in prices are nothing like private, but private is a hassle I don't have time for at the moment. Tbh the more I think about it the more I think I'll just keep it, or perhaps get a specialist to sell it on consignment.
I don’t know your car, but if the wholesale trade-in is say 40k and the carsales price is $60k, put it on carsales for $50k and your hassle will last one inspection, and you’ll end up better off than the wholesale price. Private sales are only a hassle and time consuming if you are asking too much.

Meanwhile model s & x owners, especially the early adopters, are leaning back gleafully acknowledging your pain.

Yep, we all made the same posts back in 2014/15 "I ordered and now I can't stop checking my emails / the website! Im like a child again!!"
It's a pleasant yet painful feeling.
Now I'm waiting for the Roadster. And waiting and waiting...
Might just cough up for a Raven first.
