Fantastic event. Minor note: on the initial map flashed up (and the one posted to the top of this thread), it appears that Houston was relocated to Orange (on the border of Texas and Louisiana). Great to hear that Houston to Dallas and Austin are going to be easy after the initial push, although Houston to Pensacola is still going to take some work until the longer rollout. Perhaps some of the border casinos will add fast chargers and offer to take my money while I charge. :)

So I see that both the 2-year-plan and the long-term-plan have been screenshotted and posted in this thread.

It seems the 2013 plan isn't posted yet:

So, I recall two conversations with tesla specialists in late August who noted that the 60kWh cars would already have the supercharge hardware and software installed, but would require a fee for the software to be activated, whereas this would be free for the 85 kWh cars. Sounds exactly right.

I think it's important to stop for a moment, step back from our own personal views of whether this announcement benefits us personally *right now* (is there a supercharger near me?) And think about it for a minute from a 30,000 foot view.

What we've just seen is absolutely revolutionary. From this point on, the argument about "electric outlets anywhere"...while it still holds...is no longer necessary. Who wants to charge at 8 or 16 miles an hour when you can charge at 10 or 20 times that? Within 4 years, almost the entire country will be dotted with "free, green gas stations". This will change the face of our planet, and the behavior of the human race, for decades to come. That's not an understatement.

This is monumental, even if your nearby supercharger won't be here for another 4 years.

So, what the limit on 'Free' charging? There is always a limit.

Can I buy a Model S as a Taxi and continually hit my local cities supercharger 3x a day, every day? I'm sure there is/will be fine print somewhere on how many charges per day/week per location, etc.

If the SC is along my work commute, can I stop 2x/week and 'fill up'? This just added a remarkable amount of value if so.

(In Owatonna right now, by coincidence...) Think about how far you'd go if you left your home with a full charge. Could you make it to a supercharger location? Would you need to charge at a J1772 once? Twice?

The trips we want to make are Minneapolis to Chicago. 400 miles. The best placement for a supercharger is Tomah WI, but that is not in the 2 year plan either. Until then it will require a 2 hour stop in Sparta WI and an overnight in Madison WI. Or we can take the Volt.

You know we will never be able to please everyone right now, but think where this network will be in 2 or 3 years. This company is in it's infancy and has done more for the American consumer in one shot that any or all of the other so called BIG car companies combined. I am very proud to be a shareholder and a res holder. I say BRAVO TESLA. You have made all the other car companies look like CLOWNS. I think this is akin to GM saying buy one of our cars and we will give you gas for life , oh except we will be poisoning the air you breath. Now I need to figure out how to get 6 85kw battery packs and 4 motors to power my BUS and I am set for life.

...
2) That's a phallic beacon of some sort beckoning to parched Model S drivers. Appears to be non-functional otherwise. We saw the actual SC box already with the cable sticking out.
...

It is possible that the stand with the cable doesn't have all the electronics in it.
Many CHAdeMO stations have a small device next to the car, and a bigger box ("the rectifier") nearby.
Perhaps the big pointy has a bunch of charging equipment inside.

Nicely put.

+1 million!

I agree...I was trying to make out some of the East Coast locations, and to me it looked roughly like the locations were: Albany NY, New London CT, NYC and Brookhaven NY on Long Island...Actually, on my map, the Long Island location looked like it right inside the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory! The map is pretty fuzzy, so I could certainly be off by a bit...But that did make me laugh :)

Wonder if we'll be able to get the exact locations or at least something a bit more specific than the dots on the map. I'm a little disappointed in the NY/NJ area plan, doesn't look very useful to me at all.

So, what the limit on 'Free' charging? There is always a limit.

Why would there be a limit? Remember, it's solar powered...so the only cost to Tesla is the fixed capital cost of installation. Once it's there, you can use it all you want and it doesn't affect their bottom line at all. That's what's so freakin' cool about it...and one reason why it's so game-changing.

Blink and the rest are going to get acid reflux from this announcement!
