Many of the potential reasons mentioned (chip shortages, retooling, yoke approval, fire, etc) would be perfectly acceptable reasons for delays. Tesla would have been transparent and most reservation holders would understand, accept, and wait for their cars.As others have said I think If the delay was due to external events, Elon would have said so. Maybe the gigapress fire is the cause, but I think if that were the case he would have said as much. The fire is a known event. People would expect delays as a result of fire damage so why keep it a secret if the fire was the primary cause?
So since Tesla hasn’t said a word in 3 months, I think it’s something else entirely. The SA don’t even know what’s going on so it’s not something like chip shortages. Tesla at least should have provided an explanation to the customers that were expecting delivery 2 months ago.
There’s only one reason why Tesla would stay silent and risk pissing off customers. It could be something embarrassing and they don’t want to look bad. There’s no other reason I can think of why they wouldn’t be transparent. It could be something to do with performance. Maybe a shortfall, could be a range issue, maybe some parts can’t handle the crazy torque, maybe they realized last minute they needed to go with a slightly larger battery to achieve the performance/range. Maybe they tested the plaid and kept hitting 145, not 155. Maybe Tesla was too transparent on the website with very specific performance numbers like 9.23-155. Of course the car has to meet or exceed those numbers. This would certainly cause a lengthy delay. Who knows, just more speculation..
