SYD - BNE Supercharger Route

This site may earn commission on affiliate links.
I've only done the BNE to SYD and back once.
I have a single charger 70D.

I used the J1772 adapter cable at Stockland shopping centre Burleigh and at The EcoPark 19 Grays Lane Tyagarah.
I used a Tesla UMC plus the 32A three phase to Euro 5 pin cable for for the UMC at Coff's Harbour Showgrounds and mangrovemike's in Newcastle.

I also took 50A (both 3phase and single phase), 20A 3 phase, 20A, 15A and 10A single phase (that last one came with the UMC) to Euro 5 pin cables for the UMC but did not need any of them (YourMilageMayVary). In Sydney I purchased a CHAdeMO adaptor but have yet to need that either.

I used destination chargers during overnight stays at: The Nelson Resort, Brunswick River Inn and The Observatory.
I also used the Cassegrain and St Leonards Super Chargers in NSW.

I stand indebted to Mike of Newcastle, thanks very much Mike for providing a much needed charging location and a friendly attitude. The EcoPark noted above was still a work in progress when I visited but Dieter is a lovely man, let me drive his BMW REX i3 too while I got some charge in my car. All the overnight stays noted above were excellent, the folks at Coff's Harbour were also first rate as were those at the two SuperCharger locations.

@dogphlap: Always happy to help while our Superchargers are being built (due 2015 ....) :)

Hi Marcel., still doing my research. I contacted the people suggested in Osrams note, and got the following reply. In the circumstances, I am going to wait and see What we find when we do yours. I can get product from at least two sources here in Sydney very quickly.

As we only stock a select amount of product from the Osram range in
ballasts, can you please send through a photo of what you currently have
(specifically the voltages and pin positions).
The reason being is that ballasts are an expensive unit and if not matched
correctly, carry extremely high voltages which cause no amounts of
problems.
When you are free and have a chance, before I offer up part numbers,
please send though what you have available.
Alternatively, please feel free to stop into your local distributor with
the part in question for further price and further information -

Our primary stockists include the following -

Burson Auto Parts Autobarn Sprint Auto Parts (SA) Auto One
Covs Parts (WA) R & E Auto

Truckline ALCO Battery Sales Blackwoods Ashdown-Ingram
Maxiparts R & J Batteries

Supercheap Auto Alanco (WA) Auto Pro Repco Cooldrive

Hi all, following on from earlier posts, I have now successfully had a Tesla HPWC installed at ‘Riptide’ (beachfront house at Wooli, NSW), which is almost exactly halfway between the Gold Coast and Port Macquarie (264 klms Nth of Port Macquarie / 260 klms South of the Gold Coast).

I’ve listed it on Plugshare

I am offering free charging for guests who stay at the house - see link below. However, importantly for this forum, I would never see a fellow Tesla driver without a charge. So if you are caught short in that region (near Grafton - 30 mins off the Pacific Highway) don't get stuck. Feel free to contact me (this site/whatsApp/Slack) and I will ask the real estate to make the charger key available to you so you may recharge & get yourself out of trouble - free of course! It’s a 32 amp single phase which delivers about 45 klms/hour.

That's really kind of you Vegas, thanks so much.
Might have to check it out if I'm heading up north later this month.

Thanks again.

In the absence on a Newcastle Supercharger there is now another 3 Phase 32A option in Newcastle. This one is much closer to the F3/Pacific Highway at the Hunter Wetlands Centre (Shortland), Make sure you take Sandgate Road exit, ie. drive past the inner city expressway exit, there is no exit at Shortland from the inner city expressway. MangroveMike and I had lunch there today and it is a very very tranquil location and the cafe food was reasonable. They also have PV installed.

Cool ! I will be able to visit my sister in Armidale without super slow charging on the way !
Are you sure 3 phase 32 A ? Is that through the Type 2 cable ?

Announcing a new Sydney-Brisbane link in Ballina.
I have just installed a Tesla 32A 3-phase connector at my work in Ballina (no special adapters or leads needed).
Thanks Tesla!
I tested it for the first time today and got up to 110km/hr with dual chargers
Ballina is just off the Pacific Highway, about 295km from the Port Macquarie Supercharger and 195km from Brisbane CBD.
We have a 42kW solar array on the roof and although we use the lot, I am happy to share some electrons with fellow Tesla owners.
While we await the ?Ewingsdale ?Macadamia Castle Supercharger (Yes it will be one or the other), Ballina offers a most convenient link for through traffic.
Ballina is a small country town. We are close to the river and main drag. There is plenty to do for a couple of hours.
As the installation was only completed this week it is not yet on any map or list.
Find us at the rear of myEyeSpecialist Ballina / Ballina Day Surgery 46 Tamar Street, on Winton Lane.
Winton Lane is a small commercial access road running between Tamar St and River St.
The connector is on the rear left corner of the building on Winton Lane.
If there is a wheeley bin there just move it. It is there to deter our neighbours from blocking the space.
If the gate is open, feel free to reverse into the undercover spot.
I suppose a day hospital makes a bit of a weird spot for a destination charger.
If anyone is keen on an Australian first I could supply a list of operations possible during a 3-hour charge!

Great news! We may be heading that way on a Saturday, is it accessible outside business hours?

Fantastic news!!! Thanks so much for providing a really welcome option with still no news from Tesla regarding the Supercharger. I'll definitely be popping in occasionally for an extra 100 km or so range. How would we pay you for the power?

Nice addition to the destination chargers network (sadly lacking in the area). Do you do eye tests or just surgical procedures? - I need an anual test soon and knowing I'd be supporting a fellow Tesla owner, I would have no problems making a day of it - driving Brisbane to Ballina/eye test, charge & lunch/then home.

Fantastic news. Thanks for supporting Tesla drivers between Sydney & Brisbane

The connector is on an external wall so it is accessible 24 hours a day.
If the cable is out of reach, there is a button to open the electric gate on the rear side of the left hand side pillar.
In Tesla spirit there is no charge.
At myEyeSpecialist Ballina, there is an eye clinic with eye doctors. We look after eye conditions such as cataract, macular degeneration, diabetes and eyelid plastic surgery, rather than eye tests like an optometrist. In Ballina Day Surgery we do day case endoscopy and plastic surgery as well as eye surgery, and also a bit of orthopaedics and general surgery. We have a sister hospital right in the centre of Robina Town Centre where we do IVF as well as ophthalmology consultations and surgery.
My P90D is perfect for travelling between the 2 sites. It is a dream trip on autopilot and I often stop at The Farm at Ewingsdale for fresh sourdough bread (highly recommended).
With solar at home (33kw) and at work (42kw) I have managed about 95% of travel on solar.
