Quick update: my MS just arrived in Tilburg (Netherlands). Will get assembled, tested and then sent my way. No effect on estimated delivery date: still end of Feb-March. Cannot wait!

So why is it taking them so long to produce the S model? I thought these would be rolling out regularly.

I think second answer is correct. You may get more info by reaching out to your DS. Crossing fingers for a quick delivery for you.
Even established companies, like BMW, Porsche, and Mercedes take ~8 weeks to produce a custom car. It's fairly standard practice around the industry.
Both my OA and DS have been responsive but neither can nail down the delivery date so far. I noticed that if you place your car today it still says March delivery, so I asked and the response:
"at the moment, all custom builds are being slotted in March"
I ordered in mid December so it sounds like nothing is being built for local delivery so far. Anyone has better news than me?

Ordered mine Dec 9, got the VIN on Jan 6. I also live in the Bay area. Haven't asked for an update since around Jan. 10 or so, but like I have complained about a few times, I get a generic "early to mid-Feb". You'd think by this point, they would know...
Teslas to Switzerland shouldn't go to Tilburg as this cars are finally assembled already in Fremont. Only EU cars route to Tilburg for final assembly (tax reasons).

Ahhhh good! I didn't know it, but when I looked on the website, my VIN was there! Have you received an approximate delivery date yet?
Ordered on 1/13, conformed on 1/26.
Current estimated delivery date is just "March"
My contact at the Tesla showroom mentioned that deliveries may be sped up once production of right hand side models s complete (this usually winds down in Q1).
There could be a crop of new inventory vehicles showing up in February which could move the needle in terms of people ahead of you choosing the inventory vehicle instead of a new/custom one.

I ordered on 11/11, confirmed 11/18. I received my VIN in early December which was then was updated to J in January. Getting the earl, mid, late February timeframe from the DS. The last news was that the production schedule was going to lock on 1/22. Haven’t heard anything more. And I’m a west coaster.

I am exactly a month behind you, in regard to order date. I ordered Dec. 11, confirmed Dec. 14 and just received my VIN this past weekend, January 18th. Got my first communication today from my delivery specialist telling me production is slated for mid February to the end of February with delivery from mid March to the end of March. I am in Tennessee so I'd expect mine to take a while to arrive but not quite sure how long the trip should actually take. Anyway, here I sit and here I wait.
I hope your car is currently in production at this date. I believe I was told by someone who should know, that the Model S takes a week to "build." I may have misunderstood but I do not believe I did. Please keep us posted on your car's progress! Good luck!
