I wonder how an on-site storage solution would balance battery longevity vs. maximizing available power, since Li-Ion batteries like to live in the 30-80% SOC range (neither too full nor too empty for extended periods)?

Would they have some sort of control circuitry that stops each battery at 80% SOC? Or would they just say "screw it" and replace them when they start to degrade?

Even after a few Gigafactories are built I think Li-Ion batteries will remain precious, and their voltage and temperature will always be limit controlled. The stationary battery installations are similar to the battery pack in the car, but simplified into a vertical stack somewhat as they do not have to have the shape a floor pan nor have a 5 star crash rating. I imagine they would also have a dedicated liquid heating/cooling system.

Bracketing Barstow

It's great to see the 8 new charging stalls go into Barstow, but reducing the distance and increasing the convenience of Supercharger locations on both sides would greatly reduce the need to 100% charge in Barstow; that would then reduce average charge time and congestion at Barstow.

Primm, NV has been on the "coming soon" map for some time, and hopefully will be in the Fall push of Superchargers that we are all hoping to see. In addition, on the "coming soon" map are several red dots in the LA area. One looks like it is probably near Rancho Cucamonga. That would be a great location of Model S's coming into the LA area from I-15 or I-10 to top up with a nice, quick 80% charge before heading into various locations in the LA area, and more importantly avoiding the need to drive all the way into Hawthorne to charge. Rancho Cucamonga is also in a good spot to grab a charge before heading up 395 to Inyokern where there appears to be a red dot on the 2014 map.

Let's keep our eyes on Primm and Rancho Cucamonga, and maybe even Inyokern!

I was talking with the owner of the recently reopened thermometer thingy in Baker (where Bun Boy used to be), and he said they are pushing to get the Supercharger installed there instead of Primm. Baker is a better location, I think, just because the amenities are more varied, easy walking distance, etc.

(No idea if it's just wishful thinking on their part, how serious he's trying, if TM is even considering it, etc., but hey, I just put it on the Internet so it must be true.)

With how far downhill the casinos have gotten on the Primm, NV border, I wouldn't mind stopping off in Baker instead. Then again, I think I gained miles going downhill from the border TO Baker... So, Primm might still be a good spot before that climb.

He could start by applying for a destination charger. An hour on 80A might just be enough for some drivers to put themselves into range without Barstow.

I agree completely! However, what I feel is more practical is to locate Superchargers in Victorville (near the US395 split with I15) and Mojave. That would eliminate the need for one in Inyokern. Folks travel from San Diego and the Inland Empire up I15 not only to go to Vegas but also to reach the Owens Valley and the Eastern Sierra for skiing and summer outdoor recreation. Folks travel from Los Angeles up I15 for Vegas or Northern Arizona, but usually take SR14 through Mojave to its junction with US395 for the same skiing and summer recreation. Hawthorne SC to Mojave is 105 miles or so, and Oxnard to Mojave is about 125--perfect distances!

Mojave has the further advantage of a decent distance from Harris Ranch (160 miles or so) and also from the Central Valley. This avoids the detour to the Tejon Supercharger as well as possibly bypassing Barstow entirely for trips to Vegas if Baker winds up with a SC (for those winter vacations in Death Valley to see the wildflowers!)

Victoria Gardens in RC would be a great location: lots of parking, upscale shops, Apple Store, restaurants, and theater, but I have been lobbying them for 3 years to install J1772 with no progress.

Last year there were rumors that the Red Dot in Inyokern might be the Spring Hill Suites in Ridgecrest. Based on this rumor, in July of this year I stopped there and asked the manager, but she knew nothing.

Getting back to where we were discussing the Upgrade Construction Status on August 31, did Hussain or anyone else get some photos of the concrete footings/pads with 8 large bolts?
Has the Solar Canopy construction stated? The two footings/pads in the back will anchor the back of the Canopy, but how will the front be anchored? Will the covers on the Charge Monuments be replaced like Tejon Ranch and Hawthorn?
Or might we see a new cantilevered design?

The footings may be for lighting. A much larger footing would be needed for a canopy covered with solar panels. The spacing seems about right for lighting. I'm also curious about the information received about solar canopy construction. Does anyone have the plans or permit stating a canopy of solar panels was going to be installed here in Barstow?

At first glance that was my thought as well. But take a close look at Damiano's photos from August 27th. Existing light poles can been, and they have a tall round concrete base about 18" in diameter and about 28" tall. This is so when cars hit them in parking lots they wont fall over. Also, as I noted in my post August 31st, lights typically use four 1" bolts. These footing/pads have eight 1-1/2" bolts. Very beefy.
What I can not figure out is that these footings/pads look very different than the Solar Canopy mounts of Tejon Ranch (3 Rear, 5 Front) and Hawthorn (Originally 2 Rear, 3 Front).
So that is what drives my curiosity about a new open cantilevered design.

I'll by driving through on Sunday and will take some more pictures.
Hi Damiano, When you take the photos also look for open conduit in the footings/pads for the solar power lines. If they are missing then it may be only a shade structure.
Of course, hopefully, by the time you get there it may be built and then we will all be in awe of your new photos!

When I was there last week, the whole area was cordoned off, so it may be hard to get the access needed, but I'll try. I hope the new chargers are live Sunday, which is often a busy day for folks coming back from Vegas.
