Wiki Model S Delivery Update

@emailforbrett Well, good luck with that! For $150k+ for a new car, that wouldn't work for some of us.

Was supposed to be all repaired today. They pushed it another week. I punted on this VIN and told my SA I’ll wait for another car. This $130,000 car has been out of the factory for months just sitting in the body shop awaiting parts. I’d rather wait for a “new” Plaid that has just rolled off the assembly line, defect-free.

Have any of you declined a delivery of your Plaid/LR refresh? If so, how long until a new VIN was assigned. My VIN is now blank but shows delivery in a week (yeah right).

That’s all one needs to look at in this debate about which one has better “value”. Tesla is arguably producing more LRs than Plaids, yet, there are so many inventory Plaids available and no LRs
Plaids being dropped into inventory has nothing to do with excess product or lack of demand.

thanks for the reply. Unlike most leases, i think Tesla's don't have a buy out option - at least i think my lease doesn't - so i may convert to purchase before picking up - i was going to buy my daughter's compass at the end of the lease and then just flip it and make $5k or whatever, and decided not to bother.

some of my thoughts include will the 4680 cells come out on the LR or Plaid or whatever the S will be at the time, and what will that do to the current refresh? How about Lucid, Rivian, Polestar, etc.? Right now Tesla is really in the lead - but the others may catch up. It doesn't diminish how great the car is per se, but if i can get a similar car or superior car, for the same or less money, that would decrease the value of my 3 year old car at the time.
years ago, i was looking at townhouses, and the market dropped, so the guy trying to sell his offered to sell for less if he could prepay more of his mortgage - new ones were going for LESS!!!!
I'm not worried about a few dollars, I AM more concerned about 36 months later, i'm i the present tesla monkey situation and then i'd need a stop gap car, which would kinda suck.
Tough decision. Unlike ICE cars, the technology for EVs is changing rapidly. We might have solid state batteries in 3-5 years (doubtful). We'll definitely have 4680s even on Elon time and a lot of new EV models from everyone. I was torn between leasing and buying too and almost decided to lease after they cancelled the Plaid + and it became clear that no 4680 model S cars would be coming anytime soon.

Lurking on the forums here before ordering changed my mind. There was the lease timing issue you mentioned (what do you do in 36 months if they announce 4680s and you end up in this situation but without a car while you wait). Plus, all the talk of PPF and Ceramic has me convinced I need it but since it is not worth the expense on a short term lease, I figured I would buy the car, keep it 5 or more years, and hope the loss in resale value (even with aged EV tech) will be a wash compared to 2+ years of payments. Also, I am already saving a ton by not being able to buy the Plaid + (I really want the latest battery tech) and instead buying the LR to tide me over.

LR, MS with black interior, no FSD, 19" wheels, ordered May 1, RN1148 // current EDD 9/21-30 BUT I have entered my EDD range this month 2x already and each time my EDD got pushed back the day after I entered the range/ my SA says I am getting October production/ all BS, only VIN matters).

Kinda pisses me off when I see my config in stock in the US but I'm still waiting for a VIN... Located in Orange County...

Rolled off the assembly line on the 16th, cream with carbon fiber. Paint is good, alignment is good, no dings, dents or scratches. Some rubber seals a little wiggly, but the heat from CA will handle that. The passenger seat, the stitching a little wiggly to, but not enough for me to ask for a new seat or fix. Overall I can tell that they have it down now, and anyone getting a 444+ vin should be happy. Also it had the shelf and floor mats.

Can I submit final payment the day before delivery?
Nooooooooooo! PLEASE don't do this!

IMO, you should *never* give them the money for the car until you have had a chance to inspect it! If the car has issues to the point that you would like to refuse delivery, you will wait months to get your money back from Tesla! Source: many people have gone through this nightmare and have posted about it here.

Remember, that YOU are the customer! Don't let Tesla forget this!

When I went to take delivery of my Model 3 Performance, I had the check from the credit union in my hand. When I arrived, they immediately wanted to do the paper work, and part me from my check as quickly as possible. I stated that I would like to inspect the car before doing the paper work. The SA said, "that isn't our procedure. We will not give you access to the car until the paper work is done" (read: we have your check in our possession). I stated that I would not be purchasing the car unless I was able to inspect it first, and would walk out the door unless they granted my not unreasonable request.

Next thing I know, I'm escorted to the car and allowed to inspect the vehicle for as long as I wanted.

After inspecting the car, I then signed the paper work and gave them their money.

YOU are the Customer. Make them treat you like one. DO NOT give them the money until you have inspected the car and are satisfied with it.

Edit to add: In certain markets (I believe Texas is one of them) the above doesn't apply, and you will have to give them their money first.

From a pure business point of view it probably makes sense to offer any cars not accepted by the original ordering customer (cancelled, changed mind, could not get financing etc) to any possible new buyers. Hence drop them in inventory. You and I who are already in the waiting process are almost money in the bank for Tesla and in fact most of the diehards here are not going anywhere. They will get a Tesla however long it takes. Me included.

Well damn, mine still says Sept 20-30 after 4 moves of EDD this month. 1142 Blue/white int/CF/19"/FSD
I have no VIN and if yours just moved then, then mine has to be after (build components the same really). Sure hope it's a Q3 delivery.
I have same config as you, with an EDD of October 5-25 (located all the way on the other side of the country). Seems consistent with a batched production of this config pretty darn soon. Here's hoping!
