The next big milestone for FSD is 11. It is a significant upgrade and fundamental changes to several parts of the FSD stack including totally new way to train the perception NN.

From AI day and Lex Fridman interview we have a good sense of what might be included.

- Object permanence both temporal and spatial
- Moving from “bag of points” to objects in NN
- Creating a 3D vector representation of the environment all in NN
- Planner optimization using NN / Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS)
- Change from processed images to “photon count” / raw image
- Change from single image perception to surround video
- Merging of city, highway and parking lot stacks a.k.a. Single Stack

Lex Fridman Interview of Elon. Starting with FSD related topics.

Here is a detailed explanation of Beta 11 in "layman's language" by James Douma, interview done after Lex Podcast.

Here is the AI Day explanation by in 4 parts.

Here is a useful blog post asking a few questions to Tesla about AI day. The useful part comes in comparison of Tesla's methods with Waymo and others (detailed papers linked).

First impressions of v11.4.4 after a few days
Aside from my concerns with the P-pillar camera 4.4 has more improvements than regressions so far

Good
  • Large roundabout. For the first time FSD didn't stop but moved thru the roundabout. Small roundabouts have been fine for awhile.
  • No longer stops 10-20' in front of some Stop signs. All around better experience since FSD is not affecting cars behind me as much.
  • Improved UPL's but still lots of problems where I either disengage or use the accelerator
  • Smoother braking approaching intersections. Only a couple of "jerky" stops.
  • Highway merging- many are better but not all, using blinkers most of time.
  • Feels like FSD is moving over sooner after passing a vehicle with another vehicle coming up from behind
Bad
  • Still too much hesitancy when starting to go. The majority of my interventions are using the accelerator pedal. Sometimes it feels like FSD is going to stop in the middle of going.
  • Highway merging- still awful when merging into slow rush hour traffic. Ran out of merge lane today so disengaged to move over.
  • Pulling out in front of traffic. IMO B-pillar related since they are almost always at obstructed intersections.
  • Irrelevant blinkers and/or blinkers not going on soon enough
  • Still phantom braking usually caused by incorrectly responding to other vehicles.

I currently don't have FSD and my 3 is on 2023.12.9. If I stay on this and purchase FSD, am I on too new of a SW version to get FSDb anytime soon? Or put another way, what is the highest current SW version that would still allow me to get FSDb?

I know sometimes you have to be several revisions behind to have any chance of getting FSDb but it seems that gap might be narrowing.

23.12.9.1 would be the highest.

I just got 11.4.4 along with like 2,000 other cars on TeslaFi... Hoping for some improvements to the "Phantom Lane Changes" into turning lanes on 2-lane highways when the route is clearly straight ahead. I'd be ecstatic if the overall experience is similar to what I was getting from 11.3.6 (the best update for my car so far). I do have to say that I'm really happy by the frequency of updates over the past few months. It took FOREVER to get v11, but now it seems like I'm getting updates every month or so, which I do like.

It’ll be magical

Testing 11.4.4 while running errands. I didn't see any improvements.

Here is an example of how clumsy it is. Below is a four-way intersection with ONLY the left/right intersecting streets having stop signs.
Zero cars around. I'm headed in the direction as shown in the picture and turning left in this intersection. It stops partway into the intersection today. Usually, it is just absurdly slow making that left turn even with no cars around and the steering wheel is erratically rotating back and forth as it makes the left turn.
There is *complete* visibility in all directions when you are up near the cross walk.

11.4.4 first impressions:
  • Attempted a new twist on an old trick. Moved into a left turn lane in mid-block when should continue straight. The new twist was it tried to slip into the turn lane as part of a lane change from the center lane to left lane. It just kept going into the turn lane so there was no telltale jerk. I took control when the car was about half way into the turn lane though it felt like it already was correcting itself. Sneaky! This was the only disengagement other than the mini-roundabout in my neighborhood that FSDb has never been better than 10% success. There were no other interventions on the 47 mile drive.
  • Definitely more assertive with lane changes. Had a couple that bordered on superhuman.
  • Though the situations were very limited, the car seemed to do better coexisting with other traffic on narrow residential roads. At one point it was between two parked cars with an approaching vehicle ahead. Ego shot the rapidly closing gap between the approaching car and the parked car on the right. Very impressive.
  • Handled heavy two-lanes of interstate traffic with a lot of slower trucks in the right lane with no problem. Perhaps luck, but it had no issue getting on the interstate. Lane changes were performed nicely. 11.4.2 gave me little problems with this, though, so I cannot say how much of this is an improvement.
  • Drove through some rural two-lane highway construction that had traffic diversions with cones. I did have a lead vehicle through the construction, but it drove it like a pro.
  • There was one strange lane change where ego was in a left hand straight through lane and switched to the right hand straight lane just as it approached a red light. Then after clearing the intersection, it switched back to the left lane just in time for the two lanes to merge into one. No harm done, but two lane changes for no reason. So much for using map data...
All in all, I was happy with the first drive with this version.

I got 11.4.4 on the first day, mainly because I promised only to say good things about it . So far, it's been fairly impressive compared to 14.3. That was my worst build in a while. I live in North County, San Diego, so that could be why it does as well as it does, but today for some strange reason, I had about 5 minutes of horrendous results. Driving along Poinsettia, a lovely wide road, the car said it was stopping for a traffic light (it was green), followed by trying to exit on a small side road at 55 when the map showed a straight path. I took control before a possible disaster, and the car continued to drive poorly. I drive this route almost every day, and it's been flawless. I have no idea what caused today's results, but I'll try and test it again soon.
