Looking for some help!! I have a '17 MS 100D with MCU1, FSD paid for, upgraded computer and cameras. I asked why I still haven't been enrolled to beta (opted in over a year ago) and was told that I need to upgrade to MCU2 because the Tegra system couldn't handle FSD. I stated that was incorrect, that vehicles with MCU1 have FSD and they said I would need to provide VIN numbers as proof. Looking for people to send VIN numbers to prove the service center wrong. Thanks
What firmware version is on your Model S?

… was told that I need to upgrade to MCU2 because the Tegra system couldn't handle FSD…
If you get that in writing, it will be a help to you and others in getting MCU2 upgrades. You’re going to need the upgrade if you want FSD anytime soon.

The version of FSD that was installed on those few MCU1 vehicles was subject to a recall. And no version has been released since. So although there are a few VINs, giving them to the service center won’t help.

Also, as Mike is alluding, they also won’t downgrade your firmware.

Downloading 2022.8.10.17 now. MCU1 with FSD computer and upgraded cameras. Never had the chance to try FSD could this be it? I will report back. I’m doubtful it’s FSD beta.
Nope. Confusingly, FSD Beta is in 2022.8.10.10 (10.69.3.3), 10.15 (believed 10.69.3.3) and 10.20 (believed 11.x). Non-FSD software versions use numbers not divisible by 5 for the last part of the version number. About 10x as many folks appear to be running non-FSD as the FSD version.

I went from 2022.8.10.8 in December 2022 to 2022.8.10.10 in early January 2023 (rolled out on NYE). Holding on 10.15 for now, although 10.20 is downloaded and ready to install.

I asked the least chatty/hallucinating GPT and answer was:
You
Will FSD concretely work with an old MCU1 Main Computer?

Copilot
FSD v12 will not work with the MCU1 Main Computer. The MCU1 (Media Control Unit 1) is the older hardware version found in some Tesla Model S and Model X vehicles. Unfortunately, it lacks the processing power and memory required to handle the advanced features of FSD v12. If you’re driving a vehicle with an MCU1, you won’t be able to use the upcoming FSD v12. However, if you have a newer Tesla vehicle with updated hardware, you’ll be able to enjoy the benefits of FSD v12! 🚗🤖

  1. Hardware Limitations: FSD v12 requires upgraded hardware, such as the Tesla FSD Computer (HW3). Older vehicles with MCU1 or legacy hardware won’t fully benefit from FSD features.

So how do others feel about paying for FSD, letting Tesla have our money for years, then them refusing to upgrade all the components we need to run FSD? The excuse before was it's beta, now it's not.

We have several Teslas in family and one S with MCU1 and refuse to upgrade it. I see several have sued in small claims court, won, taken $ and bought MCU2 with it. Is that only option?

I did the free SC and FSD upgrade for a 2024 from my 3 so support Tesla but this is dishonest if not fraudulent is my view on this S.

@BitShop it's infuriating. I've been asking my local SC to do the upgrade to MCU2 for years and they insist I'll have to pay, despite Tesla's wording that my car was sold with "all hardware necessary for full self driving."

They keep claiming FSD for MCU1 is "coming soon" but they can't give me a definitive date.

Did you see Elon's tweet last month that all FSD capable cars would be getting a free month? MCU1 cars were left out in the cold once again.

The local SC claims I'm wanting FSD "faster" than everyone else. Not true. I want it at the same speed as everyone else. Anyone who bought a Tesla in 2018 or later (and got MCU2) got FSD last month. I bought in 2017 and did *not* get FSD last month. Does that seem fair?

I'm moving forward with a case in small claims court to get Tesla to do the right thing and cover the MCU2 upgrade. It's crazy that they are holding MCU1 owners hostage for more money if they want the FSD they paid hard earned cash for originally.

I'm not sure that is true. According to TeslaFi there is still at least 5% of the fleet that hasn't gotten the FSD trial yet, and no they aren't all MCU1 vehicles.

You did have FSD at one point, so you do have the hardware for FSD, but as they said they just haven't made the latest version available for MCU1 vehicles yet.

Okay, so it's not 100% of MCU2 vehicles, but it's pretty close. The point is, the FSD firmware for MCU2 exists right now. It doesn't for MCU1 (at least, not any longer since the previous build from Jan was pulled due to "safety reasons").

I was sold FSD capability in 2020. I'm now being told my car is not capable of FSD right now, but will be capable of FSD at some future point in time. They can't give me a date. So I'm stuck sitting here with a depreciating vehicle, waiting for a promise to be kept. Meanwhile, 95% of MCU2 cars have FSD despite buying the package years later than I did. Any reasonable person would look at this situation and say, "that ain't right."

Are you in the same MCU1 boat with me? Because if you're not, it's quite easy to rationalize Tesla's actions. It's a lot more difficult if you're stuck with an MCU1 vehicle after having paid thousands of dollars for software that's rolling out to everyone else except you.
