Earlier in this diverse and 350+ page topic someone mentioned we might not need to attach an etag for tolls but I can’t find anything on the RTA or etoll websites for any exemptions etc of any type. Anyone found anything definitive?

I bought a vedaprime accessory today. Arrives next week. I’ll share when it arrives.

It is not a pair of binoculars, camera or a sniffer dog.

That’s ok, you can borrow my DSLR and telephoto lens (100-400mm.) Anything for the cause. ;)

FAQ is as close as I get. Under “using a tag”, it says:

  • If your vehicle has a metallised windscreen (e.g. on some European vehicles), your tag may have difficulty communicating with a toll point. Please read your vehicle's handbook or contact your vehicle's manufacturer to find out where you should position your tag on the windscreen. If you still experience problems using your tag with a metallised windscreen, please contact us.
I’d say that the expectation is that you’d get a tag, and only get an exemption if you can’t get it working, rather than having an assumption of failure. It’s likely that they’d have a list of affected vehicles, but I don’t see them just acquiescing on a new model.

The only thing I can find close to this is the linkt go app: Toll road app - LinktGO where you can use an app instead of a physical tag. They do charge 0.95c "service fee" for each transaction however. With toll roads as expensive as they are i'd rather the tag instead of give them anymore of my money.

I got a call from a delivery specialist on Thursday and they followed up with an email later. The email contained a link to this private video:

I'm not sure if this vid has been posted before? Anyway, it seems pretty comprehensive. You can download the manual ahead of time and have a quick read so you know where all the key features are. That and this video should be more than enough, it's not like the delivery specialist will tell you anything more.
Thanks for posting this. I'm guessing lots of experienced folk on here might laugh but I'm actually quite nervous about getting used to the Model 3 despite a lot of reading of the manual. This was very helpful and reassuring.

Hehe my favourite secret is coming out.

Here’s the trick: basically you just tell customer service your windscreen is “metallised” (they do have a basic list for troubleshooting purposes, but obv they don’t keep track of all of them). No actual proof needed.

This puts your number plate/rego on a list of video matching fee exempt number plates. You still get charged the toll but you don’t need a tag. I have 5 cars on my accounts this way. It’s pretty great.

All tolling providers in Australia do this. They don’t advertise this. This is from Linkt, which operates in Sydney/Brisbane/Melbourne.

Just had a look at the video, haven’t seen it before. Great help Jas.S60, thanks. I’ve been feeling a bit frazzled as this will be our first EV - It’s given us confidence I’ll be OK with the change to EV.

Hi MandySimpson, I’m with you on this one. Like you, this video helped.

Don't be worried - it's really easy. No handbrake, no gears, no noise. Just put it in D, drive it like an automatic and enjoy. Plug in at night and it's ready to go the next morning.

And ask questions here, there are lots of knowledgeable people willing to help (whether they have experience or not :)

On the Model S there is a small gap in the metallic layer just to the left of the centre mirror mount. I had to replace my toll pass before it worked, but the new one has been there for 3.5 years and works perfectly. I imagine the Model 3 will be the same.

Haha, I'm hope Tesla is better at making cars than videos. But just what I needed as it's the delivery speech I won't get when mine rolls off the back of a truck and into my driveway. Thank you for posting Jas.S60!

Now I know I'm going to flick the right/drive stalk accidentally many times since my other cars have all had their indicators on the right. That's going to throw me for ages. From what I gather that means I'm going to accidentally throw the car into autopilot every time I go to indicate right on the wrong stalk. Is that right? And I'm going to throw the car into reverse when I'm trying to indicate left. Anyone knows what that will do when I'm driving 100kms down the highway? :)

From a UI perspective it would make more sense to click down for reverse than up, but another thing I'll just get used to over time.

The company cars that I drive for work are korean/japanese and have the indicators on the right, my dad's BMW that I drive maybe once or twice a week has the indicator on the left. You get used to it pretty quick. Every now and then I have a mind blank and I'm like "wait.. which side do I use?" But it's very rare now. I imagine if this is your only car you will get used to it within a week.

From what I've heard the stalks are damped very differently so you shouldn't mix them up.

Nothing. Or at least as I understand it the car ignores attempts to change gears at speeds above ~5kph.

So it'll be more of an issue when stopped at an intersection. Especially if there's another car right behind you. :D

You would have to ignore the 15” display showing the reverse camera while nailing the the pedal to the floor to beat the Aventador next to you for this to be an issue. Could happen but unlikely :)
