2023 Model Y Unacceptable Build Quality and Issues

BEMY - you're just another passenger in the sinking boat.
So many qc problems being reported, and Tesla continues to crank out cars without
(it seems) any interest in resolving any issues.
Its surprising so many buyers are accepting delivery with obvious qc issues, and having
to put up with service center visits to get them repaired. Obviously your time is worth nothing
to them.
At this time I'm considering buying another Model Y (I had a 2021) but extremely concerned
about build quality. My 2021 was nearly perfect at delivery. It did require one mobile service visit
but that was it.

Squeaky wheel I think. No one comes back to these forums to say “my delivery was perfect”.

I’d love to see the data around the people who actually come to TMC until delivery, and never return. The ones that do usually have something negative to report.

Here's a good report. Nice to see for a change.

With Tesla, knowing their scams, you don't accept a car you can't even inspect properly.
If they want to sell the car, they put it in a place where you can inspect fully.
Otherwise, walk away.
Sorry you personally had to go thru all of this.
It's lesson learned and I do agree, that people should use their intuition and walk away and i hope others reading this can learn from my experiences and OP

For the most part, i am not the type to accept vehicles that have such egregious issues especially at this price point. However, at the time I was kind of in a predicament since my wife and i at the time thought we were getting a good deal with the $7,500 credit and if we refused we would have lost out on the opportunity.

Yes, it is very unfortunate that tesla continues to allow such vehicles to pass their quality control as within specs especially on a new vehicle.

If you do on planning on buying another model Y. It wouldn't hurt to see if they sales advisor would make some exception to allow you to see vehicle before you put in the order fee. There was one manager at my local tesla showroom who mentioned although they normally don't allow this, he would see if they could. Due to being press on time, we ended up just taking the risk.

If it were me, i would reject something to that extent.

This is just my opnion, but the only way i see to properly diagnose that issue to remove, inspect and replace the sunroof glass.

Was this a new vehicle?

yes, so reject is option but not sure if i could get new VIN before March
That is the hard part, as i assume you want to take advantage of the $7500.

The problem with the sunroof glass, you are taking a high risk in the event of heavy rain if that area should leak and now you'll have a bigger problem to deal with.

I don't doubt tesla will fix it, but you should't have to deal with something like that especially on a new vehicle.

I took delivery at the Fremont factory and walked around looking for exterior defects for other cars while waiting for them to fix mine - A LOT, I don’t want to say most, but A LOT had all kinds of random small cosmetic defects yet they were “ready for delivery.” My guess a lot of people tolerate the defects or don’t notice and the most OCD people come back complaining about it in the forums.

However Tesla is definitely not Apple or Toyota when it comes to quality control.

Here are two checklists...I think the second one is most handy as it opens as an app on the phone. There is also a PDF floating around that I have downloaded but don't have the link to get it. If you search the forum you will find it in many threads.

Just sad that this needs to exist.

Hello All!
I want to share my experience with the delivery of my Model Y yesterday (1/25/2023) a Burbank CA.
The car was parked outside and the agent asked me to look around, I started seeing cosmetics issues, Paint bleeding, Scratches, Misalignment, wiring harness and others. The agent mentioned that since we are at a service center, all (or most) this can be fixed immediately. After I took delivery, and was ready to leave, he pointed me to the direction of the service center and asked to turn left at the end of the road. When I reached the entrance I was stopped and was told that I was given the wrong info and I will have to create a ticket and submitted it and a schedule a service date. I went back in and the delivery agent now tells me that he told me that they will address my concerns but it depends on them when. I made some noise and they send a service specialist to help me create the service request, take photos etc. She did help me to get an appointment for 2/4/2023 and was told that I will get a loaner with unlimited miles and free supercharging. I left and as i got of the freeway, I could feel the steering vibrating at speeds above 60. It is pretty pronounced and I can feel it through the seat and my hands and neck start to hurt because of the constant shaking. I got home and added another this item to the service ticket and it now moved my date to 2/11/2023.
I called in to get a closer date but the agent I spoke to couldn't care less and told me it should be OK to drive the car with the vibrations. I repeated what he had said to me and he confirmed his previous statement. I asked to talk to manager or someone who could help me, but he would not give me an email address or phone number and said he will put in a request for a manger to call me back.

I have attached some photos.

Thanks
I would have declined that car and waited for a new one. The build quality is hit or miss and I have some that they are trying to rectify from a 12/29 pickup. It sucks that their service center majority of the time doesn’t do anything really but I will know next time…

The Model Y line is *still* having these shoddy assembly issues???

Totally unbelievable.

When I went to get my Model Y in Sep of 2020, it was garbage, with some parts literally *hanging off* the vehicle (e.g., driver's side A-pillar trim was detached, nearly every panel grossly misaligned, etc.). It took me over a year to identify all the problems (more kept coming up) and get them mostly resolved with the Tesla Service Centers in NoVA.

It blows my mind that over two years later, the production line is still complete cr*p. Tesla just doesn't care about build quality or reliability. They just want to flood the zone with as many cars as they can.

In contrast, our 1.5 year old Volvo XC40 All-Electric Recharge has been flawless. Arrived flawless, performs flawlessly, no assembly or reliability issues. A couple of minor software bugs that pale in comparison to the massive software issues in the Tesla. I can't recommend the XC40 and C40 enough. I'm looking to sell the MY and get a C40 actually. The other EV I'm looking at is the Kia EV6...it's very equivalent to the MY, including mobile app functionality, and is competitively prices.

As long as people buying it and accepting delivery, they can keep cranking this out. Amazing that folks don’t worry about more fundamental build issues related to drivability/safety that may not be as visible as a paint scratch or panel gap.

(Hope those seatbelts are connected properly and someone remembered to attach the airbag)

Fortunately it’s not the old game in town anymore. So hopefully things will improve.

I picked up a new Model Y on January 21. The doors on the driver side don't line up with the pillar. they stick out about 1/4 inch, the windows don't touch the seals and the bottom of the pillar. Tesla is telling me this is within spec. It's also making a low frequency droning noise from the rear hatch. I noted that many other have this problem. Based on what I am reading in this posting I'm very concerned this will never get fixed. I was very much looking forward to owning a Tesla and just over two weeks in and I'm very disappointed. I am very much looking forward to Mercedes Benz producing their "C" level EQ series so I can get a quality EV. Probably two or more years out though.

I'm sorry to hear about that as i know it's frustrating to hear that word "within spec" which i believe they could be quoting some guideliness per tesla manufacture.

Do you know if they are refusing to fix your issues? Also, did you report it in the tesla app within the specified amount of days and miles?

I remember when test driving a sport model y i experiencd those low frequency noises from the rear hatch. However, i haven't had that issue with my current MY.

Is it similar to this?

The vehicle is in the shop at the moment. After heated discussions with the Technician, the service manager and the site manager they agree to "take another look at it". We'll see what happens next week. I haven't had this bad of a quality build problem sinse the 70's!

Well their specs leave a lot to be desired then ....

On a car with frameless doors the windows have to push against the seals. It's pretty much common sense so to me that's corporate speak. When a customer comes back for a manufacturing defect just say within spec.

Next thing they will tell us that a steering wheel that falls off during driving is within spec ...
