What's with the reCAPTHCA just to get a referral code?

Initially, I didn't have the recaptcha there, and I was displaying owner's name and email. Then one of my beta testers suggested I obfuscate that info, to prevent someone from easily acquiring the whole list of owners and their contact info. So it's meant to prevent someone from easily scraping all codes. You think the recaptcha is overkill?

I don't think there's any reason to display the owner's name or email address.

Also, there are three or four other similar randomized referral code websites, and all they collect and display is the referral code itself. I'm not sure you need to even collect name+email address for each code submitted.

Pretty sure Tesla will give a warning and announcement when free supecharging officially ends, like they did last time. I have no doubt this mini-extension is just to give them time to come up with new referral prizes.

Right, I hide that now and instead provide a contact form that someone can use to reach out to the owner, if necessary.

But recaptcha is too much/unnecessary?

Why do you need it at all? If you're only displaying a referral code, what purpose does making people prove they're not a robot with an overly complex reCAPTCHA have?

There are already 4000 referral codes in this thread alone if someone is looking for one. Google "Tesla referral code" and you get endless more.

I'm with Hank on this. As much as I am a privacy advocate, someone who wants a list of codes can scrape not only this thread but all the profile pages at TMC for codes.

I like the reCAPTCHA for emailing referrers though. You really don't want to enable bot email spamming.

It is once the secret level is unlocked (usually takes a few weeks after your 5th referral takes delivery).

If someone uses a code from this new website which has already been used 5 times then they will not get free supercharging. How will they know?

If they can’t use it, it’ll say so when you click on the link. The only time that someone’s code can’t be used is the few weeks between the 5th referral and before secret level is opened by Tesla Referral Team (manual process from what I hear). After that you can start referring people and they’ll receive free supercharging and you can work towards the 2020 roadster.
