Superchargers in Australia

It's crazy. Roll on Coffs Harbour South, and it will never be needed again.

Well Taree SC was only a few days away from being completed and opened… and absolutely nothing has progressed there since Elon sacked the SC team. Funny that.. Who knew you might need human beings to deal with contractors, handle inquiries and pay invoices? 🤔

So don’t hold your breath…

Latest update on the BYD Atto 3 & Seals built before the start of this year not working with the V3 and V4 Superchargers, shared on last night's Ludicrous Feed podcast.

tl;dr BYD will fix it - it's a hardware issue, and the fix will take about an hour; a replacement resistor and firmware update. At least for the Seal - no confirmation for the Atto 3.

You would think that at some stage during the testing, before someone would have driven one to a supercharger and tested it haha

The first Atto 3s were delivered from September 2022 (BYD delivers first customer cars in Australia), and Tesla only started opening up the Supercharger network in January 2023 (Select Tesla Superchargers open for all electric cars in Australia), all of which were V2 units.

It wasn't until August 2023 that a bunch more Supercharger sites - including V3 sites - were opened to Non-Tesla EVs, Tesla opens 30 Superchargers to rival electric cars in Australia At which point the Atto 3 had been on the road for a year.

Even the Seal was here in ~November last year - First customer BYD Seals come ashore in Australia
So probably not possible to do the testing in time?

(Though mind you, the Atto 3 has been available in Germany since October 2022, the UK in March 2023.... where some Superchargers have been open since ~June 2022, so yes, you'd think they had tested it on the V3 units in Europe first! Select Superchargers open for others in the EU - electrive.com)

Yeah all makes sense but also the tests and trials would have been much earlier than the delivery dates. I guess during the technical design and evaluation *someone* might of asked.. “so where are we going to tell people to charge these, is there a chance any chargers require anything specific so we can use them etc.”
Who knows, lesson learned I guess:)

V4 Is Coming
We are bringing our latest V4 Superchargers to select Supercharging sites in NSW. V4 Superchargers make charging more convenient with a longer cable, up to 250kW peak rates per vehicle and the ability to receive over-the-air updates.

While we make these upgrades, some sites will be temporarily unavailable. You can still access fast and reliable charging at our near-by Supercharger locations.
Temporary Site Closures*
  • Campbelltown: 4–7 June, 2024
  • Blaxland: 4–24 June, 2024
  • Yass: 11–13 June, 2024
  • Wagga Wagga:18–20 June, 2024
  • Wollongong:18–20 June, 2024
And per a separate email (linked below 👇)
  • Tenterfield: 18 - 24 June 2024

That covers all of the NSW Govt funded Superchargers installed to date.

would argue that the more congested city sites (eg Broadway and Macquarie Park) would also benefit quite a bit from an upgrade to V3/V4
Very different upgrade.

This is just replacing the dispensing unit or stall (V3 to V4).. the wiring in the ground/ in conduits remains as does the main power units (the white boxes which are also V3, which I suspect are the most expensive part).

To upgrade the earlier V2 sites you are basically ripping everything out and starting from close to scratch.

Even in the US I'm not aware of anywhere Tesla has done this, they have added V3s alongside V3s and sometimes denote the difference with 150/250kW signs on top.

The V4 power units are expected to be up to 1000V to support 800+V vehicles, but afaik have yet to be seen publicly.

A better upgrade at Macquarie in particular (less so Broadway as it always has some and has less space) would be a bank of 10+ wall chargers (charged at say 30c/ kWh) for those who might be watching a movie or spending more than 20min shopping.
