2023 Model Y Unacceptable Build Quality and Issues

Must have been Elon's new AI Bots doing the QC on this one. The good news is that they only need to "train" the AI on 30 million additional new cars and then they should be good to go...until the car is updated. Then start the AI training all over again... Good luck getting these items fixed. To me, looks like you have several service appointments (and several weeks) of headaches to deal with.

It doesn't matter when it's built. Tesla emphasizes quantity over quality. I assume most are fine, but for the few that are not, Tesla doesn't want to fix them until you pay them first.

Only when Tesla changes its practice, that's when will you not see that lousy quality anymore (They would fix them before showing them to anyone.)
It does matter, actually. As most of us are going to be accepting delivery, and if this was a car coming out of the factory I would want to know to prepare myself.

All your other statements are absolutely true, but don’t imply that this question shouldn’t matter.

Yep. Sure seems like it. If probs were found before delivery (e.g. at factory or delivery center), it seems Tesla is much more interested in making the sale by collecting the $ and booking the sale. Holding up cars to fix them prevents them from doing that.

And yeah, it seems they still have plenty of demand and people willing to put up with this crap so they don't have much incentive to make things better and ship fewer defective cars.

I've never leased nor bought a new car with such obvious paint, harness and trim probs at delivery nor had those wheel balance probs. I've heard of and seen some pretty bad new vehicles Tesla's has handed over here on TMC.

Hello All!
I want to share my experience with the delivery of my Model Y yesterday (1/25/2023) a Burbank CA.
The car was parked outside and the agent asked me to look around, I started seeing cosmetics issues, Paint bleeding, Scratches, Misalignment, wiring harness and others. The agent mentioned that since we are at a service center, all (or most) this can be fixed immediately. After I took delivery, and was ready to leave, he pointed me to the direction of the service center and asked to turn left at the end of the road. When I reached the entrance I was stopped and was told that I was given the wrong info and I will have to create a ticket and submitted it and a schedule a service date. I went back in and the delivery agent now tells me that he told me that they will address my concerns but it depends on them when. I made some noise and they send a service specialist to help me create the service request, take photos etc. She did help me to get an appointment for 2/4/2023 and was told that I will get a loaner with unlimited miles and free supercharging. I left and as i got of the freeway, I could feel the steering vibrating at speeds above 60. It is pretty pronounced and I can feel it through the seat and my hands and neck start to hurt because of the constant shaking. I got home and added another this item to the service ticket and it now moved my date to 2/11/2023.
I called in to get a closer date but the agent I spoke to couldn't care less and told me it should be OK to drive the car with the vibrations. I repeated what he had said to me and he confirmed his previous statement. I asked to talk to manager or someone who could help me, but he would not give me an email address or phone number and said he will put in a request for a manger to call me back.

I have attached some photos.

Thanks
Sorry to see this. My 2021 MYP was flawless at delivery. Sold it in September to make room for the Rivian. No regrets. Welcome to the world of a Tesla owner - 2023. Service wasn’t this bad prior to 2020.

Id expect that from a used car lot that isn’t paved. Wow.

So sorry to see these build quality problems. Stevie Wonder could have conducted better quality control.
There is NO excuse. They seem to just be building them as fast as they can with no qc to keep them from
getting on the delivery trucks.
I had a 2021 Model Y LR but sold it and bought a 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 which turned out to be a big mistake.
The 12v battery died on my I5 and it has been in the shop since Oct. 31. It is still there, and I have a lemon law
claim pending. Was thinking of going back with another MY but after seeing so many qc issues on the forum,
I'm afraid to get back into the water. I'm really confused, as I would be super upset if I was unlucky enough
to have issues that would cause me to deal with online reservation making for repairs. This system sucks that
you can't speak with a human. What has happened to the normal way things should work? It seems owners have
accepted this treatment, so it will continue. Everyone says it stinks, yet nothing changes, and people keep buying Teslas.
I am looking at other cars that have a more normal delivery system, higher qc, and less headaches in ownership.

Another future problem I see is that they are selling tons of new Teslas, but not building any additional service centers (in my area),
so the existing ones will get that much more crowded, with longer waits for repairs.
Hyundai service sucks so that leaves out another Ioniq 5 or Kia EV6 for me.
Nah… I think it’s one of few. I got my 2nd MYLR7 last December 23rd. I couldn’t find a single defect. But my 2021 MYLR7 had some minor dings that I didn’t think it’s worth taking it to Tesla shop.

This is not good but it looks like it should hopefully get fixed by service. Still not a good way to start the ownership experience. I'm sorry you experienced this on delivery day.

With that said, I can't stress enough the importance of inspecting the vehicle for quality issues before accepting delivery. If the delivery center will not allow you to see it, then refuse delivery. There's no way they should be able to make you accept delivery of a car site unseen. This is totally unacceptable too. Deliver a brand new car to a customer in this condition.

How did they make you sign and accept before you can see it? I’m taking delivery at that location this Sunday and it is my first time so I’m kinda nervous. I would like to check out the car before I hand them the check
Tesla's policy is to let you inspect the exterior but not necessarily the interior. However, if you ask, some SAs will open up the car and let you check out the interior. My SA didn't even hesitate when I asked to checkout the inside before accepting delivery.
I bet if you threaten to walk away and reject the VIN they won't want that hassle and will let you in the car to inspect. I can't see how they could prevent you from seeing the outside of the car as they should just be sitting outside in the lot.

The only times I have seen "must pay first" are:

1. States that do not allow tesla direct sales. In this case, the car is actually "sold" to the person in CA, then delivered to them in their state (regardless of where its actually shipped from). People in these states have to pay first.

2. Many people getting home delivery. In many of these cases its a third party delivery company, so the car is actually purchased at the tesla location then shipped for home delivery by third party carrier. Tesla seems to make some people getting home delivery pay first.

Since I dont live in a state that disallows tesla direct sales, there was no way I would do a home delivery and not be able to see the car first. I have 2 teslas (a 2018 model 3 and a 2022 model Y) and both times I took delivery at a delivery center, and didnt hand over payment until I physically looked at the car.

In both cases I asked could I see inside the car. In 2018 they still had a return policy, there was no issue looking in the car. In 2022 tesla was pushing people to accept, pay with the "plaid" payment service, etc, and I took a cashiers check with me for delivery walked around the car, and asked the SA "mind if I look inside for a few minutes?" They didnt have any issue at all.

Note, however, that I did not have any sort of checklist in my hand, no gap measuring tools, etc as some people show up to these appointments with. As someone who has either done or managed people who do customer service rolls my entire working life (and I am in my 50s) I can say very confidently that the energy someone shows up with is going to typically be reciprocated... (thats any customer service interaction though).

If someone shows up with what is obviously some checksheet, and starts "demanding" they need to see the car inside and out, and they will not be rushed, and has a "let me talk to the manager" attitude, that is going to be reciprocated with the same "letter of the Tesla rulebook" energy. If someone is chill, mellow, and treats the delivery person like a professional, in general, a person will get that same energy back and be allowed to look, do, see, etc.

Don't worry about that. Be firm. Who buys anything, especially a car, without inspecting it. If they try to pull that, you can be firm and more respectful than them. You're in charge. Don't sign or hand over any $ unless you are happy to do so. You are in charge over your money. They are not the boss of you.

This. The sales reps want to get done and move on, some don't care at all.

Be assertive.

Anytime these days, you need to advocate for yourself. Everyone is so busy nobody has time for anyone. From the Doctors office to the car lot, you need to assert yourself or you will be the one giving up the slack.

You are paying 50k plus for a car, you are telling me i cant sit in the thing first to make sure the inside isnt as bad as the obviously bad outside? They can keep it.

Is there a checklist out there that we should take with us when we pick up our own?

We took delivery end of December. I had a detailed checklist with me that I went through.( Reference:Mike Seuss on YouTube)

On delivery day, they were okay with exterior inspection but refused to allow interior inspection until payment was made. They wouldn't budge on this issue. Since we were going for the EOY Tesla rebate, we didn't want to risk refusing delivery and missing out on the rebate *sigh*.

Thankfully we noticed only minor issue with an interior inspection later which is being addressed by them through mobile service.
