Tesla Model 3 in Australia

While I am as anxious as anyone on this thread about getting my Model 3 asap, I cannot stop thinking that our fretting about all sorts of aspects of the delivery must be the ultimate example of a "first world problem".

I am conscious of some people in this world not knowing when exactly they will get their next meal. I can't really say that I am worse off than any of them.

Yeah I feel you.

I actually don't know what i'll do with myself once I get the car.
I know I won't be on my phone nearly as much. I will also be using the phone more productively whenever I am on it.
The last time I was so excited about a product was when I was a kid and I got my first *decent* computer (486 DX2-66 for those interested). I can honestly say I have never been this excited for a product in my adult life.
A small part of me doesn't want this to end so kinda doesn't mind the wait, but a massive part of me just wants to get that damn car already!!! :)

You'll be driving and charging and driving and talking EVs and driving.....

Incorrect. The entire purpose of the reservation deposits was to generate cash for Tesla. The idea of the virtual queue was to motivate people to provide the cash, but the deposits themselves were all about cashflow.

I’m an early reservation holder. (First of April, 2016.) I’m frustrated that I don’t know when I’ll have my car, especially since it’s likely I’ll be without any car from the 10th of September. Tesla could be doing a lot more to keep us informed. And yes, it’s frustrating - especially in the absence of any other communication - to see “later” orders coming in first. Ultimately, it comes down to communication, and I do mark Tesla harshly on that front.
Yeah, im a 01/04 reservation of P3D+ in Sydney and got no hidden VINs or phone calls. It is very frustrating to see later reservations get progress while we get no updates whatsoever. Definitely comes down to the poor communication.

It is the communication that is appalling, like so many others I was told August delivery and have since heard nothing. As with many I am an early reservation holder and ordered in the first hour, the thing is people plan based on the timings. I have sold my car as I had too to be able to finance the purchase. I leave the country in mid September for a good length of time and would not have ordered at all if I had been told a September delivery was likely. I haven’t harassed Tesla as I understand that they are under the pump but it doesn’t’t stop me being extremely disappointed in the was this whole process has been handled, just a tiny bit more information of what is going on would be nice, I mean we don’t even have official word from Tesla that customer deliveries have even started and all of my delivery estimate information is coming from a spreadsheet that enthusiasts have started (thanks by the way :)

So according to my records I know of 10 Tassie Model 3 orders. Would really like to keep in touch with as many as possible for a meet and greet day. Don't want to out names publicly but initials of the people I know are: HS, GV, DC, ZR, AL, RB, SS, I?, NW, DP. If you are in Tassie with your car on the way and want to be on my list but aren't, please speak up :)

Or if you think one of those initials refers to you but haven't actually placed an order and I've messed it up, please say so :)

Meet and greet sounds like a great Idea

Hi Veda

Just a small thing, but when I just checked the Port Botany arrival website, it has the ANL Warrnambool listed as arriving on 6th September in Sydney. If I read your table correctly, your latest update indicated 8th September arrival for Sydney.

A 48-hour gain for all us poor souls with post 488XXX/pre499XXX VINs - yeah!

Thanks. It was the 6th, and ANL schedule slipped to the 8th a week ago. It stayed at Long Beach longer.
I get an up to the minute feed from ANL, so it can change a bit as they plan the voyages.

I’ll keep an eye on it as it gets closer. They will converge at some point.

And when you see a car on the spreadsheet that is exactly like yours and is also being financed and is a later reservation holder and later order date that has a VIN and delivery date.....FUMING!!!!!

I find it interesting that Tesla emailed me this:

Yet, there are so many people who are getting their cars delivered without reservations or later reservations. I even put my order in 31st May (literally, 15-20 mins after receiving the SMS). Yet here we are, I haven't had any calls from delivery specialist. It's sad to see Tesla breaking their promise to the last people that they should be breaking it with. We trusted them and their mission to the point of queuing up early and putting down money to be placedin a digital queue. 3+ years later, to then ignore that queue is frustrating.

So far the only people that mentioned delivery with no reservation (as far as I can tell) are people that will be getting the car delivered and all dates were late September.

I do feel like they held their promise that the earlier the reservation, the higher in the queue you are as far as delivery goes. On the Facebook reservation spreadsheet (over 200 people), those with march 2016 reservation were the first ones to get a call.

This. However, watch who you talk to - there are, I've found, a lot of people who don't want to hear about how fast/cheap/cool your new car is. It's amazing how polarising EV's are, and there are still a lot of Murdoch-reading petrol head bogans out there. Time is on our side, of course.

Of course the cash flow helped, but they were called 'reservations' not donations, or bonds, or stocks, or anything else. The money helped them and to be perfectly honest had I known back then what I now know (that the reservation means nothing when it comes to the order in deliverying cars) I still would have given them two reservations (yes, I have two) because I believe in the company and I know they will use that money to build the business. But that doesn't excuse them for backtracking on their word.

I think the reservations were more meaningful for the USA. They likely did work through the reservation order back then. Here in Oz, or the UK etc it was a moot point. 100’s of thousands of cars had already been delivered and we are also such a tiny market so they don’t care about us. We worked this out years ago when they announced that we’d be the last in the world to get cars. This and the fact they’d be at such production volume that they could smash out all the Aussie orders in a week if they wanted to. So who cares about a reservation order if you can meet the when, demand in one week. They are shipping a few hundred cars here and reservation and non-reservation holders will be in the mix, but then a couple of weeks later everyone will have a car so Tesla could give two S$#ts who reserved when. The only constraint on Aussie cars is the number, or lack of, staff they have here who can physically deliver the cars. That’s why, IMHO, they are spreading deliveries out over a few months.

And of course we’re now at that predicted moment where some other manufacturers are catching up. Even down here in the arse end of the world we do now have viable alternatives either here or almost here such as the long Range Leaf and the Kona. THe model 3 requires 3 stops to get Melbourne to Canberra, the Kona - one stop (albeit with some careful driving for the second leg).

Don;t get me wrong I thinkwe’re in a reasonable place given we’re such a small market and don’t get a lot of love for all the manufacturers.

My advice (worth 2cents and round down): don’t get sucked in again with Model Y or “truck” reservations. Buy an S, or X, second hand so it’s cheaper, or a 3 in a couple of months once wait times are down to a few weeks and you can buy it and book a delivery date straight away.

Plenty of people with hidden VIN still waiting. I got a 488XXX VIN early on and it hasn’t changed. I’m starting to think bulk of the P- cars aren’t on the first ships and our later numbered VIN’s will turn out to be our real ones.

I tend to agree with this. I had a hidden 489XXX Vin (for a P-) which has now disappeared and not re-emerged. Originally told I would get a call last week which did not eventuate.

You've got me there! (DC) - I'd be interested to know how many of us have received calls, VINs, etc.? I had a look at Random's spreadsheet yesterday, but unfortunately there wasn't a state by state breakdown.

Oh - I haven't received a call, etc. yet. Have got my fingers crossed that my car is on the Kota or the Brotonne...

So for those of us in Canberra / Perth etc worried about how the vehicles are loaded onto a transport truck unprotected etc. Turns out we may not actually even have a choice in refusing the vehicle. This is from the Tesla order / delivery terms, and was reconfirmed on the phone.

"If, on your behalf, we are coordinating the shipping of the Vehicle to you via a third party common carrier, you agree that delivery of the Vehicle, including the transfer of title and risk of loss to you, will occur at the time your Vehicle is loaded onto the common carrier’s transport (i.e., FOB shipping point). The carrier will insure your Vehicle while in transit and you will be the beneficiary of any claims for damage to the vehicle or losses occurring while the vehicle is in the possession of a common carrier."

So basically rather than claiming delivery damage from Tesla, we would need to seek recompense from the delivery company. By the time you receive the car it's already registered, in your name, and the delivery guy is just there to drop it off.

They don't really get Australia consumer law here do they...?
