Wiki Model S Delivery Update

Mine took a little over 24 hours to activate. I asked the service center about the time and they said sometimes when deliveries are high it can take 36 hours. It was a little annoying that it didn't work right off the bat, but considering that you can lock/unlock and start the car remotely I can see that it should not work before you have taken delivery.

You might not be aware of this, but the Tesla Service Centers which prep the new cars for delivery are considered the final step in production and quality control. By this I mean, sometimes cars arrive at the Service Center which need a part or two to fine tuned or fitted and in some cases installed or even replaced. I have seen cars shipped with the optional rear spoiler inside the rear trunk. Each car is shipped with "factory software" running and in service mode. The Service Center technicians go thru a series of checks and tests as does the prep crew who unwraps the cars, inspects the exterior and interior and does the pre delivery prep and cleaning. If you car is being delivered to your home via a trucker, these steps often take place at a Service Center prior to loading on the truck for final delivery.

I have seen many cars at my local Service Center marked PDI and then PDI OK in a dry marker on the upper part of the driver's side front windshield. I assume that PDI indicates that the Pre Delivery Inspection was done and PDI OK means the car has been inspected and is awaiting final prep and cleaning. Generally, cars that have passed PDI and have been prepped for delivery are kept indoors for delivery. I am not sure if the PDI dry marker nomenclature on the driver's side upper window is a Tesla "standard" across all Service Centers...

There are some other markings I have seen, typically on the sticker located on the upper driver's side of the windshield... CUSTOMER means customer's ordered car and MARKETING indicates a demo car or one destined for a showroom or other such use.

This quarter is not typical IMHO. Usually in many quarters past, the first month of the quarter (July) there are very few US domestic deliveries as most of the cars produced have been for foreign markets such as Europe and Asia/Pacific. It appears to me that Tesla has been able to mix in some domestic deliveries into their production line(s) to help alleviate to delivery drought. This then will help the domestic Service Centers greatly as they were often slammed in the end of a quarter with a huge influx of new cars.

I hope you all enjoy your model S's as much as I have over the past 6 months. It is a spectacular car. I learn something new about it each day really. As will you. When I drive my other car which is an ICE I am totally amazed as the "lag" that is there when you step on the ICE's go pedal. It is almost as if something is wrong with the ICE.... then I smile. You will too.

Wow, thank you for that fantastic post. So incredibly helpful. I think, for many of us waiting, the process is shroud in so much mystery.... Which only worsens our anxiety about the delivery of our new baby. I honestly appreciate this kind of info.

However, as a result, I will be stalking my local dealer/service center in hopes of spotting my silver S75d with PDI OK on it. This will be subsequently followed by a demand for immediate delivery of said vehicle. :p

I have always found that a friendly smile, a dozen great (not run of the mill crap) donuts and or coffee ring (from a great bakery) and kind words work wonders at an service oriented establishment. When in doubt... take the "Columbo" route.... (old TV show about a sleuth who played dumb but asked all he great questions in an un-threatening manner...)

Demand.... ehhh, not so much...

Just venting. I know many feel the same.
Day 21 and still not in production. I have given up checking mytesla page often as i keep getting dissapointed with same status.
Tesla got to realy fix this process to make it more transparent. Its very frustrating to see others moving ahead of the line though they are of same config and location.

I think we need to track if car is leased Vs. buying, if financing is already completed or still waiting. When I first ordered my S I stated Tesla financing. I later changed my mid to my own credit union. I couldn't change it on the web page so I sent my DS an email and told him I am approved through my own credit union and asked him to change it on MyTesla page. He did that and also stated my car would start production next week. I had waited before applying for the loan because I have read about the 30 limit with Allient before they run another credit inquiry. Had I not waited and had credit in hand would my vehicle have been made sooner? Don't know. Just seemed like a coincidence that I tell DS financing is set and he tells me production starts next week. By the way I never asked about the production schedule.

Your Tesla has been built and is in transit from the factory. The delivery process guidewill provide additional information about what to expect along the way. If you have questions, please contact your delivery specialist.

My DS said the car should be here within the week on an email yesterday. Looked at my page today and it changed from "In Production" to "In Transit"

The weird thing is my timeframe went backwards as it was previously expected delivery August 4th-18th, and now it says the 12th through the 18th.

I am going to trust the DS and go with his it is coming this week and hopefully I can get it soon!!!!

My dates changed a lot. Sometimes forwards, sometimes backwards. Pick the middle date to focus on. It will be the most accurate. And when is comes in earlier, you'll be that much happier

I'd love to pay for it but I havent heard back from Alliant after multiple attempts.

Congrats to you. You are the third person I've seen on here to start and end production before I've started.

My DS is convinced my situation is completely normal. See my thread titled "6 days and still no VIN?" Where I talk about not receiving a VIN until 6 days after my order confirmed. That happens but isn't the norm. I could not get an answer as to why. (Spoiler: got VIN 7 days after order confirmed).

There has got to be something about our orders that have put us on the back burner whether it's an option, location, or something else. Instead of speculating, I wish my DS told me the reason.

I'm with you on that one... the spreadsheet data shows ~12 days average from VIN to in production for 60/60D vehicles; however, I'll be altering those stats as I'm at 26 days and counting. And I've already been approved for the lease as applied right away before my confirmation date to insure I qualified, as was a concern since I still have a loan on my VW TDI I'll be getting rid of in Oct with the TDI settlement. I keep thinking it's due to me indicating I'd like to pick up in the first week or two of August or that I'm picking up at the Factory so they are putting others ahead as will still work out with the same time from order to delivery if mine is produced later. But agree with you, would be nice to know if there was some reason... especially as I'm sure the DS realize we are crowdsourcing info so have some insight into the rates of other owners going into production/etc.

Thank you for a very informative post ArtInCT!

It's been 11 days since my Tesla finished at the factory and went into "in transit" status. My sleep has been highly disrupted as if I wake up in the middle of the night I instantly wonder where "Thor" is and start checking the mytesla page on my phone for updates. Google knows I'm obsessed because the first link in my chrome homepage is now the myTesla page. Second link is teslamotorsclub.com.

I think I have a problem.

I have a distinct inability to grow facial hair, but am considering a "Tesla scruff" from here until delivery. Please send food, and caffeine.

My wife and 4 year old came up with Electra. Who am I to argue?

Hope to see some big movements this week after my DS said "within the week" and "in transit" was updated on Sunday.

Best of luck to us.
