The next big milestone for FSD is 11. It is a significant upgrade and fundamental changes to several parts of the FSD stack including totally new way to train the perception NN.

From AI day and Lex Fridman interview we have a good sense of what might be included.

- Object permanence both temporal and spatial
- Moving from “bag of points” to objects in NN
- Creating a 3D vector representation of the environment all in NN
- Planner optimization using NN / Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS)
- Change from processed images to “photon count” / raw image
- Change from single image perception to surround video
- Merging of city, highway and parking lot stacks a.k.a. Single Stack

Lex Fridman Interview of Elon. Starting with FSD related topics.

Here is a detailed explanation of Beta 11 in "layman's language" by James Douma, interview done after Lex Podcast.

Here is the AI Day explanation by in 4 parts.

Here is a useful blog post asking a few questions to Tesla about AI day. The useful part comes in comparison of Tesla's methods with Waymo and others (detailed papers linked).

I drove my 2016 Model S with FSD 11.4.4 with Ultra Sonic Sensors and Radar and had little to no cancellations when driving in rain. It also never reduced the speed because it had Radar and Ultra Sonic Sensors.
Your 2016 hasn't been using radar for a long time, so that wasn't helping. and the ultrasonic sensors aren't useful at freeway speeds. Even on it FSDb is using only the cameras.

My guess is that the rain that you were driving your 2023 in was heavier. (From my experience it has to be really heavy rain for FSDb to slow down.)

Can’t wait till we get FSD based on 2023.32.x because then some of us get this!

Yaaaaaaaay!!!!
It should probably be coming soon, at least to 2021+ Model Xs, as 2023.32.7, and newer, resolve a recall that they released today. (Failing to detect/report low brake fluid levels.) The recall notice includes this:

For vehicles operating FSD Beta software releases, the above remedy will be included in an upcoming regularly scheduled FSD Beta software release. Similarly, no service visit is necessary and owners of affected vehicles operating FSD Beta software releases only need to install the upcoming regularly scheduled FSD Beta software release, again at no cost to owners.

I have a 2023 Model S LR with HW4 and 11.4.7.2 installed. I traded in a 2016 Model S to purchase the 2023 Model S.

Unfortunately Tesla removed the Ultrasonic Sensors and Radar on new Tesla's. I knew at that time that this was a big mistake but i did not know how bad it would be until I took a 1,200 mile trip to Memphis and back. I started out driving in heavy rain and I got a message that FSD was reducing the speed from 70 mph to 60 mph. Why did it do this, well cameras when they get wet cannot see any better than me. After reducing the speed to 60 mph, FSD realized that it could not see well enough to stay in FSD so it canceled FSD. I switched to Navigate on Auto Pilot, I was able to increase the speed to 70 mph, but due to rain on the cameras, Navigate on Auto Pilot could not see well enough and it cancelled it. I still had cruise control in both FSD and Navigate on Auto Pilot, but both could not see well enough to perform the way they were supposed to.

Elon says Tesla will get to Level 5 but he is smoking dope. Robo Taxi will crash in rain if Radar and Ultra Sonic sensors are not added back. All other Teslas will never get to Level 5 because Tesla's with Tesla Vision cannot drive in rain using FSD or Navigate on Auto Pilot.

Navigate on Auto Pilot used to change lanes when approaching a slower car and then change back. It seems that Tesla removed this feature and it only works when using FSD. This was a stupid decision.

Buying FSD today can only reliably be used when it is not raining. I was able to transfer FSD to my new Model S so this is the reason I bought the new Model S. I would not buy FSD today because Tesla removed Radar and Ultra Sonic Sensors. I still love driving my Model S but FSD sucks when driving in rain.
Welcome to the Tesla Vision crazy train, drinks will be by shortly.

This is not an issue with just HW4. 11.4.7.2 does this now on my HW3 car, the speed reduction in rainy weather.

Sometimes they do, many, (but not all), wild life crossing warning signs that have flashing yellow lights are above them. But sometimes the flashing yellow lights are overhead, sometimes centered, sometimes biased toward one side or the other and of course sometimes not there at all. Sometimes they're flashing yellow arrows. Sometimes they're just flashing yellow, "Hope you have a nice day" signs.
Around here they simply put a flashing yellow light over the sign. The only time they put a flashing yellow over the lane is for traffic control.

I never understood the deer crossing signs, though. The deer always ignore them, cross in other places and get hit!

Rivian vs. Tesla Software - You decide

So, we often talk about how great/terrible Tesla's software/tech is compared to others. We own both Teslas (Plaid and Y) and a Rivian R1T. With he Rivian, we get updates EVERY FOUR WEEKS, like clockwork. With Tesla, you know... Yesterday, I received my R1T update and wanted to share an example of what we get in the Rivian. I'll let you all decide whose software is better.

P.S. My AUTO wipers actually work on the Rivian (rain or shine)... Apologies for the video as I'm reusing one I created for another purpose.

I'm glad you like your Rivian, but I don't understand the sentiment. All cars are different, with different interfaces. Have you seen the new Mercedes EQS "shuttlecraft"? That cockpit is incredibly futuristic. My friend's BMW doesn't have a touchscreen, and instead has this puck you have to move around, and to me it sucks. You enjoy the interface on the Rivian, and you bought one. That's how the free market works. :)

Have you considered the fact that your 2016 Model S didn't know better not to drive that fast? i.e. Tesla did not do a recall on older cars with unsafe software? Just remember you are still responsible on any of the driver assist systems.

What is so good about this change?

I would take big indicators of Brake lights On!
I wouldn't mind larger brake indicators, too. It's interesting because normally one wouldn't care, but given that brake lights are activated when regen hits a certain threshold of braking without you even pressing the pedal, it would be nice to know more easily when that happens.

Also, working wipers. FFS, Tesla.

Latest Tesla video on FSD. It's like they think it's about done...

Saw that video and have been through parts of that route multiple times and a twice so far with 11.4.7.2.
I've never had it perform like that for me. The manic swerve to the right before the right turn at the traffic light did seem familiar. It has executed that neck snapping maneuver several times

You are correct, when Tesla changed the software to use cameras only, they degraded FSDs capability when driving in the rain. Prior to Tesla Vision, my Model S with Radar and Ultra Sonic Sensors did not have issues with FSD cancelling because of rain.

Tesla Vision will never reach level 5 because it cannot reliably drive in rain.
